I had a friend whose cat lived to be like 26 or something. I wouldn't want to pet it (he did clearly adore the creature) it looked mangy, on its last legs, and (this was a rich family) I believe I saw a med port attached to one of its legs, in between patches where the fur rubbed off....
It didn't look like a HAPPY cat though. I will admit that I dearly, dearly wanted to put it out of its misery (although it was not my cat, so I just "admired" it from a distance). LOL.
Pets reach a point of diminishing returns. I am entirely certain that cat had the BEST of medical care, it was when I was in HS and living in Potomac Maryland.... I am afraid I rejected both the advances of the cat, and my friend. Who also... well, you know those kids that are born old? Like, come to HS in a three piece suit? I'm afraid the cat and my brief date at the 4 seasons hotel (man, their high tea is excellent) were both, ultimately, rejected with extreme prejudice. LOL.
