I'm not sure what the exact rules are Phistraveler sir, what I can tell you is the cops aren't enforcing the anti-smoking laws in places like central park. They only respond if someone complains.... And the great Ron Bennington has a way around that. If someone gets on your case, just tell them you aren't smoking (or vaping). It's your word against their's, and you told them you weren't so... :)

What you vape in your hotel room stays in your hotel room (wink).
There is an indoor smoking ban and I believe you have to be 25ft away from a business's door to "smoke". Walking down many of the avenues where businesses are next to each other, you are always within 25ft of someone's door. In 2006, a coworker of mine (goth-looking chick) went to the city one day and she told me how a cop on eighth (maybe it was ninth) avenue yelled at her for smoking while walking down the avenue because she was within the "25 feet". She was ...... but the light was green to cross so she walked out to the middle of the crosswalk and smoked in the safe zone and finished her cig. lol.

There are a few on this forum who currently reside in NYC. Hopefully they'll see this and report on the city's current vaping tolerance or lack thereof.

Mr. and I were just there on a mini-break. I wish I had a PV for the hotel room, I have one now though! Have to say I didn't get hassled on the street with the 25' rule and we stayed in Times Square, walked past NYC's finest with cig in hand. Also smoked directly outside the hotel door (3 feet tops) with no issue.

I didn't push the new rules with regards to parks though, I can't see how they can possibly enforce them. As for vaping in bars... I'll leave that to you how far you want to push. There's been a smoking ban in NYC for a long time now so, any smoke-ish looking stuff doesn't go unnoticed.

Phish, I travel a lot here and abroad and have never thought twice about vaping in my hotel rooms. Nor about vaping outside a hotel's entrance. No one's ever said a thing when I do, but I have my brief, polite excuse (and V4L card) ready, just in case.

I never push the vaping limits beyond that since I like to avoid conflict when traveling. But yeah, vaping in hotel rooms is one sweet advantage over cigs, eh? I've worried a little in small rooms with a fire alarm right above me (long time ago, I set one off with a long hot shower in a 20-story hotel), but I haven't heard of this happening with vaping and worry less and less. Well happy travels, man.

If the room was smoked in, it would smell. There may be other evidence such as ashes. The smell of a f*rt would last longer than the smell of any vape. I wouldn't worry, Phish.

I've had co-workers who pushed back against a room cleaning fine for actual smoking and had it removed. Hotel chains also fear a black list from large corporate travel accounts. So, yeah, I wouldn't worry about vaping. It does NOT smell like smoke, and I defy any maid or desk clerk to provide evidence of smoking.

Back in '07 and 0'8 I smoked a pipe, the coppers in NYC asked if I had pot in it, I said no, showed him the bag and walked around NYC, infront of buildings, the park and everything smoking it, not being harrassed by anyone. On LI I use my e cig everywhere and no one says a word.
