Took some Brasso to the buttons today. Turned out nice with very little effort. Looks better than silver IMHO, and a damn sight better than dull silver with dull brass showing through.

Also note the bottom button being a bit uneven. Didn't come that way.

Croak,

How did you manage to do that without getting the Brasso in every little nook and cranny?

Easy, soaked a corner of a microfiber cloth in Brasso, rubbed it in good, then used another section to buff it out. Took about two minutes, spent more time looking for the damn Brasso. :)

Oh, and of course I took the batteries out (and did the battery caps at the same time).

Like I said, I ooze something nasty in my body oils that just plays hell with a lot of metals. Both of my wives used to ..... at me about my wedding rings being nasty, when I would clean them every couple days. Drip tips for both of my Atlantis and both my Nautilus tanks showed brass inside a week. Fire button on my old MVP lasted about two weeks before it was down to the brass.

Well I spent about an hour the other day in Walmart trying to find the Brasso. I wanted it to make the battery caps shinny again.

My Sister has the same problem with whatever her skins oozes. Her finger will turn black with a Gold ring. "Go Figure" That should be almost impossible. Have you ever tried to dissolve gold. I was making a circuit board gold contact plating process for a project at a department of defense site and had to have the Chemical Lab folks dissolve some gold into the plating liquid. Everything I tried on my own failed miserably.

Should have called my sister to help. ;)

I thought the only thing that would dissolve gold was "aqua regia". Don't know the English equivalent but literal translation would be royalty (or king likely) water.

It's a mix of nitric and chloride acid...?

The english equivalent is aqua regia. We just use the straight latin phrase. A mixture of Nitric and HydroChloric Acids.

Pretty sure I got mine in the household cleaner section of an Albertsons in California about 10 years ago.

For cleaning the patina off the battery caps, just use some ketchup, spread it on, let it sit a bit, rinse and dry.

But...if you're like me and find ketchup a gross affront to mankind and don't keep any in the house, salt and vinegar will also do the trick, make a paste out of it, spread it on and work it in a bit, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse off with water, dry, buff, you're done.

Your are correct again now would you like to go for door number two. Once it is dissolved the actual electro plating solution contains a bunch of other stuff including cyanide. Which is why a bunch of Electronics guys had to call the folks down in the Chem Lab to t save our bacon.

"Aqua regia (Latin and Ancient Italian, lit. "royal water"), aqua regis (Latin, lit. "king's water"), or nitro-hydrochloric acid is a highly corrosive mixture of acids, a fuming yellow or red solution. The mixture is formed by freshly mixing concentrated nitric acid and hydrochloric acid,[1] optimally in a volume ratio of 1:3. It was named so because it can dissolve the noble metals, gold and platinum. However, titanium, iridium, ruthenium, tantalum, niobium, hafnium, osmium, rhodium and tungsten are capable of withstanding its corrosive properties."

So Holman's sis must be producing an acid equivalent to that to tint her finger.

Tony,

I don't think my sister actually dissolves Gold (but maybe) I have heard of lots of people that have similar problems with Gold, Siler (of course), Platinum... etc. But I am almost positive the people that have this problem are oxidizing something else in the metals i.e. whatever they use to cut 24 k to 18 k. Now I will have to email my sister and get the full story of what she can and can't wear.

Ketchup - really? learn something everyday.

I did finally find it but I did start out looking for a product called a "Blitz Cloth" and it is just a cloth treated with something (???). We used in the service to polish brass belt buckles and insignias and almost everything the Navy uses on a ship. Ship maintenance: Chip and paint, Swab and scrub and Polish... lots of polishing.

I just checked that link and believe it or not Walmart was cheaper but that would have been my next step if I didn't find it.

Nailz, it is getting to the point that almost everything I want has to come from eBay or at least on-line. Up until a month ago we had two Radio Shacks in this little town but they went bust. now if I need a resistor or a project box I am forced to go on line or drive to Los Vegas. I don't mind that drive but driving around Vegas lost is not a fun experience and I wouldn't even consider it without GPS.

Yeah, I was in the Corps. We "inherited" some of some of that brass fetish from the Navy. :)

Ya-But, You guys ran the brig. Not that I would know anything about that. ;) North Island for boot and North Island as part of a drone squadron the only ship duty I ever saw was as radioman aboard the Admirals fishing boat. That sucker had to be shipshape and blindingly polished or there was He!! to pay.
:offtopic:

Well finally got my magnetic stirrer for my e-juice going. Let me tell you if you ever run into a 4 wire fan you are in for a treat. I spent about four hours before I could find anything that hinted at the pin-out.
