Tony,
That is bizarre, 24k is pure gold it is Sooo soft and subject to wear. Also it is a bear to work with molten 24k gold has an incredible amount of surface tension. When I had to make Gold gaskets from 18 AWG or 12 AWG 24k wire trying to fuse the ends together to form a circular gasket was like a Houdini trick. There must be about 2 degrees between the plastic state and completely molten state. Once the gold goes molten the surface tension INSTANLY pulls the cold into a droplet that is as tall as it is wide. The description of the droplet is another one of my definitions that I don't seem to have the words to describe. Anyway the trick to welding gold is to have the two ends perfectly butted together and roll the dice with you torch and pray it joins one end to the other and not pull back into a puddle on one end or both.
That said I am not a Jeweler of course and I am sure that someone that has done it for years doesn't experience the problems I did. Also I have heard in some places solid gold jewelry is their version of a savings account. Which sounds pretty good until someone makes a withdrawal and takes your finger with it.
PS - I wear a ring that belonged to my great grandfather and I took it into a jeweler to have it cleaned and the diamonds reset. The jeweler notice it was 18k and asked me if it was from Europe because even 18k in not all that common in jewelry here. Also he told me that a lot of gold from pre WWII that came from the Europe was a very high purity but it was the only way to get the family wealth out of Europe.
