I'll HAVE to look into them working my XDM. Thanks for the option.

I used AlumaHyde II for my AR. It goes on much thicker than Cerakote but it came out well. I lightly brushed the final coat to get some texture (no gloss).

Love the setup. I'm drooling right now lol.
shop around, see who does it the cheapest (look at their portfolio first!) you should even be able to find someone local.
Will do. Thanks!

You can send it out to get done. I'd probably take everything out first though.

You would have to unless the finisher knows how to disassemble the mod.

Cerakote will involve media blasting and baking, neither of which you want to expose your screen or electronics to.

If you are cheap, check out Alumnahyde II by Brownells. It comes in spray can form and is very very tough for a rattle can finish.

I've used it for quite a while on firearms and things that typically see harder use than a mod.

There are a few downsides. Being that it is geared towards firearms it does not come in a myriad of pretty colors (Cerakote has damn near everything you can think of).

It has a relatively long cure time, but it does not require baking (though low heat baking speeds up cure time a lot).

It also isn't quite as strong as cerakote, but given the price difference and the fact that you can use it at home easily I like the stuff a lot.

The biggest advantage of Cerakote IMO is not just how durable it is, but how thin it can be applied without sacrificing durability. This makes it valuable for devices with moving components where the additional thickness of a finish might become problematic. This is why Cerakote is popular for firearms.

Thanks but don't drool too much. I live in a commie state so the stock is pinned and the mag is pinned to 15 rds. We have to have all muzzle devices pinned and welded so I went with a 14.5" pencil barrel too. I have a PA red dot on it now but was thinking of moving my Burris MTAC 1-4 from another AR to it.

AlumaHyde II comes in a lot of colors now. It does go on thick (maybe .5-.7mm?) which is why I didn't recommend it. The cure time is at least 2 weeks, even after low heat bake. Once it cures, it's pretty tough but will still chip easier than Cerakote.

It's about $30 shipped for one can ($13 per can + $17 hazardous materials shipping) so Cerakote would be about the same cost.

Cure time if applied correctly in an average climate is only 1 week. If you live in a cold/humid climate then it can be lengthened considerably.

I've cut cure time to 3 days with just a couple of hours at low heat. I know more than a few smiths that bake at moderate heat for 6 to 8 hours and claim it cuts cure time to 1 day, however Brownells own techs advise against this so I have never tried it.

And 30 dollars isn't going to buy you a media blasting rig or a good sprayer and compressor.

I can empathize. I'm from California originally.

It's just a mod.

About 10 yrs ago I bought a 4runner and went to visit my sister. My nephew was about 10 at the time and was out riding his bike. When he came home, he parked it right in front of my brand new truck (less than a week old) and he was in a hurry. The bike fell on the front bumper and left a pretty long and deep scratch. My sister freaked out on my nephew and I told her to chill out, it's just a truck and stuff happens. She was surprised I wasn't ...... but how can I be? It's my nephew. Things can be fixed and/or replaced, people can't. The truck has since been replaced (not because of the scratch) and I still love my nephew :D.

Yea Yea Yea I know  but it still aggravates me that people can appear to be so carecareless when it comes to other people's things. If I'm toying with someone else's gadgets I treat them like they are my own and I ..... well u get the idea. But I guess I can't get mad at ol grandma's poor eyesight/dementia lol. And I should a known not to have a cord any where in the vicinity of her. She has become notorious for sending charging devices soaring to their doom in what a way that reminds me of a car wreck. So fast it happens in slow motion.

Your new finish looks pretty awesome. Coat it, andonize it, wrap it, whatever you're comfortable with. It's gonna look 10 better than it did before you stripped it. I'd consider lettin 'er ride, & just clear coat it to protect from oxidation. :2c::laugh:

Have you checked out the Omerta RDA? It's a tiny atty with super reduced chamber also. Has side or snorkle type airflow. Can't use both at the same time tho.

That looks interesting. I will check into it that too. Thanks!

I have my buddies wallet to shop for new stuff. A nice change from me doing all the spending and pioneering.

Interesting. Unfortunately none in my area

For cerakoting check out OCDmods on facebook. He does outstanding work and you can customize it however you want.

I've sent stuff to OCD Mods (Darren Barwick). Turn around time is about a week (depending how busy he is). Price is a lil bit higher if he has to dissemble your mod- cheaper if you do it yourself. I always opt for him to disassemble cause I know me- I'd have extra parts left over.
