I do not understand why we can't know what things are made of.

As someone battling some rather serious allergenic issues in my vaping journey, I think it's important to know.

If I could like this comment 100 times I would. I'm in business myself. I understand how competition works. However, I also think that for the good of the consumer there needs to be way more transparency.

Edyle,

Do some tanks have ceramic insulators? I made one but it broke when tightening. Probably need some kind composite, right?

ErnieKim

I do not know any tanks or drippers that use ceramic insulators, although there are tanks and drippers that do use ceramic somewhere, for example the rosev2 tank comes with an optional ceramic cup where the coil goes.

Household stuff with heating elements tend to use ceramic type insulators.

To me it relates also to the whole clone debate; if high priced 'authentic' tanks could be depended upon to use safe materials like ceramic for insulator, then you can know that you can try out a cheap clone with plastic insulators and if you like it then go for the authentic made from surgical grade steel and ceramic etc

Yes, since about 1920. It's likely manufacturing costs, time to produce and breakage concerns.
Kim

It's all those, plus depending on the type of ceramic things like needing glazes to prevent absorption otherwise, etc. :) I mean the bottom of the Space Shuttle (R.I.P.) and other things used them as heat shields, but everything has tradeoffs.

So I received my Subtank Mini on Jan 31, 2015 from myvaporstore and had been using it soley with the RBA head and the premade coil that came inside the RBA. My battery is an Istick 30watt, and I vape primarily at 25-30 watts. Unfortunately I hadn't seen any of these threads at the time about the clear insulators also being bad, and had only saw Phil Busardo's video about the original white insulators and how the clear insulators fixed the problem. My Subtank came with a clear insulator (which at the time I thought were the fixed ones), and I am sure you can tell where this is going....

The insulators melted.

My first tankfull of e-liquid on the Mini seemed fine and I was very happy, but upon refilling, I started to notice a very strange and disgusting taste. I thought at first perhaps it was my e-liquid, so I cleaned my tank thoroughly with distilled water, allowed it to dry completely, and refilled with a new e-liquid. The nasty taste persisted, and it was then that I decided to disassemble the RBA and saw that the clear insulator had melted in half and was coming apart, while the other half was fused to the metal base and into the airflow portion of the RBA.

I immediately cleaned the tank again with distilled water, let dry completely, switched to the OCC .5 ohm head and put new e-liquid in, but I could still strongly taste and smell the remnants of the burned insulator within the tank itself, as could my girlfriend and everyone who tried the tank afterwards. I thought maybe it was just my taste buds since I has cleaned out the tank and put in a new coil, so I brought the tank to my local shop and had a few friends try it out. These people were not present when the insulator melted and had no idea of the original issue until after they tasted it, but were still commenting that my vapor tasted and smelled of burnt chemicals despite the wick being fully saturated and primed correctly as I have always done.

No matter what I do, the tank now tastes terrible with whatever e-liquid or coil I put in it!

This is upsetting, because before this happened, the tank was performing perfectly and tasted amazing. I was completely satisfied with my purchase.

Ive contacted Kanger and myvaporstore but have yet to hear back from any of them. I'm hoping they make things right because I love Kanger's products and reccomend them to all my friends.

I'm having to resort to using my Aspire Atlantis (which I haven't used since I got my subtank mini and my girlfriend's subtank nano) while I wait for this issue to be resolved. Thankfully I rewicked the stock Atlantis coil with some japanese cotton so it doesnt mute the flavor as much as the silica wick did, but its still not as vibrant as the subtank's flavor was.

On a side note, my girlfriend's subtank nano has been performing perfectly and tastes great.

This thread is brought to you by Aspire Atlantis:p

we vape a lot of those flavors that are known tank crackers..we vape a LOT of Key Lime, root beer, orange (blood orange) Lemon tart etc ..and no ill effects on Kanger Mega/V2/Sub Tanks...

I figure if it'll dissolve something on/in the tank, I really don't want to be vaping that juice. js.

OP hopefully Kanger will remedy this issue for you and all will be rainbows and unicorns in your vape world soon. :D

Hey mate, how'd you contact Kanger? Try this:

service @ kangertechus. com

I heard back fairly quickly, they'll just want your box info and where you bought it, etc. and then you should have a new one coming in the mail. Definitely sucks not to have the use of the RTA, have you tried rewicking the OCC coils while you wait?

I'm not sure if you've been actually following the thread or just replied to the 1st post of an 8+ page thread, but they've already gotten him the newer brown PEEK insulator and he seems happy. :)

The one thing I'm still curious about is how the new brown PEEK differs from the 1st clear PEEK.

I emailed them at that address on Tuesday at around 0700 and have yet to hear back. I provided my product ID, Authentication number, Store info with order number, receipt of purchase as well as my name and address. Still haven't heard back. If you read my original post a few replies ago, I tried using a fresh .5 ohm OCC head after I thoroughly cleaned the tank and the horrible taste persisted throughout :(

So you did, I misunderstood that! Two things:

1. It hasn't even been 24 hours, you might have to wait a few days to get a response but I hope you get it soon.

2. If the tank isn't letting go of the flavors, I might suggest giving it a soak with a bit of dawn eliquid, and/or swapping out the o-rings as opposed to just distilled water? You can use alcohols on the glass and metal, but it's not good for o-rings.

Y'all will be pleased to know that the Brown replacement insulator is holding up well to my LIGHT use. I don't go anywhere near sub-ohm though so there may still be problems there. IMO the Subtank is worth the hassle though; especially the Mini, it's so airy that you hardly know you're vaping, you just "breathe" in the vapor; I love it.
One suggestion when replacing the replacement instigator,, I mean the insulator:
The replacement is not a perfect fit Suprise, Suprise!! To get it together you will have to start threading the tube back in with the top "block" off the deck. Don't put the block into the groove on the deck until you have the threads started; as shown in the picture. If you don't do this, you will likely strip the threads on the block or the post or both.
Go slow and Good Luck, it's worth the trouble though!

JC,

Wow, you really torched that thing! Is that discoloration that I see in the steel? If so, you got it so hot that it affected the temper of the steel, that takes some significant heat to do that.

Did the discoloration wipe right off of the steel? If not, you tempered the steel, as I said, wow.
If, on the other hand, it wiped right off then it was just off-gassing of some kind from the plastic, which is bad in itself but not as bad.

Seems that heavy duty cleaning and replacing all o-rings and plastic should do the trick; be aware that there's another separate insulator on the bottom-side of the deck where the post goes in. Is it still there?

You shouldn't have to go to all this trouble though, not in your case as bad as this is. The retailer should just replace the whole thing. If this isn't a legitimate warranty problem, what is?

You could also send the picture to your credit card company or however you bought it and let them take care of it. They'll surely give you your money back. If they don't, PM me and I'll be happy to share my contacts at Kanger China and Kanger USA; they did right by me in the end.

I emailed them a few days ago. Apparently they are now making us pay for the new insulators

If that's so, then it's entirely uncool of them. The only time I've seen that come up was when people weren't willing to provide purchase & authenticity information, so if they're requiring people with the bad insulator to purchase them it's really bad form. I get that they don't really come with a warranty, but if you're selling a product that has a substandard component and don't make it right, ugh.

ECFs TOS about posting emails here is annoying me in this instance, so I'm going to send a PM if you're willing to send their reply to my personal account. :)

Edit: erieboyz followed up (thanks dude), and because he's a gentleman he may be too polite of a person to be dealing with anyone in a support role. We'll hopefully hear more from him soon on it.
