It strikes me that, smoking, e-smoking are not the right words to be using to describe what we do is called. It has negative conotations to my mind. Even referring to the hardware as e-cigarettes, e-cigars, e-cigarillos or e-pipes doesn't quite seem appropriate, but does at least describe the shape of them.

vaping is a word I've seen used a bit ... are we happy with that or should we try and come up with something else ? How should it be pronounced vaping as in ape or vaping as in zap ?

So c'mon all you wordsmiths, stick on the thinking caps, lets see what collectively we can come up with.
For those of you that have linguistic skills, how about a word in another language, english has a long history of adopting words from other countries, what have you got to offer ?

You might find it easy to believe that we've been around this bush. It was one of the first topics discussed when this forum went up. Smokey Joe, our main forum man, posed your very question. There never was a resolution, BTW, but it doesn't matter. The term e-smoking took off on its own and there's not much we can do to stop it.

Vaping doesn't sit to well with me either, I do kinda like e-smoking, but it doesn't describe it well enough. That's why I think we should try and be a bit inventive and see if we can't come up with a new word to use. that's also why I suggested that perhaps there may be a suitable word in a language other than english.

Suckers.
We could add a little class to that - lol:

suc·cor (skr)
n.
1. Assistance in time of distress; relief.
2. One that affords assistance or relief.
tr.v. suc·cored, suc·cor·ing, suc·cors
To give assistance to in time of want, difficulty, or distress.

Misting is what I do to my plants periodically.

This is fun, I guess, but there is nothing this forum can do to change the world's term for this: E-smoking. Or the devices: Electronic cigarettes.

And I'm fine with both terms. I'm sure our federal agencies won't care what it's called when they consider the legality of an electronic device delivering nicotine in non-medicinal form. Our best hope? We're using vaporizers, which are legal. It was indeed a mistake to ever call them "cigarettes" and talk of "smoking" them -- but that's history now and we must live with the terms.

that's true Bob, but the term smoking however we intend it still has the conotation of being the traditional sense of the word ... ihalation of the fumes of burnt tobacco. If we can adopt now a more universal use of a word or words that describe what we do that does not immediately conjure up the initial thoughts of "smoking" the greater our chances will be of gaining support when this may or may not come down to the wire. Don't you agree ?

Yes and no. In a perfect world that we control, yes. In the real world .. this forum is e-cigarette-forum. E-cigarettes are used for what? We prefer to think of these as alternatives to cigarettes, which are smoked, so it made sense early on to call this e-smoking. Established as this term is, it cannot be changed easily. Try Googling misting, or e-misting. Now try finding Web information on "e-smoking" or "electronic cigarettes". I just see no purpose beyond entertainment for trying to change this leopard's stripes. I don't see it happening.
