Speaking of people getting hurt and heads rolling a few weeks ago, a team leader was attempting a repair on a truck and got his legs caught in the conveyor this morning at the end of 3rd shift.

Took safety and the fire dept almost an hour to get him out of there. Latest news says they're pretty sure they can save both his legs.

All because management refuses to have any downtime for quality issues.

I woke up yesterday with a sore throat and a cold but it wasn’t bad. I started feeling weak yesterday afternoon at work and came home at 5 and went straight to bed. I didn’t get up until midnight except to throw up twice. I think I must have eaten something bad on top of having the cold.

This morning's update from his wife had a video of him up and walking with help from a walker and a nurse.

She said that after doctors told him that he wasn't going to lose a leg but recovery/walking again was going to be long and difficult, he told the doc's he was going to start walking tomorrow whether they were there or not.

Indeed. I totally phoned in the recovery process after I broke my arm and didn't regain full range of motion for years.

More good news, 255 of my 3+ years "temporary" coworkers got converted to seniority starting tomorrow. I'm glad we were able to protect their jobs before Detroit-Hamtramck folks start flooding over to Flint.

I broke my arm when I was in 3rd grade while roughhousing on the playground. After 12 weeks in a cast I remember physical therapy cutting into my Nintendo time and not wanting to do it.

Hamtramck is going to be shutdown to retool for whatever electric vehicle in a few months, and we're usually the only plant in MI able to accept people. Always at the cost of our temps losing out on any opportunities.

On the one hand, when I was laid off and got picked up in Flint I was "stealing" a temps opportunity. On the other I would certainly be upset if they quickly converted temps and I was left on the street. It's a bad situation when you've been on both sides of it.

The dude who got caught in the conveyor is roughly mid/late 40's. He's certainly a motivated guy, and GM will for sure fight tooth and nail against a comp case. Speeding up recovery and getting back to work ASAP is the best way to make sure you get paid unfortunately.

Well, the hits just keep coming. This time it was the 43 year old son of my only living best friend. He was working with his dad the last several months in his generator repair business. He wasn't out on the second to get picked up for work (he had lost his license decades ago). His dad said it looked like he was sleeping. He had a past history with drugs but they believe he was clean recently. Toxicology report to follow.

It was strange seeing his mom (divorce years ago) who I hadn't seen in at least ten years and a friend of hers that just recently moved back in the area after being gone for over 40 years. They were so old. lol

That is horrible to find your child like that. I hope the toxicology comes back negative.

That was my thought too Hitt. Working with his dad, you'd think he'd have a pretty good idea of what was going on with him. My only concern was the timing, I don't know how much they were working between Xmas and NY which could have created opportunity. His business is generator maintenance and repair and, unless there was some failure issue, I doubt they were working much. I know he had, by far, the best year since he opened his own business.

Wow! I just was into a discussion on School taxes in PA and decided to check what the taxes were on my first home that I had bought after getting out of the service. I had paid $21,000 for it back in the early 70s. When I bought a single (we lived in a 1 bedroom carriage house behind a three bedroom duplex that I rented out, basically paying my mortgage), I rented out both units until 2004 when I sold it to the broker I had managing the property. He paid me $227,000 for it right before the big housing crash. I just checked it on Zillow and now 15 years later, it's estimated to be worth $222,000.

I'm sure he's doing okay on the rentals but that's a lot of time for the property to get close to what it was worth back before the crash.

Oh, I forgot to mention, it's 11:30 at night on January 11th. No heat on in the house, no fireplace going and it's 70.5 degrees in the house. 66 outside. Unfortunately, by next Sunday it's supposed to be a high of 32 and a low of 18 but that will be 2/3s of the way thru January.

I think Mother Nature has forgotten it is winter, we are looking at record highs next week for January. This is what it should be late March, not middle January.

Darn Burnie, that's way too high. After I posted, the temp actually climbed a couple tenths and sitting here after the night it's still 69.8. Is it also humid like Florida gets in the summer? I wouldn't mind your temps for a week or two in the dead of winter just for a break but I would prefer to stay home if we could keep what's happening this weekend for a couple weeks in January or February.

We’ve been having weird weather too. We had like three weeks of temps as high as 60 and one snow for the year until yesterday. We got a couple inches yesterday but it’s supposed to be 50 again by Monday. That’s my kind of winter.

It's looking like all the ice we got here is going to be melted off by tomorrow morning. I'm not too upset by that.

Kitchen remodel starts Monday. They're moving the kitchen across the house into the dining room and tearing out a majority of the walls. We'll end up with an open concept kitchen/living room and close off the staircase into the dining room where the kitchen is currently. Therefore we have a week to move 70% of our household possessions from one side to the other/basement.

They're quoting 8-12 weeks to finish up. I'm hoping it's no where near that. They quoted our bathroom as 4-6 weeks and it was 2 weeks and one day start to finish. People don't like off season construction, so they encourage it both to keep their guys working and there's additional manpower available to complete work more quickly.

Good luck with the early finish on the remodel waho. A guy I deal with through work had a big remodel done and it took months longer than estimated. I hope yours goes better.

Oh Waho, what a project and what a process. I've battled that thought a lot myself. My kitchen is small with a DR right next to it. I've pondered the thought of having walls blown out and making a large open kitchen into open to the LR. It's the time to do it other than the long inconvenience and cost.

I was somewhat discouraged when the builders were at my Chiro's house most of the summer doing something similar. When the gf got inspired with her house makeover, I dropped my thought and am now considering just having the kitchen done when and if I decide to spend the money.
