I'm very strongly considering buying one of these to upgrade from my old wore out 50w istick. This would be my first device with removable batteries so I'll also need to purchase batteries and a charger. I'd like to purchase everything from the same vendor if possible. I was looking at vapenw, any other places you guys recommend that stock good batteries, a charger and the rx200?

Just came today, been vaping on it all day. Here are my thoughts.

Pros:

Packing materials were well-designed and feel worth keeping (and I did).

Fit and finish is superb. The matte black with subtle gloss black accents is the best finish I've seen in a device at this price point. It almost has the feel of high-end, mil-spec tactical gear.

The industrial design is clean and minimal in all the right places, while still having expressive lines and ergonomics. This is something so many products try to do, but I always have nitpicks; not this time.

Feels great in the hand. Stealthy, and yet has massive battery life.

The fit of all the parts is pretty good. There is an ever-so-slight alignment issue with a seam on one side of the front plate that requires close inspection to see.

The door fit is very good.

No rattle of anything, anywhere.

The flush, screen lens is a nice touch.

The buttons are clicky and firm. No wobble in the fire button when pressed off axis. No mushiness. A satisfying, tactile, binary in/out.

The fire button pressure required is absolutely perfect. It withstands the weight of the device with batteries and full tank, when tilted against the thumb as a balancing point, without firing.

Firing from either grip orientation works great.

The screen is clear, bright and pure white. It comes on instantly without any pomp and circumstance. No branded logo screens, animations or delays.

The menu navigation is dead-simple, though a few secret handshakes must be learned.

Temp up and down without having to go into a submenu (I wish DNAs did this).

Shows each battery's voltage (5 clicks off then press and hold fire and down for about 5 seconds).

Firmware upgradeable. Updating was easy and lightning fast. It even works without batteries installed.

The vape is strong, steady, smooth and no-nonsense. It doesn't seem to "drift" as much as the DNA 200. I haven't needed the resistance lock yet.

The TC pre-heat is strong, but can be curbed / compressed or expanded by adjusting the wattage.

18650s, of course, is huge pro and differentiator and why many of us were drawn to this unit. Especially considering the FDA deeming regulations. With companies gone, sourcing lipo packs that meet electrical and physical factory specs could be frustrating. Especially, with devices that don't have software to customize the device to a new power source (like the DNA 200). So, 18650s are a future-proofed power source.

Cons:

The choice of screen fonts would not have been my choice (quite subjective, but I am a designer, so I'll mention it). The title-case is hard to read. They should have found a font that works all uppercase, for such a small screen. The text gets too crowded. The screen's fonts do not seem well matched for the design of this mod. I'm guessing JayBo didn't get much say in it. It was probably shoehorned quickly into the product from deep within Joyetech's labs. And clearly designed by non-designers.

The menu feels sluggish. If the menu action can't respond until after it's determined the number of clicks, then the menu display shouldn't update either. It ends up feeling wonky and unresponsive.

Each wire type should allow a custom wattage to be remembered, unique to it.

Not enough onscreen info / options for the vape, post vape stats, nor charging status.

Reversing the screen does not reverse the up/down buttons.

No sophisticated control over preheat. It hits a bit hard for my taste, even when lowering the wattage to about 2 watts over where the mean-wattage is likely to be (guessing, as there is no Last Mean-Wattage display customization like on the DNA 200).

No custom TCR profile capability (yet).

Not big cons, but would like to have:

Display customization options. Like, a way to show Last Mean-Wattage for the vape (when in TC).

Individual cell monitoring display options (like the DNA 200 has).

The temp control is not fine-grained enough. It should be in 1 degree increments. I have the same complaint with the DNA 200. I often wish I could hit a sweet spot between the 10 degree detents.

Conclusions, so far:

Love the device. For the price it's a no-brainer. Like all my mods, I have one to use and one as a backup.

For black atomizer and tank owners, it's a must have. They look amazing on it.

Despite the heavier weight, it will be the mod I travel with due to simplicity of use, coil compatibility, battery life, non-flashiness, compatibility with the headlamp I always pack with me, relative ease of finding replacement batteries, and relative low cost should it be stolen, damaged, or confiscated.

I think this mod will be my choice for getting more of, for post-FDA bartering. It's between this and the eVic VTC Mini in black.

Two thumbs up (so far)! :thumb::thumb:

I'm not sure what happened. However I'll recommend some things you can do to make you as safe as possible.
1. Use high quality, married batteries
2. Inspect them to make sure the wraps don't have any tears in them.
3. Be careful inserting them. I mean observe proper polarity (put them in the right way).

That's mainly what you can control on the mod end.

I have a quick question about married batteries. How do we know the batteries from the factory that come in a set are same age? I order from
Orbtronics and hopefully they are legit VTC 5's.

Another question I have is... would it be safe to use a battery of the same exact brand and model that has 8 more charges then the new ones?

Thanks :)

Mrdap I'd still use the external charger it's what I'm doing till my 4 bay charger arrives.

I was wondering about that I always have a set of batteries married to each mod. With it taking 3 batteries I didn't know if it was a bad idea to charge 2 batteries and then charge one battery. Then keep charging the same two and the third separate until I get a 4 bay charger.

By battery "age" we are talking mostly about charge cycles. With in reason, a properly stored (proper storage voltage...which is how they ship) batteries internal resistance wont change

That's fine....as long as they have the same number of charge cycles you are good

I guess you really don't know if they are the exaxt same age. Although there should be a some type of batch number or lot number printed on the wrapper. What you are really trying to do is get batteries with the same capacity, current discharge rate, and internal resistance. They are mass produced so I'm sure if you picked 3 batteries, you will get minute variances, which is ok.

As to whether you can use 2 new batteries with one that has a few charges on it is a tough question (*assuming same models). I would say officially NO, you would be best to start with 3 new batteries (same models of course). If I had no other choice, I would probably give it a try and pull them after a little use and check the voltages of the batteries on a volt meter to make sure they are all discharging at the same pace (again very small differences would be ok- I'm talking about something like 3.59v, 3.58v, 3.59v.) I'm in no way advocating you or anyone else do that. I'm saying I would probably do it if I had no other option. But the best and safest practice is obviously to just start with 3 new batteries and marry them to the mod. That is my official answer!!!

Cheers,
Steve

They have less info than we do mate on Reddit and we don't have much

Is it just me or can anyone read past the first few comments on there .... the lay out is all over the place & does my nut in trying to read it

Narrowing it down a bit more 'apparently' happened at a B&M in Corpus Christi Tx

Think we all expect/hope its user error but would be nice to get a definitive on what really happened
So the mod belonged to me I work at the vape shop where it happened I ordered the mod and was using it with brand new mxjo 3000 mah batteries I showed it to my friend and when he pulled off the battery door it blew up like a flash bang we don't sell it there so I got it to see what the hype was all about I had a aeronaut rda with a .5 build... And all batteries were all charged evenly so don't know how exactly it happened but I'm still trying to investigate what happend

Ok over the weekend I played with USB charging and watching individual cell voltages. USB does work well but slow. Overall the battery voltage drain does seem even. I would check every few hours and all 3 have been at most .7v apart. Now I was using the on board voltage check so take that for what it's worth.

Edit, forgot to mention batt 1 on the display does seem to be lowest. Unsure which one that is.

Was that the picture of his injured hand on reddit?

The batteries were all used for the first time together in the mod?

I know folks don't want to hear this but there's a good possibility the mod is at fault, not the user.

I glanced at a DNA version a while back and tried, unsuccessfully, to remove the battery door. Since I couldn't afford to buy the mod if my clumsy self dropped it, I gave up.

If the door can be a challenge to remove smoothly and instead comes off suddenly, and haphazardly, I could see the metal door potentially being pulled off at an angle and shorting the positive and negative contacts. Maybe. Again, I never actually got the door off of the one I saw firsthand, so I'm not even sure if it's physically possible.
