Worried for the future of e-cigs

I know what you mean. In the UK they are trying to make e-cigs available on prescription only, presumably for long term cigarette smokers (no newbies). They also want to ban flavours other than tobacco. I'm a menthol cig smoker and initially thought this was a little over the top. Until I saw what was available in the USA! Wow! I now totally understand where the UK Government is coming from. The styles of e-cigs available look like something from Star Wars and the flavours are unbelievable. I worry this is to attract younger non-smoking people to vaping? When cigarettes were first marketed, they were made to look exciting and fashionable. Anyone who was cool smoked. Look where that got us. It's happening all over again. I haven't smoked for over three months now and I'd hate for e-cigs to be banned because so many little companies are jumping on the bandwagon. I feel that to have a chance of keeping this wonderful invention that has helped so many get off tobacco, we need to have e-cigs that simply replace real cigarettes. Like you, I'm new and need to post a few times.

I'm from UK too and have seen the ads that some of those rip off companies (VIP) have been putting out, they seem to be portraying vaping as 'glamorous' and as a result are attracting negative media attention, greedy corporations ruin everything in this country. We also have a Labour MEP doing all she can to ban them, they are banned in France so should be banned here is basically what she is saying. I say screw her, she wants us to die of cancer and i for one will fight for my life with everything i have got.

Like someone said above, I think it's the Pharmaceutical companies that are our (the vapers) biggest concern: they are set to loose billions of NRT income, and quickly too. They will be working like hell to find any negative things to say about vaping, and lobbying the politicians, as well as trying hard to involve the media. I don't think I'm being paranoid here.

Some one above mentioned concerns about kids (the gateway thing) and flavours:

Is it possible that kids could get a taste for vaping? Yes it is; but it pure madness to think that one day they'll wake up and think to themselves 'I know what I'll do today; instead of vaping I'll go out and spend 15 times the money on something that doesn't taste nice, kills me, and makes me smell bad.' That just isn't going to happen; they will vape instead. And if it wasn't for vaping those same kids would be the ones to try smoking.

With respect to flavours. I think a ban on these is a bad idea, as when vapers move away from the tobacco flavour they hunt for at the start, they are moving further away from smoking; this is a good thing. Us ex-smokers only like the taste of tobacco I think because of the association. Also if kids are going to try smoking (and some will in a world without vaping) it's much better that there are nice flavours to vape with, as if they ever try a tobacco cigarette they are going to think the thing tastes like crap.

Shoot guys, the FDA can't even keep an eye on the food we eat, not enough funding for enough inspectors. Even if the politicians pass regulation of e-cigs, who is going to enforce it?? Only thing I can see them getting to is the nicotine and if they do that, it will just go black market. I've got more thoughts, but I just woke up and need some vape before I get all my mental ducks in a row to expound further.

WE NEED TO REGULATE THESE RIGHT AWAY TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE!!!!!!! OOH!!! The Children!!!

(...)

Geez. You really want the government to regulate quality of the devices, and whether your juice was made under "Proper sterile conditions"?

This.

"It's not regulated" is a recurring, blatant lie the ANTZ's repeat over and over, in a fear-mongering agenda...

The e-cig IS ALREADY REGULATED! There are countless regulations that apply to e-cig, as a consumer product! When I go to the supermarket, I buy all the stuff I need without worrying that those products are not 'Pharma tested'. There is absolutely no need for that.

What those ANTZ's (minion parrots belonging to groups sponsored mainly by BP) are demanding is that the e-cig should be regulated FURTHER, without any evidence of need for further regulation, in a clear attempt to simply ban the e-cig. I have seen this is Europe: on the last 08th October, the Comission tried to MEDICALIZE the e-cig (It would have been a de-facto ban, because most manufacturers would not be able to pay for the expensive, and un-necessary, required tests). All the while, tobacco would still be available, without the burden of similar tests...

If I wanted tobacco or menthol flavor, I'd just smoke and save myself the hassle. One of the things that's helped keep me away from smoking since I switched is having something, anything that doesn't taste remotely like tobacco. If that's your thing, go for it, but don't screw it up for the rest of us by parroting that "flavors are for children!" malarkey.

+1 here. I personally haven't found a tobacco flavor that I like and if that was all that was available I've no doubt that I would still be smoking.

Sometimes I worry about crossing the street and getting hit by a car also. They will never try to stop vaping. As everything, tax man will stuff both hands in our pockets so we can't even get in to get a bit of change.

Well... yes, 'they' WILL try to stop vaping, alright!!

On the last 08th October, the Comission tried to MEDICALIZE the e-cig (It would have been a de-facto ban, because most manufacturers would not be able to pay for the expensive, and un-necessary, required tests). All the while, tobacco would still be available, without the burden of similar tests...

That Directive was voted against by our ELECTED MEP's. On December, a NEW attack took place: UNELECTED BT and BP lobbies started their plotting and scheming, convincing politicians into including the e-cig in the new Tobacco Products Directive. If unchecked, this new TPD equals a new attempt at a de-facto ban: no refillables, no MOD's, not even 2nd generation devices like the eGo. Hell, not even ALL 1st generation devices would be allowed: only those 'cig-alikes' BT is about to sell (proprietary batteries and atomizers, SEALED/disposable containers...)

Flavours? Only those already used in traditional NRT's, UNLESS... get this... those that 'might appeal to children'... so, BP can keep selling orange Nicorette, but that same flavour could be banned from e-liquid, if 'proven' to be 'appealing to children'...

Here's a random forum entry about Nicorette:

"The origional tastes kinda like cardboard, if memory serves. Not much to it but the
peppery-burn. Good with coffee/etc. Rather neutral, and unsweetened"

So: BP is allowed to put flavours in THEIR products, to make them more appealing to their ADULT costumers.

Vodka producers can make "Peanut Butter and Jelly", "Banana", "Bubble Gum", "Fruit Loops", "Marshmallow", "Gummy", "Glazed Donut", "Cola"... (These are NOT ficticious flavours, they can be seen at Flavored Vodka - Weird Vodka Flavors - Delish), without fear of having little toddlers drinking their product...

We, however, cannot have flavours in our liquids, because they 'might appeal to children'...!

I call this total B.S.

So. they WILL try to ban the e-cig. In Europe, there is CURRENTLY a ban attempt taking place. And this is the true motive:

It took me about 2 weeks to realize that I CANT STAND the taste of tobacco. I thought I did but once I stopped and tried a puff of an analog, I actually said, "I can't believe I used to like this stuff."

As for government regulation, I say short of stalking members of the legislature, we should be letting them know that defining e-cigs as tobacco is not only stupid but inaccurate. Technically we could just get our nicotine from tomatoes. (Not practically, but technically).

I think there are more important things to worry about when it comes to our government. Our government now believes it has the right to summarily murder it's own citizens without due process which has already happened overseas. There is a belief in our laws and constitution that we are human beings with certain rights. When it was written it didn't apply to native americans, blacks, or woman but over time the people demanded it. They are now killing US citizens overseas (not to mention the 'unpeople' who they have been killing in this way by the hundreds) without trial or any proof of wrongdoing with drones and it will come here if we don't complain about it.

Not even mentioning global warming.

these us citizens are known enemy combatants.
they are not my neighbor Fred visiting the pyramids.
you and me are there enemy.they hate us.
they want to kill us.
they have joined forces with groups that have sworn an oath to there god
to wipe us out.
they put themselves into harms way by there own choice.
don't want to get blown up by a drone?
then don't hang around enemy camps plotting against your own country.
there's an old saying"you made your bed,now sleep in it."
i have no remorse for these people.
you shouldn't either.
regards
mike
