Oh my darling dear ones, been reading to catch up and there are entirely too many of you lovely people having really bad problems right now. I don't know how to do all the proper emoticons that I really should be sending to each of you. But {{{{{{HUGE HUGS}}}}}}} for sure.

Congrats and hugs for the good stuff, congrats for being tough and even bigger hugs for the bad stuff, my sweeties.

I am feeling very lucky right now, I have a roof over my head and none of the water pipes have exploded though several are frozen -- I don't really know what I'm doing so I'm just kind of praying. I tried to turn the water on to drip it through the sub-freezing night, but it didn't turn on. So I figured if I left it on without any water coming out that might make things worse. It's been below 30 degrees since yesterday daytime, and going into the teens at night.

My mentally ill son is staying with us (me and mom) right now and doing pretty well. My 86-yr-old mom wants him to do better and behave more responsibly and help us more, gets frustrated and angry with him. She can't really sort out how much slack to give him because of his illness, yet expect him to behave properly in the house -- both things are true. I'm in the middle, trying to keep the peace.

I absolutely agree that there have to be rules, even when folks have mental illness issues, but at the same time I see mom's world getting smaller and smaller, and her getting focused on unrealistic details and getting overly angry about small things, while she cannot handle big things like the fact that she's unable to manage her own bills any longer, and my little teeny income isn't enough to save her from the overdrafts she does.

YEEP. It is a really tough world. My heart goes out to all of us as we try to work through all this STUFF!

Marla, I am sorry things are so difficult, all I can do when these things occur, is have my little rants, tell of my woes, and then, pick myself up, put my big girl panties on and find things that make me happy. This is a great place to blow off whatever ails you, and then go look for something to put your smile back on your face!
WE LOVE WHEN YOU SHARE THE JOY TOO!

Good Night everyone and sweet dreams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the warm hug. And I am turning right back around and giving you a bigger one. You are dealing with two of the hardest issues to cope with; an aging mom who can not manage as she used to, and a mentally ill son. Both are moving targets, when you think it is sorted out, everything moves. I would send you patience and strength. That is a full plate you have.

Re: your pipes. I would get on Google and look up real quick to see how to handle a pipe already frozen. On the local news here in Nashville they keep talking about if it does not burst when it freezes the thawing out is just as likely to be a problem. See if there is something you can do now to prevent a problem when it warms up. There are people and businesses all over the place here with pipe problems, even some of the schools. On the news they were saying how down south they do not build for the deep freezing temps.

Hope you find an easy and quick answer. Let us know.

Frozen pipes are definitely no fun. A couple years ago, we had a really deep freeze, even by Colorado standards. Below zero for days on end, even freezing rain which we never get.

We ended up needing to drive cross country (Denver to Wallington NJ) during a particularly nasty cold snap. It wasn't awfully cold when we left, so we didn't leave any faucets dripping (moving water, even only slightly is less likely to freeze). My FIL, who was checking on the house every day or so forgot to turn on some water when he came by. Well, we had a nasty break. Flooded 75% of the crawlspace and sent water about 15 feet out into the back yard. $40k later, and we're back running, but found another pipe that split last year. Thank God for homeowner's insurance.

Like Shari said, the damage either doesn't happen, or isn't evident until it thaws. Might not be a bad idea to go to the hardware store and get some clamps and sealing tape in case a line split.

We have sheetrock! Lots and lots and lots of sheetrock! Everywhere. And tomorrow they start mudding it all. We also have a mess. Lots and lots of mess. But no more mold. At least I am told that. If it is there anymore, it is now behind all the new sheetrock.

My poor Kitty is so confused. We have had to move her litter box and food and water 3 times this past week. She does not like the triple plastic sheets door to the living room and keeps forgetting where her food and litter box is this hour. I have been directing traffic and showing her where her things are. She can not figure out what is going on but I can tell she does not like it one bit. Wait till they start sanding the plaster.

I'm so happy to hear this, and so excited for your son! And good for him for speaking his mind! It can be so hard for a kid to stand up for themselves, especially against a parent or elder. But right is right. You've obviously taught him well.
Thank You!

Yay for sheetrock! Glad to hear the mold is gone. I read up a little on all you horror going on, how are you holding up? Are things any better with DH?

Good morning friends! Glad to be here, it's really too cold to live out there. Hope all is well with pipes and warmth for our friends here. Milestone for me, purchased a pack of cigarettes this morning (not for me, for my sister) and had absolutely NO desire to rip that pack open. A win!!

and current temp.. -1*. feels like -22*. idiot city snow plows are STILL putting salt on the roads rather than sand, which is better in these temps. pretty much anything below 15* is too cold for the salt to melt the snow and creates more ice. there is farming chemicals that could be used buy they are corrosive and would kill peoples yards/eat the roads.

glad i dont have to go anywhere. having girlfriend get some cheese and sour cream on way home from work so i can make another batch of loaded baked potato soup. i start with making mashed potatoes from scratch, then add alot of butter and milk, then use my mixer to blend and smooth it out some, then add cheese and bacon (cooked on griddle while potatoes are boiling), then heaty on stove the melt the cheese in, then finally mix in some chives (or onions if you want them) and sourcream to top the bowls. mmm. i make enough to feed 25-30 people at a time, and it hardly lasts the house 2 days.

Hi everyone. That soup sounds wonderful

I'm still trying to work on classwork here, making slow progress, but progress none the less. :) The weather roller coaster seems to be spread far and wide, we have one going on here too, 62 two days ago and now 21. Pipes holding so far and I'm staying in keeping to myself, hoping the flu (not mine I'm healthy so far) starts to ease off soon so I can get out of the house for a while. I'm hermiting to stay away from all of the walking germs out there. It does appear though that those of us old folks who had Honk Kong flu many years ago may be immune to this one, so far so good here.

if the temp here went to 50* i would go outside in shorts. and it would be nice and comfortable (i am an odd ball.. i have done the Polar Plunge.. group jumping into a frozen lake in the middle of winter to swim).

girlfriend has bowling league tonight. last week she won $50 in Over Average (in the 2nd of 3 games, who bowled the most pins over their average, winner takes the pot or can roll it over to next week and take a small percent of the wins for being nice, about 5%. Largest pot was 350, with 4 people taking 5% each for rolling over to next week. )

i just remembered i still have a gift card to use for ecig stuff. gotta contact the vendor to see what percent flavoring she uses to make my favorite juice, and which of the 2 she sells is the one i need. im debating to buy largest bottle i can for the gift card, or buy the flavoring and make it myself. also need to buy some more nic base. and bottles. didnt realize how many bottles i would need. bought 10 10ml and 3 30mls. they were all used way faster than i expected. grr.
