Your teens & e-cigarettes

I have 3 boys, and one of them thinks his dad's electronic cigarettes are really cool. They are not yet teens, and I do struggle with this at times. I have moved to calling them inhalers and let him know I use them to keep me from smoking nasty cigarettes. It seems to be working well enough, as he has started losing interest. I have wondered what his teachers think I am really doing at home when he mentions electric cigarettes.

I was also thinking about a Facebook poll? Maybe I should have my 16 year old post it, so his friends participate!

I was pondering that too. I just don't know how verifiable the results would be, considering people can put whatever age they want on there, teens might be more prone to answering in agreement with their friends if the results are shown there while the poll is in progress as opposed to an anonymous paper poll, etc. If you just want a general idea and don't need something that would inherently imply a level of verified validity in method, I'm guessing Facebook would be a good bet.

My 19 yr old, despite all of my attempts to persuade him not to, has been smoking for a couple years now and so has his 20 yr old fiancee.
She quit when they found out they were going to make me a grandfather (wayyyyyyyyyyy to soon 8-o ) and he started not smoking in the house around her at that time too.

Unfortunately now 2 months after having the baby she recently lit one for him and that's all it took to get her back craving them. After about a week and a half of fighting the urge to start back up she has unfortunately.

I just found e-cigs about 3 weeks ago and spent a week researching them before ordering one. He was all excited to try them , which as much as I'd rather they both just quit I'd rather they do this than smoke, but he doesn't really have the patience to try and get used to them. Still got him trying and I was actually just texting her about it before finding this thread and she seems like she is very interested in making the switch but we'll see.

as for the trying to get a survey out for teens.
I, as well as others here, understand why you'd want to do that but unfortunately I'd be careful about how you go about it too because from other people you're going to get the accusations that you are trying to encourage interest in smoking/vaping amongst teens.

Personally I don't think teens will have a lot of intrest in ecig. First of all the start up cost is pretty high second of all they really are kinda a pain with having to charge batts, top off carts, deal with attys not working right. These are an alternative that works for smokers who for a variety of reasons are willing to deal with hassel that comes with the ecig for the benefits it brings.

I must agree with most on this issue. My daughter stayed on my a%$ for years to quit smoking analogs. When I came home with my e-cig it was yea great your still puffing up the nicotine. I did run into a couple of youngsters the other day outside a store, I was vaping my e-cig as the were coming up smoking. They pointed at me and laughed.
I don't think the younger generation will be rushing out for the e-cig until the harsh reality of additive and harmful smoke sinks into thier thick heads.
Remember when we were young/younger?

Using my standard ecig batteries I got hassled a ton for smokes and lights.

Fogging it up with the mod people snicker and ask questions. When I explain the flavors and the fact I went from 40-60 a day to nothing they pick their jaws off the floor.

Most teens are to young looking or broke as hell to support smoking anyways.

I have 4 teens that smoke. As I see it, teens "don't think", because they have not experienced the problems of smoking yet. They are not worried about heart problems from it, most are not coughing up a lung in the morning yet, nor get out of breath climbing a flight of stairs......and most don't even remember being able to smoke everywhere so their limited smoking places is nothing to bother them.

As I see it most of us have quit smoking for mainly health reasons (some money reasons), but really, how many of us would have just quit because it tasted better? None I believe.

E-Cigarettes are just too much "work" for most teens.Teens are into instant gradification, they are not willing to play around and find one that works for them.

With all that being said....I had given all 4 of my teens an e-cigarette....one,just like everything else in her life she lost after a week and had no desire to even look for it.
The second maybe used it once and became unintrested (end of that story). The third wouldonly use it when she ran out of cigarettes and was too lazy to run out and get some....needless to say she no longer uses hers.
Another son was the only one to take to it, prefered it over cigarettes and still does (just got him a mod for his birthday).

Sooooo out of 4 only one was impressed enough to use it, the rest think it is more trouble than it is worth.

I am also sure that most of their friends that came around tried it, I have not seen one say "hey, if you don't want it anymore I will take it", so yeah, not a big turn on for teens in my opnion.

I can say that after a year of using these and showing them to teenagers---they have no interest and want a real cigarette. Sorry chearleaders of Tobbaco Free Kids, but "Kids" do not what an e-cig--they want the real deal from what I have scene in my experiance.

Sun

heres kinda how i see it on i uess call it a timeline
Real cigs ( cool) do the real cigs until you realize you are addicted or out of shape or something like that. so want to quit. and then get e cigs. I think that to kids they want to be cool so they smoke cigs. vaping is for people who want to stop smoking.

^^^^ I dont know if you will be able to understad this. I just took my nighttime meds and I am waaayyy loopy

so after being on this forum for awhile I have come to realize that i might be an exception, I myself am 19, and I only started smokeing about an year and a half ago.

For some reason that i cant recall I stumbled upon e-cigs and they looked pretty damn cool if I must say so myself, I coughed up enough money for my first kit and loved it, went from most of a pack a day to nothing with only a few weekends where I tried to smoke again and realized they taste like S*^T!

But not t long ago I spent a day at my friends dorm and I was showing off my e-cig (both him and the friend I brought were my main smokeing companions when they were home) well they apparently thought it was pretty sweet to cause as of today both of them have started 510 kits in the mail and they should be here sometime late this week or next.

so somehow I managed to turn my little smokers circle into vapors(ers?) now if I can only get my other friend to quit getting those damn al capones and at least smoke real cigars...

I will say though that when my one friend saw it she exclaimed "what your so addicted to nicotine that you do that!" of course later i also had to tell her that no i dont have any analogs with me so no she cant have one, i dont even have a light.

just wanted to throw my 2 cents in seeing as I am still technically one of those "teens"

You are, however, not a minor, and you were already a smoker. I believe the fear was that minors who do not already smoke would begin to vape.

my 17 year old smokes analogs even though I don't approve and when I quit and got the e-cig I let him try it only because he was already smoking analogs... and these seem to be healthier. Needless to say, every time he sees me smoking it, even if he has an analog in his hand, he wants chief on it for a bit.... and he always says he'd rather smoke an e-cig rather than a analog.. as I feel the same way myself. I have noticed some people don't want to try it, but the people who ask to try it,..... they all want one. I just sold my father and his wife on a 510 mega kit and I couldn't be happier. Should I get my 17 yr old a e-cig kit for xmas since he smokes analogs? Some parents buy analogs for their kids... I don't and he is going to smoke them regardless. I would much rather my son smoke a 510 over an analog. Just as I got my Father and his wife to buy a kit.

Absolutely, yes - buy him the e-cig. Anything to get him off the analogs.

I am planning to buy my 22-year old daughter a Vapor King kit for Christmas. She lives in another state but we recently got together and I was surprised to see that she really liked vaping... but she'll never order it on her own.

well i can tell you i am 18 years old, smoked for 3 years and love e cigs.

I do get the odd little pratt saying it looks stupid and all that. but i don't care, i am currently in the process of joining the army (parachute regiment) and everything i do is geared towards me being as healthy as possible for training, so if that means i use something that others think looks stupid i honestly couldn't care less.

just the other day i was vaping on the london underground train, and some 16ish year old who seemed to think he was vinnie jones, but looked more like pete doherty, walks up to me and asked me what it was, i explained, he then walked up saying it looked gay...... the guy was wearing skinny jeans and had long hair and boots and aparently i look gay, fair enough lol. I dunno if i am just more sensible than most teens, but god.... some of us are irritating.
