Thoughts on a couple of extracts from last weekend after approx. seven week PG soak:
Hearth & Home Signature Louisiana Red - PipesandCigars.com
The description on P&G is accurate with the exception that the peppery bite isn't quite there yet. It's a wonderful flavor as y'all know. Full and rich but, not quite full blended together which will probably come with a little more time. The Virginia's sweetness is a little more prevelent now.

Dunhill Flake - PipesandCigars.com
The hay and grassy notes aren't quite there yet. To me it's similar to Dunhill Early Morning but without the little extra ingrediants. It's a good morning vape. Light and sweet-ish. I'm hoping that sharp tangy grassy flavor comes out to play more.

These were three stage filtered and once mixed 70PG/30VG 12%nic at 25% I stuck in the rice cooker for 30 minutes at 100 degs.

Their American Virginia is an excellent choice. So is their Bright Leaf Virginia. The Canadian Virginia is great but somewhat on the mellow side.
just got back and picked up 1/4lb each of American Virginia and Brightleaf Virginia (Sweet). they had two American Virginias, 2012 and 2013. i asked what was the difference, they explained the 2012 is more bold tobacco flavor and more nicotine so it should be obvious which i picked ;-)

i cut some of the tobacco to fill a 1/2 pint size mason jar 3/4 of the way, then i will fill it to just above the tobacco line with PGA. going to let the tobacco dry little a little first as it feels very fresh and a bit moist.. i'm assuming it's better to let the tobacco dry a bit before soaking in PGA to extract the most flavor..

if this turns out well i might go back and buy some of the more "expensive" tobaccos. only paid $9 for all this tobacco, it smells nice..

Good idea to dry the tobacco. I shred mine a bit smaller than yours by rolling it gently in my palm when dry. I discard any powder that might result. You should be OK though the way it is. The VA is a bit stronger than the Bright Leaf.

I have been eying their Perique for a while and might go for it soon.

Buying from leafonly seems to me to be a very good way to get the single varieties, unmodified, and then mix. Is my thinking on the right path?
that's what i plan on doing later on as i get an idea of what each tobacco leaf taste like then mix and match.. they also sell tobacco "scraps" which can include blends of different tobaccos as well. prices are very reasonable..
i'm just glad they're local to me.. only about 20 minutes away, they are in the boondocks. i had no cell reception and my GPS kept going out because there were so many hills and trees.. it's nuts that a 20 min trip could make me feel as if i were in the stone age..

Funny and true. It's great that they're so close to you and I bet their shop smells wonderful!

Sounds like you're taking the steps in order and finding out what they taste like pure. I should've done it that. I went about it by getting some of NET.com's single varietals. As with music you gotta go to the source.

Back when I was still smoking I'd stop in a fancy cigar shop in San Antonio. One day I come out of the "vault" with my measly two cigars. At the counter was a tall dark stranger. Cowboy hat, full black duster coat. Boots. The clerk was handing him boxes of cigars. I sidled up beside him. It was Kinky Freidman.

It looks like you got the 1/4 pounders correct?

so i'm wondering how dry should the tobacco be before soaking in PGA.. should the tobacco be like a crunchy stale texture? because its been two days out on the counter and the tobacco still is soft, kind of like leathery still.

should i go ahead and start extracting or dry it further? i have a food dehydrator that i could probably put it on low temp (130F) to dry it more(faster) if it will result in a better extract?
