Thanks tbev, but I'm not on to mechs yet. Using a stacked 350 zmax v3. It's limited to 1.3 ohms and can hit 24w with stacked batteries. I always thought this 100ft of 32 I got a year ago was kinda dark in color, almost brownish, compared to other shiney coils I see. I think it's an off grade.

I'm thinking of going between 28-30 for my next buy. Since I'm limited to 1.3.

Here's my current vape. Zmax v3 and flash e-vapor clone

Kanthal or Nichrome ?

The Kanthal A1 I get from LightningVapes is as shiny as the mod in your picture.
Inexpensive to boot.

Thanks Jake... I've played with steam engine a bit, but I'm planning on putting an Orchid V2 on my Tesla... it only goes to 15W and I think shuts down with anything under around 1.7 ohms.... and it's dual coil... ugh, which means I'm gonna have to build 3.6 to 4.4 ohm coils....

Now you see why I'm gunna have to use a broom stick? LOL

turns out that 3 lbs of rayon is a very large amount... haha

LOL... YEAH it is!! You could wick every atty in your state... for the next 10 years... and you'd still have to put the leftover in your will so as to not incite riots within the family!

I have kanthal unlabled roll other than 32 from a package deal I got a year ago. It's dark in color almost brown gun barrel color. I always thought I liked Nichrome better when I got some with an atty. but then I have issues with resistance going to 30g. Will need to order some good a1 this weekend so I can has shiney coils. Lol

The Kanthal from Temco is bright and shiny and the also have nichrome.

Temco is my only place for A1 Kanthal! I swear they ship faster than any other ebay merchant I ever ordered from. 100ft. rolls are usually free shipping too and it always gets here super fast when they ship even though its USPS from Cali! :toast:

Ok guys so finally took some pics of my wicking technique. What instigated this is that getting the right density was a headache especially for beginners. I got got the density right a lot of times but it had always one problem. The center of the cool is always the week spot. When you insert a wick it gets compressed. When you take it back and forth, you secure the edges but the middle of the coil will be the weakest point.

I have said before, when using a dripper sometimes I forget to drip or squonk. I would be busy at work and just forget. So i get a dry hit. With ever dry hit, the middle of the wick goes down. Probably because of scorching a little or because it cannot hold more juice as before I dunno but it does. After that point you will get more dry hits one after the other.

So what I did is use 2 pieces of rayon:

The pieces are of random size not too small but smaller than what you would usually use as a full wick.

You roll the edges:

And now you insert from both sides:

It is not easy the first time but gets really simple the more you do it. Once you have 2 tips showing, hold one and with the other hand (might need a tweezer, I don't anymore) pull the other end.

The trick is to pull both at the same time. They will interlock and provide a consistent thickness in the middle. Don't pull too much for it not to choke. But the benefit here is that the two pieces push each other toward the coil and push out the air without leaving gaps at the center of the coil.

Then cut the tails and put liquid.

I have been using this method for a while. Still dry hit lead to more dry hits but now you get around 4 or 5 warning toots since the wick is touching the coil in more places and takes the form of the coil. The pushing of 2 wicks ensures better coverage at the coil from the inside.

I anneal before I wind a coil anyway. It does remove some more of the temper and makes it easier to work with.

awsum,

I do also. Even though Temco claims it is annealed I have notice a significant softening when I torch it. I hate trying to wind a coil when the material is like the leaf spring out of a 3/4 ton pickup truck.

Take two pieces

Aalwani - that's a great idea!

The main benifit I see is that your pulling from both sides if you do it evenly it won't deform your coil because you've got equal pressure from both sides. There could be an issue with getting it too tight though. But that's on the user.

It's all about how you can get it to work for you and get enough density in.

I've never seen a collapse in the middle that wasn't evident at the edge of the coil. Meaning the whole thing is loose from the top of the coil.
