Also emonty, have you tried the 28awg nichrome, I got stuck with it, and then fell in love with it, 8/9 wrap on DID at 1.2 Ohms.

how on earth can you be getting a 1.2 ohm coil with 28awg and 8+ wraps??
3 Wraps on my aga-t wick = 0.9-1 ohm. That wick doesn't look that much thinner than mine.
Just curious...thanks.

Nichrome is much lower res than kanthal for one and second, a 1 ohm coil on my agat with 28 kanthal is 5 wraps at present with a 3mm wick.
Studiovap how do you remove the negative post (not the screw, but the post) on an AGA-T? I briefly tried to remove it with pliers but it didn't want to budge and I didn't wanna force it.

Thanks

I use a ss rod punch and hammer to drift out and remove the post.

Ok, I finally found some small jam bottles for wicking lamps, back to the lab:)

Sorry if this has already been covered, haven't been able to follow the thread in awhile.

I just got some 500 mesh in. There does seem to be a big difference between this and the 400.

I am using a Cobra rba. With the 400 mesh, 60mm wide seemed to be a good fit rolled tight. I just made my first 500 wick today, and 60mm wide doesn't seem thick enough. With rolling the 400 I had to try, with the 500 it was no effort and fit fairly loose in the wick hole.

What do others find to be the best width with 500 for the cobra?

@ BJ - I've browsed 80% of this thread (no mean feat) and haven't seen it covered as to how you are rolling your mesh so tight. I'm damaging my fingers (pun) rolling mesh on my desk or with a dollar bill to get it all to fit in my wick hole.
I really don't roll as tight as some. 80 mm 500 mesh and 100mm 635 mesh for most of my wicks and just roll as tight as I need to fit snug in my wick hole; Just because more and tighter is better capillary action doesn't mean it is necessary, I build a wick that satisfies my necessity for how I vape. More mesh and tighter would just be wasteful. My original quest was to build a wick that I could chain vape without dry hits and I have achieved that and more for me.

BJ,

Thanks for the response, very much appreicated. I saw your post above, and with similar posts, just trying to find what works best without using more then is needed. Have plently of mesh to last awhile, but have seen there is a certain point where more is not needed.

Looking forward to trying the 80mm. I like to have 2 or 3 wicks that I rotate, and inbetween I let clean them with everclear. Then I always have a nice fresh wick when it is time to recoil.

Thanks again.

When you roll them, the tendency is for them to spring open and unroll. How to you cope with that?

Try torching the mesh before you roll it. And to roll a rock hard wick if that is your goal, roll it with your fingers until you can't get it any tighter then roll it between 2 boards. Only roll in one direction. If it unwinds then turn the wick around and roll again.

I wash my mesh with detergent and boil to get all the oils out. I do not torch before rolling and normally only lightly torch for oxidizing under the coil area after rolling. I can't say I have ever had any problem with them springing open and unrolling if is start tight from the start. If you start with a loose roll and then try to tighten it it does tend to spring open.

Ah Ha. Not torching first probably helps prevent it from being so springy.
I just bored out my AGA and put in a solid wick and all i can say is that it's amazing. 1 second hits are *more* than enough.
I think I've found perfection.
I still have a top-coil hotspot almost every time though. I have to fiddle with it for a bit after wrapping the coil to make it happy no matter what wick I use. Not sure what that's about.

The top coil gets too much tension. Try to keep it from stretching when tightening.

Same for me. I give 'em just a light torching (orange glow instead of cherry red) and they seem to roll easier. But that's just my experience.

+1, a quick torch helps take the spring out, but as BJ says start super tight with your roll and it rarely comes unwound. If you are really struggling once you have rolled the wick, wrap a cm or so of the loose flapping edge round a tooth pick and the re roll, and that will hold it all together.
