poland, and the brassy lands of google
That'd be one of the many joys of genny's :)...your kanthal, by virtue of constant heat related expansion and contraction is always moving about...It's a rarity (for me at least) to get a build to work without a tweak here and there for the duration of the coils life...don't sweat it, that's why they invented toothpicks, caps on bic pens, those little plastic swords impaling your olives, etc...

etc.... Oh! You must mean grabbing the kanthal coil with my Miltex #5 non-magnetic mosquito forceps, a favorite tool of mine for ~20years. Non-conductive instruments, sheesh. :D

there is one point that I want to make that has only been touched on.

bj only uses nic liquid, and some VG (I think?) and menthol. Because he does not use flavorings, he might not be having the muted flavor issues some of us are having. His main thing is wicking. I have not had wicking issues really, just flavor and heat issues. This could be vastly different for him because of his juice setup.

just saying. Now emonty is a different story. I still cannot figure out how his flavor is better. He is using 28g which I find to be difficult to work with and also really scares me a bit.

I use 0 nic and almost 100% vg. I do use some flavors, my DIY Opus X booze, Bluemist Guava, VaperGod Artic and a few others. IMO mesh # does not change or mute flavor, all it does is give more or less juice to the coil and since you normally don't use VV it is very hard to explain. If I did not use VV only 1 in 100 coil/mesh wrap would be even close to my sweet spot. Even .1v makes a difference. If you enjoy making coil/mesh setups until you find one that works for you, great. I really hate flavor threads as they are very personal to that person's taste buds. If a wick adds flavor or changes the taste it is doing more than just transporting the juice and adding thru a chemical action something else to the juice and many do. Now harsh hit is something else, and has many reasons but can be condensed in this, too much heat in a small area that is too dry.

On the edge of insanity..
@asdaq/Quigsworth - Thanks for the info! I will try moving my wick a little closer and not fully wrap the last coil all the way around the + post.

LOL....I am slowly finding out that this has become more of a hobby for me because I have yet to get discouraged and enjoy reading everything I can. I am new to RBAs, but I'm liking every minute of it. :)

Thanks again for the help!

So happy with a thread like this one, you learn by experimenting instead of just following a vendor who thinks he knows it all and his admirers are following like sheep...

+1000 on that one Emonty...though It's understandable why vendors tend to follow Occam's razor and provide materials and a methodology with the highest chance of success...Zen wouldn't do all that well if he shipped his devices with no insulators, 100mm 500 wicks and a roll of 28...very few peeps could get them to work...

fully agree, but don't start saying stock has the best result, because it ain't!

So I've been using my ZAG with a 1.5 30 coil on 100mm 500 which is great but the point is, thanks to Turbo I did the piece of beer can mod to tighten up the airy draw...it's been a few days now playing with it I and I have to say, not only am I used to the stock draw now, I'm liking it, vape production is amazing, it's just a matter of getting used to very little draw restriction...so I drilled out my Quigsworth Hybrid air hole (same wick, same coil)...HA!...I'm coming to the conclusion that maybe I was suffocating it...it's not so much the internal volume of the combustion chamber as it is the amount of air it's getting. Now my hybrid has a "Line" like central wick, unlike the ZAG, so I can't really tweak the vape/TH however...I'm seriously considering drilling out my Line cap...

I was not heckling bj or emonty btw. I was just pointing that out. I hope you guys know that :)

Never thought you were heckling, and sincerely feel bad and wish I could help you find your good setup. It is very hard to comment on your results. First you talk about muted flavors, every coil I roll can have muted flavor or harsh flavor, it is totally relevant to watts, (V), and is why I almost always use VV. You comment on emonty's setup and can't believe he has good flavor, the only answer to that is, emonty has different taste buds and throat. No way to say what is good flavor for anyone.:toast:

I found when I finally got to O nic it was much harder to find a sweet spot that would give me TH and flavor. Nic accounts for a lot of the TH sensation so it has to be replaced with something else, menthol and some flavors help but mainly I have gotten good TH from heat, I adjust all my vaping to about .2 volts before harsh burnt juice taste. My vaping is far from muted and even analog smokers cough when they take a hit from whatever I am vaping. The 500 mesh has finally given me a wick that can keep up with my heavy double draw chain vaping at the edge of the temp curve.

Hey Quigs, what is this beer can mod you speak of and is it something Zag specific?

Quigs - after just a few days w/ a ZAG, I too am getting used to the airy vape (it's more like easy Lamaze breathing instead of pulling on an iO6 atty). I assume you've taken the insulator out of the ZAG to use a 100mm wick - correct. I don't use one on my GTUS's, so I'm OK taking mine out.

But I too, like asdaq, am curious - what's the beer can thing?

I've gone from being a flavor ..... to a unflavored/minimal flavor fanatic

nic has loads of tastes, whether its the tasteless glory of wizard ice, the peppery goodness of MFS or the rancid anus of RTS (btw emonty I really need to get some ICE, you europeans have it made !)

VG has tastes, PG has tastes, etc

Sure things become more complicated with a flavored blend, but if mesh did make a difference, us naked types would know it

And I agree with BJ, the steel adds what it adds and thats about it (or lets the juice shine if you prefer, personally I think every wicking material adds something). Difference between maximum flavor and poor flavor is the difference between optimum juice feeding (wicking) and suboptima/even excessivel wicking +/- terrible shorts IMO

Quigs et al. I think there is a syringe/hypodermic mod for those loosey goosey zen caps somewhere around the forums, but don't ask for it in the thread as you'll likely end up with somebody's "good evening" half way up your crack lol
