i have mesh 270,325,400,500 kanthal 28,29,30,32,34 and nichrome 60 28,30,34 awg.
Can someone say me a tested setup for a lot vapor (i don't want throat hit) ?

What mesh wicks better ? which wire is better ? how many wrap ? outside diammeter of wick ? width of wick ?

thanks

Impossible to answer that except in general terms #500 wicks the best, thick tightly rolled with no center hole wicks the best and the larger the heating area the more vaper it produces. Read the thread there are many super vaper producers in it.

Nice... If I did the math correctly it looks like you have 32 possible permutations of mesh and resistance wire alone there. You're quite ready to experiment!

It seems like this may have been covered earlier in the thread by BJ43 or emonty, but is there a good way to roll these dense wicks? So far if I sort of roll it like normal and then keep trying to make it tighter and tighter it becomes very difficult, and I can't get rid of that center tube completely. Am I just a bit wimpy or am I doing it wrong? Both?

that's it, you will have a tiny hole left and your hands will be tired ;)

don't let the mesh fold be the last part where your top coil leaves your wick to the center post...just saying...:glare:

I try to position mine so that the fold/seam is as far from the center post as possible, thinking that might limit the chances of rogue wires contacting the positive connection. Though I can't honestly say that I think that makes total sense; I think in general I've kind of underestimated the impact of the fold/seam up until recently.

Pardon my ignorance in advance, but I'm absolutely stumped in terms of not having a hole in the mesh wick (400 or 500) when I'm through rolling it. I've tried several ways and I still have that lumen. My thumbs and first digits will soon be bloody stumps....lol. I'm trying to make a wick starting with mesh cut to ~100mm X ~40mm Could some kind soul please point me either to the post I must have overlooked that tells how to do this or give me some tips as to how to minimize the center hole?
Thanks very much.....

When we refer to no hole it is really just as tight as you can without a needle or paperclip in the center. I have crimped the inner wraps with a needle nose to even close it more.

I roll mine about a third of the way, then tighten that part up by rolling it back and forth a few times, then roll up the next third and do the same thing, then the last third, then a final tightening. I find it much easier to get a tight wick this way than trying to roll the whole wick and then tightening it up, much easier on the fingers. Mine are not as tight as some, 100mm in a DID with a little room to spare, but it works great and no sore fingers.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the help and tips. Been having a grand old time fiddling around with various mesh and wire combinations. Some work better than others, but overall the flavor from all of them is superior to any other device I've used to date. What a great advance for vaping!!! Wonder what will be next???

Wow! I just found this thread and have reading until by eyes are bleeding. I'm up to page 32 I think now. lol

BJ - Quick question on terminology being used in here. I was reading about your test results you did last month with the wicking test of the oxidize BEFORE rolling and AFTER rolling. Are you talking about oxidizing (heating red hot then quenching) the mesh or tempering (heating red hot no quenching) before rolling.

The reason I ask is because someplace I had read some folks temper their mesh before rolling to take the "memory" out of the mesh so that it stays rolled. Do you do this with your wicks?

Great thread! Big thanks BJ and all for sharing your knowledge.

Hi guys,

I have been playing around with the 500 mesh and got about 9cm rolled tight (no light shining through when looking down the center and held against a lightbulb). However, wicking is really crappy, I can only get about 6 seconds of vapor (device is vertical) before the kanthal dries up and the coil starts to glow. I am using 3/4 wraps of 32awg...

I have gotten 325 to wick a lot better than this, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong here...

I just heated it a few times without quenching. (Tempered)
