poland, and the brassy lands of google
Monty, your vids certainly are helping to sway, but I have years of mesh to use and don't want it made obsolete. :D

Would you say the vapor is thicker and richer? I can see the amount of vape is certainly there, and you said about the flavor, but you still seem able to speak while vaping.

Quick lab experiment. First a 400 60mm wick, rolled tight no center hole and a 20mm piece of mesh folded so it will stand up. I put both in water and the wick you could actually see the water rising to the top in about 5 sec. The 20mm sheet the water just stayed at water level even after 5 minutes. The second pic shows the wet part of the mesh at water level and no appreciable rise. The third pic is to show the 60mm wick is wet to the end. The fourth pic is the 20mm sheet rolled into a loose wick with a center hole, the max rise of capillary action was only about 1/4 in.

Another common statement on ECF, "don't roll your coils too tight on the SS wick or install it too tight in the base hole or it will choke the wicking".
This just didn't make sense to me, you would have to crimp the wick so much that the holes in the mesh were smaller than a molecule of the liquid. In fact it should actually wick better if tighter. I realize cutting into the wick with the coil wire can cause shorts but that is not the point here, just if it reduces wicking. First of all the outer layer of mesh on a wick does very little of the total wicking. So I took a piece of 32g A1 and twisted it on the wick with needle nose until it was tight and cutting into the wick. I did this video in slow motion to see if I could see a reduction in the wicking when the liquid got to the crimp. I saw none. To reduce the capillary action you would have to almost crush the mesh into a solid mass and that is impossible with bare hands.I have always wrapped my coils fairly tight as they expand with heat and all my wicks are tight in there base hole. I have never had a problem with this. Click on pic to see video.

Thanks for the confirmation on quality monty, I meant vapor so thick it interferes with the vocal chords. And now BJ is showing me what I can do with all the mesh I won't want to use once I get some #500.

4 layers of#400 mesh in a funnel makes a good filter for my DIY Opus X booze tobacco extract.:)

It's been almost a year now that I've been eaves dropping on conversations here on ECF...trying at first to get up to speed, then, try an separate the pepper from nat sh.., problem is, you're right, there's so much noise, parroting and mantra...based entirely on some guy on another thread's opinion on something he's never actually done...finally, there comes a time when you just say screw it, I'm doing it, building it, etc..post the victories cause you're proud, more importantly, post the failures to save someone some time...but invariably, you'll see that post where someone asks "can I use this cell phone battery in a mod?"...you nailed it BJ, Willy drove me nuts more than once :p, but I totally get it, there's no shortage of guys with opinions on here, the trick is to find the guys with knowledge.

I have subscribed and I am currently following this thread with interest.

I ordered some #500 today (which seems like it will take a while to hit me) and am wondering what dimensions I should use with the 400?

Also, does the device you are using matter? and I am guessing I will have to wrap less wraps (I use 5 or 4 normally)

thanks for the thread. Very interesting.

The dimensions are the same on both, 400 and 500 use the same wire and their thickness is the same, 500 has smaller holes. You can roll the two the same but the 500 wicks better because of the smaller holes,
and it should work better on all devices and all coils. It wicks better, period.

Yep, just saw a video referred to in several threads for the DID and the guy said a 20mm wick with as big a center hole as possible (Montezuma's revenge).

@bj43

Sir, when you roll your tight wick, do you use a pin or clip? Or rather roll it, using nothing, and attempt to do it so no center hole develops? More, or less ss 500 material, better or worse.

Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk 2

The last few with 500 I rolled without the small paper clip. If you are using 400 I would still use a small paper clip and if it spits to much crimp the top a little. As I said before IMO if you are going to use SS, 500 is the best no matter the device, the juice, or the coil, it is just the best wicking SS to date.
