Weeeellll, after having another moan in a diferent thread (pyrex ss hybrid thread) about still struggling with shorts to the SS mesh, even after trying a wrap or two of coarser mesh on top of the 500 on the newest of my 2 CHIDS, I stripped it down and had at it again and nailed it, with fully *tight* wrapped coils of 29 awg kanthal - I just 'oxidised' the mesh a helluvah lot more than I had been doing -
- I'd tried easing up and only turning it a shade or tow darker/to brownish and that wasn't working, despite advice I'd read to not over-do it to 'black', that apparently being sugested as likely most folk's problem, but was getting nowhere unless I wrapped loose coils, so this time I thought buggrit, and heated the hells out of the mesh, ran it under the tap, and repeated 3 or 4 times - the wick was fully black after this. Wrapped a nice tight 7-ish wrap of the 29 guage, and not a singe short to be seen - beautiful!
However, I'm still not really impressed at the level of wicking - my wicks run dry before I'm done vaping unless I really tilt up the device to above 90 degrees - 'drinking' as I've heard the term (luckily when 'couchvaping' I tend to hold it at pipe smoking angles anyway) - this is with a wick a shade under 2.5mm (fits fairly easily into the hole), no centre hole and totally solid/plenty tight rolled (I have big hands and rock-climber fingers). It has several mm spare above the coils to hold a bit extra juice, the CHID top-plate has been drilled out/bored from below and been given a slight countersink from the top for the wick hole so wick only contacts it for about 3 or so mm, and top plate has a good breather hole in it - will see if it improves much, but if not then I really don't see what I'm not getting here, and I have one of the best 'Inner Sherlocks' to be found on the entire planet (and beyond LOL!).
Do I need a bigger atty that can acc. a 3mm wick, or am I just 'vaping too much' (impossible surely, heheheh...)?
Be well folks,
DV (Even when I can no longer see the TV - There's never enough Vapir!)
