A list of symptoms when quitting tobacco and changing to an ecigarette

Hey guys! Awesome posts! I'm still a newbie. Been vaping less than a week but your posts have helped put some fears to rest. I'm a bit of a psychologist, so when things start to happen to me I tend to explore why. My throat started killing me today so I was a bit discouraged. Then I realized that since vaping I've upped my coffee intake, which will dehydrate you BIG time! Such dehydration can be part of the throat soreness and also lead to achy muscles and muscle cramps. (I spent the day on a ladder doing some painting and it really wore me out and I sure didn't feel very stable up there!) So think about your coffee intake and see if you've upped it if you have any of those. I'm a giant coffee fan, so I definitely am NOT saying give up or cut down on coffee. But DO increase your water intake a bit and see if that helps.

Also check out the thread about sore throats. There's lots of great info there. I've been using a PG liquid and just ordered some VG to see if that helps with the throat thing. But also, the thread said to be sure to keep your atty wet. Being a newbie, I didn't know this. I've been keeping the carts well filled, but never thought about the atty. So I dropped a couple drops directly on the atty of my 510, took a hit, and it was immediately better. Maybe that's one reason we all get throat burn right off. We just don't have all the tech stuff down yet.

Also, in the throat thread they said to try gargling with some mouthwash once in a while. I did. It helped.

Finally, I noticed that I just pull different on the ecig than on an analogue. It's almost like I pull with my throat clenched. It may be from using a reeeeaaaallllly poor ecig that produced NO vapor before getting my 510 last week. But once I realized that I was pulling differently and started making sure to drop my shoulders, relax and open my throat it immediately helped.

Hope maybe this helps someone and keep the posts coming! Knowing I'm not the only one experiencing these things keeps me from hopping in the car to go get a pack and stink sticks!

OK, I confess I did not make it through this entire thread as it is late. I am wondering if the common symptoms associated with changing to PV's dissipate with time? I have been vaping for about three weeks now. I am well into my 40's and the acne seems to be getting worse. But what concerns me more is the urine changes. Not only does it smell but it is very cloudy. I smoked Marlboro Reds for about 35 years. The first three days of vaping I had one analog each day, I have not had another since. I do have several other health issues. In June of 09 I had my 7th and 8th serious spine surgeries since 2004 so I am not sure if my symptoms are due to vaping or not. Since vaping I am exhausted all the time, but rarely ever sleepy. I take prescription sleeping pills at night but I would estimate that I have had maybe 8 hours of sleep in the last five days. I would love to hear that others have had and overcome these symptoms since changing to vaping.

Trekie, I've noticed that I'm always tired as well since the switch, but haven't found a cure other than lots of sweet tea.

My issue is the pimple thing. My forehead is completely covered in them. Prior to beginning vaping on 11/29, I can't remember any more than an occasional one day pimple in the past fifteen years. Salicytic (sp) acid hasn't helped. Anyone have any other tips to cut the pimple problem?

Trekie,

I think acne is about the only negative effect that I've avoided with vaping.

I am thrilled to be off analogs after 57 years of endless smoking. [began at 13, and I'm 70] and I pray that I'll never cave and go back.

However, I have developed serious insomnia, taking double the suggested sleeping pills [my doc would crap if I tell him] and still tossing and turning for hours, often to 3 or 4 am. I get up totally exhausted.

My blood pressure has risen to frightening levels [at times 167+/] and my mouth is so dried out in the morning, that my gums hurt. I toss and turn and drink water 2-3 times a night because my gums and throat are so dry and painful.

I am switching to low nic VG juice [trying to order it now] trying to find some mouthwash moisturizer, and vow to spend more time on the treadmill [ugh] to get some sleep. I will also vap less, but really don't know how to measure it.

Like you, I welcome any suggestions.

@trekie @robertpri

I had these symptoms. It could be dehydration. Many of my symptoms matched the signs of dehydration posted at symptomsofdehydration website (I can't post links yet)

Many thanks, Deena. I have not changed much in my diet, but do drink a lot of coffee [on my list to reduce] and my standard 10 oz of wine at night.

Heart doc says two drinks are okay [1 drink wine = 5 oz, 2 drinks = 10]

However, I do admit to drinking perhaps double that. No excuse, but I hardly drank at all for over 15 years. Like, zero.

But doc okayed 10 oz with my high blood pressure, but I also realize alcohol contributes to dehydration. However, when one is desparate for sleep, and the max pills have been doubled, one will try wine--or anything.

Insomnia can really mess you up...

I will try to find that site.

edit: adding Deena's site about dehydration--worth reading

Bloating, I swear I have never been this bloated!!!!!

Sorry for that, but besides acne, about the only side affects that I've avoided.

However, I had a long chat with Chris at 'myfreedomsmoke' who was not only very helpful with my recent order, but also very knowledgeable.

Between him and other posts/threads on this forum, I am fully convinced the PG was/is the source of most of my problems. I ordered some VG nic flavored juice from him.

Last night, I diluted my PG 18-24mg nic juice with pure VG [50/50] which really weakened it, of course, but what a difference!

No dry mouth last night, I slept reasonably well for an insomniac, then tested my BP, both here and at Kaiser. Down 10-15 pts, and tested 4 times. Very happy about that.

I could be wrong, but it appears that unless you specifically order high levels of VG, that most orders are either all PG or very high concentrations.

I also learned for the first time how to measure the stuff. It seems that 20 drops is "about" one ML. That's old news to you pros, but news to me. So, 20 drops of 18-24mg of juice is around the same as the patch.

My highest level nic patch was 24 mg/day.

Now, if I can just relate that number to an analog or pack?

I want to know if I am vaping about the same as a pack or two of analogs, so I can slowly reduce it to, well, lower.

I've got a runny nose and little dry patches on my skin. Also noticed lots more nose hairs growing in??

With your senior status and number of posts, you probably know far more than I do. But as I noted, PG appears to be my problem, perhaps yours.

I seem to recall the patches of dry skin somewhere on this thread. [page 1?] but I suffered really bad dry mouth until last night. You suppose dry skin and dry mouth are related? Meaning, dehydrated? Maybe from PG?

I am looking forward to pure VG juice, which I'm told is not as strong flavored, but if problems disappear, I'm happy with it.

I have only vaped my own VG mix for a very short time, so I may get some VG liquid and vape on that for a while to see if the dryness clears up. I just don't want to sacrifice throat hit, which is my #1 priority.

I completely agree with the priority of the throat hit! And would be very curious how your VG mix works out, and how you mix it. [novice here--I just buy OTC juices]

I recently purchased some VG to cut my liquid to a lower nicotine level, but i havent really tried using it with the majority of my mixes. I know throat hit is pretty important to me as well and i dont want to lose that. over the last few days ive been dizzy (i think due to the 18mg nic i used on my Kr808d-1). its funny, cuz on my 510, i wasnt dizzy until i used it on the kr....so im wondering if its the PG or just a overdose of nic. any ideas?

So, I have been using an e-cig for about two weeks now. But today will only be day two of no "analog" cigarettes. If that's what yall are calling a real cigarette. I know I really really need to quit. I've had lung problems all my life. Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, etc. Doctor says I will be on oxygen by the time I'm 40 if I don't quit now. I did notice last night (the end of day one) that I could already breathe better than I have in YEARS! When I did cough, it was a deep horsey cough, a very cleansing feeling to be honest. I have had a HORRIBLE sore throat and very very swollen glands. You could pretty much imagine the worst head cold, allergies, sore throat imaginable, and you would be standing in my shoes. Plus I still want to rip everyone's head off. I don't want to be negative and I am trying really really hard to stay positive. My sore throat is starting to go away. Am I going from one bad habit to the next? Is nicotine bad for you, or is it all the carcinogenics? Will I ever be nice again? Can I use this as a stepping stone to walking away from cigarettes and nicotine forever? If so, how!? I want to smell and taste and sit through a whole movie again! I AM TOO YOUNG TO BE THIS ADDICTED!!!!! Help

Well, there are several schools of though here. First, is that you're not only addicted to the nicotine, that you're also addicted to the other chemicals in cigarettes. Once you ween yourself off the analogs with the e-cig (even at high nic levels) you can begin to cut down on the nicotine. Once you're down there, you can literally go to 0 nicotine and then all you need to do is kick the hand-to-mouth habit.

Nicotine, in and of itself, is not inherently bad for you. But all things in moderation. It would be better to not have any nicotine regularly but e-cigs are way better than analogs.

HI, I just bought an e-cig straight from china and kinda cool but do get a weird taste. company suposedly produces high quality with certificates but my mouth is very dry. I guess the e-cig is using the moisture from my mouth to make the vapor?

Ne ways, what does PG and VG cigs mean?

Does anybody know who makes the best e-cigs? Do they all come from china? Do they all give you a weird taste with the dry mouth?

thanks....
