All we have to go on is conjecture. The OP falsely reported some dude blew himself up at a cloud comp... then we have some half-assed news report from a liquor store incident. And... we then have a bunch of folks jumping to conclusions and throwing folks who don't vape like they do straight under the bus. It is damn near pathetic.

"Oh, hey, look! Some jackwad is blowing phat CLOUDZ! He is the reason the FDA is dropping the hammer on respectable vaperz!"

If there is any factual evidence I've overlooked, please clue me in.

This^^

Even when they 'know better' they'll push the boundaries of safety to be competitive. These types of incidents even make ME wonder if SOME regulation isn't necessary. Imagine what they do for non-vapers. You can't fix 'stupid' and I'm all for letting evolution run its course but maybe mechanicals simply pose too much danger.

Regulations won't stop mechanicals because people will still make them and just start selling them on Craigslist and through Facebook groups.

I personally do not mind race car drivers wanting to drive faster than the other nutcases in a little circle, some get hurt or worse. It is their choice.

I do not mind skateboarders wanting to do flips higher than the other skateboarders, some get hurt or worse. It is their choice.

I do not mind that people want to jump off of stupidly low structures for parachuting, some get hurt or worse. It is their choice.

I do not mind that people want to blow bigger clouds than others, some get hurt, very few. It really is their choice.

People here and other vaping sites complain about people cloud chasing wanting to regulate how they vape, when you scoff at these cloud chasers and state how stupid it is and that they shouldn't....

Hey, guess what, you just became part of the regulatory party.

/non-cloud blowing flavor chaser who sometimes safely volume vapes. It really is my choice.

I don't mind people wanting to engage in high-risk activities but how about they lose any social benefits if it goes horribly wrong. Like, if you break your arm skateboarding or blow off your fingers cloud chasing with a mechanical mod, you don't get any medical attention unless you are paying cash, from the EMS response to the emergency room to the operating room? Don't cause the taxpayer or your fellow health insurance policy holder to pick up the tab for your shortage of brain cells? Inevitably, their actions effect more people. These days you can cloud chase safely with as much power as a mechanical using a high wattage regulated mod. If people can't be safe with mechanicals then there's a reasonable argument to be made for why mechanicals should even be available.

Nope you covered it....I pulled up three other "News" reports of this incident and they are all just re-prints of the first article. No mention of a "Cloud chasing comp" ....Just shows how far a little mis-information can go.

Guess I need to start storing my dangerous mechs alongside my dangerous firearms in the safe. ;-)

I just have to wonder what the user did to cause this?

Like in my mind.. to put a mod or any e-cig in your purse or pocket when the button could be pushed down is equal to putting a lit analog in your pocket.

Sounds like the Mod didn't Vent well when the Battery Failed.

But this is just a Guess.

Maybe we make it like driving a car... You need to take a test and pay a fee before you can cloud chase in public... Lol

I agree we shouldn't automatically assume cloud chasers are idiots. Sure, some are, but others take the time to know what they are doing and do it safely. We should attempt to educate those that aren't and politely warning them of what can happen if they aren't safe.
I agree news like this doesn't help the cause, but we can learn from this. Cloud comps should all have regulations - you've gotta take a build and battery safety class to participate. Battery tests (not sure how that would work) and an ohm check before you start... Not saying this was at a cloud comp, but I think that would go a long way to sharing the knowledge and encouraging safe building... It doesn't help that even some b&m builders are uneducated

Regulation will not stop regulated mods either, the OKR-T chips and the Raptor chips are not made for vaping they are just power regulation chips for the electronics industry.

There are a lot of arguments there, but I was not looking for an argument. I think mechanicals should be available for the same reason I think people should be able to own guns. Last time I checked the claim was that we live in a "free" country, what ever that means these days. Whatever the activity is, baking cookies, making hot dogs, growing tomatoes, driving a car, or "blowing clouds" Someone is going to come along and want to do it bigger, faster, longer, larger than the person before them. There is a world book of records for some of this silly stuff.

At the end of the day high risk activities are a negligible impact on health care and tax dollars, politicians and rich people hurt the bottom line the most. That brings us to the next thing, people blowing clouds, or part of their faces off are not going to be the death knell for "free vaping" Those same politicians and rich people who are losing their precious tax dollars and sales revenue are going to be the ones that sign the warrant, and it won't be for fringe incidents. It will be some made up something that serves as an excuse to protect the bottom line.

Lots of blaming here.

I'm gonna say, it was probably a $4 ego knockoff he bought AT the liquor store. Tried to light it with a Zippo right next to the vodka aisle.
Ban cigalikes! Ban Vodka! Shut down all the liquor stores!!
People are liable to blow off their faces if we just let them buy Zippos willy-nilly!

I don'r trust any stories like this...I can see stunts like this being staged En Masse in order for BT and BP to push for harsh regulation... Not saying this report isn't valid I'm just saying I wouldn't take everything at face value.

Could be.

Or maybe if this Guy had on his Tin Foil Hat he Wouldn't have gotten Burned so Bad?

;)

Even more disheartening than the possibility that some super-sub-ohm, crazy mech using freak blew himself up is that so many here just automatically assume it was some super-sub-ohm, crazy mech using freak. I often wonder if we aren't our own worst enemy. I should probably remove myself from this "discussion" before I earn the ban hammer.

Not to encapsulate a whole town, but this part specifically has a lot of shady characters. For lack of better word, many variations of white trash. Years ago one owner of a gas station hired one of his employees to burn down his house so he could collect the insurance, but the employee ended up dying in the fire. Needless to say he didn't get a penny out of that idea.
