On the flip side, ethanol is counteracting that, wearing things out more :p
A bit more maybe, but the new engines still last a very long time. Ethanol was hell on the old carbs with the old rubber diaphrams and such in them. Carb kits are expensive now. $50 for my old 72 f100 carb kit.

Engnes were pretty much worn out at 75k. The metals, tolerances and lubricants have increased dramatically in quality and the better fuels have also improved things.
Fuel injection and electronic ignitions are wonderful things. No more flooding carbs washing down you cylinder walls and causing wear. Replacing points and plugs every 20k or less.
Now one can expect to not even do anything to an engine except change oil for the first 100,000 miles.

All true. But when something does need to be fixed now, it's off to the dealer and a very expensive repair bill. I used to do 99% of my own auto service and repairs on all my vehicles. There wasn't anything mechanical or electrical on my '66 that I couldn't diagnose and fix myself (and probably did over 30 years). For 15 years now, my daily drivers go to a great, honest mechanic because I can't even diagnose the darned things half of the time. Often, there's a $389 proprietary tool required to replace a $20 part... I still insist on doing all the general maintenance myself. I'm stubborn that way. :D

So far I still fix all my problems except auto trans rebuilds. With a fluid/filter change and using the new syn tranny fluid not many problems with them. Most fail because no one changes the filter and fluid.
Of course I am an electronics tech which helps repair new cars. Also worked as an AC technician for a while. And used to hang out at my friends auto repair shop and help them and learn. I can rebuild older TH350/400 and even 79090 series trannys and such, but the newer ones with 6 speeds, etc....
A good tech manual is my best friend in auto repair.

And no trouble at all repairing pink water heaters.

This '66 was my very first car. It was given to me when I was almost 16. I received it in primer gray, with the interior and drive train in separate boxes. But it had a brand new top and the chrome was practically perfect! I had her almost 30 years and sold over a year ago now. It was only a tootle puffer with the I6 and 3 speed. But it was a purty tootle puffer...

Well all this talk about cars and driving has brought up another interesting tidbit from my area...

It appears now that our police here are issuing warnings to people who vape while driving. It seems that they are classifying it the same as using a cell phone or mp3 player etc while driving since it is an electronic device...

When will this foolishness come to an end?

Do you ever feel targeted?
Canada seems harsh on vaping...

if they are blowing clouds in the car it does obstruct vision. For simple reasonable use though and I hate to say this but it should be treated the same as smokiing.

It is becoming that way.
Unfortunately we are a really complacent bunch of sheep sometimes. "If it doesn't affect me directly then whats the big deal?" type of crap... I think a few politicians need to be shot at to change minds and attitudes. It seems to work for you guys. ;)

I agree on the clouds, but this is a guy in a delivery truck driving down the road with the window open vaping on a regular everyday device.

No ticket was given, just a warning since it is a grey area at the moment.

Uncle, you do know how the Flintstone Mobile works, don't you? (hint: watch the feet)

HEY - I'm not that young, NOT to know . . .

Oh - I hope Ya' remember Barney had short legs too . . . ;)

if they are blowing clouds in the car it does obstruct vision.

Yep - Sure does . . . Matter of fact, I was driving on major highway and saw such "clouds" bellowing from the driver's side window 4 cars ahead of "Me" going about 60+ MH in the slow lane . . . AND - When I finally caught up to them I could see they had this HUGE MOD with a RBA just "tokin" away taking more hits blowing clouds with absolutely no concern about what was happening around them as the vapor was filling the car too . . . Thankfully - I was personally glad to see that the "Kid" (Yes - "KID" and looked it too) was heading towards the exit . . .

BTW: When Driving & Vaping - I Am, Without A Doubt, A "Tootle Puffer" - I been using either a KR808 or 1300 Battery w/cartomizer - so at this time I do not think I will ever have a problem . . . Unless they ban "Smoking" in your vehicles, like they have already done some places by banning smoking and the use of an "eCig" both inside and outside your own home . . .  :censored:

For simple reasonable use though and I hate to say this but it should be treated the same as smokiing.

Well - I am a little trepidatious to say this - but let's be real honest here, they are treating the use of an "eCig"/"Vaping" as "smoking" a cigarette - that is why a lot of people are trying to ban its use . . . AND - For the majority of "Us", the use of an "eCig" & Vaping is like "Smoking" and no matter how "We" try to say it is not the same - "Vaping" is very similar to the actual act of smoking and just one of the many different reasons why "We" are now using an "eCig" and Vaping to supplement "Our" addiction and habit . . . Just "My" opinion and :2c: . . .

EDIT:
Well it looks like we are just playing catch up with you guys down there in the US.
New York Man Earns Traffic Ticket for Vaping Behind the Wheel - ChurnMag

Can "We" say "Anti-Smoking-Zealot" Police Officer that had to meet their "Ticket Quota" for the day . . . Just Sayin' . . . :censored:

LMAO at the "first cars". Mine was my dads old work car. A 48 Chevy. The passenger side floorboard (where dad packed his chain saws & stuff) was made up of chicken wire & old linoleum. My GF said she didn't like that because there was a cold draft going up her legs.

In todays world I guess we could call that an "airy draw". ;)

It looked kinda like this one.
