Because the "average" man uses his tools because it's fun to tinker

Ah, so now I know I am not "average." :?: I use my tools only because a job "has to be done," not because they are a hobby or I love to tinker. Someone HAS to mow the lawn, fix the truck, build the cabinets, repair the damage the dang cows do to the barn and fences, etc. Today I have to climb up to the rafters in the cow barn and install a new fan, which involves cutting/splicing wires, etc. while standing on top of a 10-foot ladder and I hate ladders, but it must be done and you cannot get Lannie more than a couple feet off the ground. She cooks because we have to eat (it is 75 miles to the nearest fast food place). I can cook too (not as good as she does), but we believe in a reasonably even division of labor. She does inside and I do outside, which, for us, works out pretty even. Oh, she milks the cows (outside) because she wants to. I hate cows, but she loves them. But, hey, I do my own laundry...

Quick question about Lannie's new X6 (arrived today - she's busy making cheese <because she wants to, not has to>),

To go with the cheese

Cool, the term "techie" is used by a lot of theater techs. So it made me curious.
I am just a onetime Certified Electronics Tech with a 1st class FCC license. Which I let expire years ago... Been a server and software technodweeb for the past 15 years. Just working a fill in job now till I retire officially next year. My last tech job went to India. I could find something better at lexington but do not want to spend 2-3 hours on the road each day so I work up at Mt Sterling at Lowes now. So far I have not killed any stupid customers, hope I can make it till this time next year ;)

Same here, I am good at repairing vehicles but do not enjoy doing it. I have always done it to save money and get a good repair job.
I can fix almost anything but play dumb to keep everyone from swamping me with please fix this for me things.

I do HVAC, Carpentry, plumbing, electrical, electronics, welding, a bit of machining but few tools for that right now.
And now I have added vaping to my skillset.

I also do laundry, cook and general domestic duties.

I cannot dance though....

I had to use pliers.

OK, I left the dungeon (where the computers reside) and went upstairs, put a paper towel around the chrome end so as to not scratch it, and used my Leatherman. The end came off. Thanks for your help.

We seem to be very similar, Robert. I haven't done metal machining since, oh, about 1976, but my wood lathe occasionally gets turned on. :) My welding is restricted to what a small MAPP unit does (plus brazing and soldering). Don't own an arc/mig/full-sized gas torch, though I often wish I had that stuff. I can dance, however, but Lannie doesn't, so it never happens (like we could even find a place to do such in the middle of Nowhere, South Dakota).

I have a couple of stick welders and an Oxy/acy setup although I do most of my cutting with oxy/propane. Have a cheap mig outfit and would like to have a tig outfit, but getting a bit late in life for that. I do most of my metal cutting that I can with an abrasive chop saw and sometimes my metal cutting bandsaw. I have a cheap drill press and a large ancient one with a 3 inch or so chuck ;) I also have an 8 ft sheet metal brake and some electric shears which are danged handy when working tin and ductwork.
Went looking for my mini metal lathe a while back and apparently someone carried it off....

I have the basics for woodworking except I need a new thickness planer Some idiot with the same name as me dropped a big hunk of I beam on my old one....

I'm not average either, so what do I know?
FWIW, I NEVER give practical stuff (like tools, blenders, vacuum cleaners, ...) as gifts unless the giftee specifically asks for it. :toast:

I'd still like one of these though:

I think the OK ranges are different for TC wire. For nickel, I see ±0.15 a lot; for titanium, I see ±0.36 a lot. So maybe it's OK to not have to do so many wraps. Yes, you're subohming, but not in the same sense as you would with Kanthal....not that I'm there yet.

Your ranges are accurate but it's not really sub-ohmming. The Ni and Ti wire is used because it's variable resistance. As the wire heats up it increases it's resistance, so when you actually take a tootle puff the resistance had gone up and no longer sub-ohm.

How variable resistance will effect amperage and battery life, who knows, use it and see. A TC mod has the coil resistance constantly changing and is changing the wattage setting depending on the changing resistance. Makes it tough to actually come up with accurate numbers.

I use to have people coming by all the time with problems with their cars and it was all the missus family friends. I would look at the car, go get parts and fix it for them and no one would even offer me a nickel for it, just a thanks and away they went so I started adding $50 to $100 to each estimate of what it would take to fix the car with the money due up front. For some strange reason they stop coming by lol

Yeah, and after you spent money out of your pocket on parts they would be like "I will pay ya at the end of the month" and I would be like you can pick your car up at the end of the month too lol

I have one that's about 15 years old that seldom gets used because I am too lazy to change (or resharpen) the blades. That thing is also part of my hearing problem. It didn't sound that loud to me, but when someone else walked into the shop one day, he covered his ears and had to yell at me to get my attention. I rarely work sheet metal anymore, and if I have to (the barns, shop, and garage are all metal), I use one of the dozen ball peens and a hunk of hardwood beam to bend it over. Do all my metal cutting with abrasive discs or saber saws (whatever is cheap and quick). My band saw is strictly for wood, as are the jig saws, table saw, and chop saw. The little drill press gets used for darn near everything! I occasionally sit out there wondering if the shop burned down, how much would it cost to replace all this crap (not that all of it would need to be replaced) because these tools have accumulated over a lifetime. What was a $10 tool 40 years ago is in the hundreds today. Sigh...

Im like "what?" and she is all mad because I am looking at younger women. I was like "dear, you said I could have a pet, im picking one out now". She wasnt amused lol
