"40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

I don't really understand this verse. If Jesus was going to spend 3 days somewhere in the "heart of the earth" why did he tell the thief that "today you will be with me in paradise"?

Aren't the soul and spirit the same thing?

Some believe so but you will get varied answers. IMO they are separate. Spirit is the portion of you given from God and returns to God who gave it...the breath of life so to speak. Soul is you and will be either in paradise or torment. Body returns to the earth.

I don't know if you remember when there was a question asked here about "paradise" and Hades, etc. I replied that, before the cross, people went to Hades. Hades is divided into two sections---one side called "torments" in the Old Testament, and the other side of the chasm was referred to as Paradise or Abraham's bosom. Paradise was where believers in the Messiah went BEFORE the cross. This is explained in Luke 16:19-26. When Jesus died, He was buried "in the earth". But we also know that His soul/spirit went to the “paradise” side of sheol/hades. He then removed all the righteous dead from paradise and took them with Him to heaven. (This is what is being spoken of in Ephesians 4:7-9.) The thief was one of the "captives" that He was with in Paradise that day and took with Him when He ascended.

My mom and I have talked about this a few times, and we are both concerned if we have ever done it or not. I did some online research about it a while back that brought me some comfort, read an article that said if you're worried about it, then you probably have not done it because it's more of a heart condition of denying and hating Jesus, then actual spoken words out of ignorance.

I dont' know.........

It's something that a lot of us commit before coming to Christ--denying the work of the Holy Spirit in pointing to Jesus. But since you've become a Christian, you're no longer denying the witness of the Holy Spirit to the saving power of Christ---in other words, you're no longer saying that Jesus did what He did through the power of Satan. You've repented and you've been forgiven. The difference with the Pharisees is that Jesus knew their hearts and that they would never repent of the things that they were saying. The article you read was correct. If you're worried about committing it, then in all likelihood you haven't. I might post an article later on today that my friend, Robert, wrote on the subject.

This is something that I always worry about, the unforgivable sin. I sit and try and remember if I"ve ever done it, and I do get anxiety about it because I really don't know. I"ve said alot of things in my life, most of which I don't even remember.

This is what was spiritually imparted to me.

Ok thanks guys!

Another question. Jesus said that He is Lord of the Sabbath. I remember reading somewhere earlier in Matthew where Jesus said to remember the sabbath and keep it holy, or something like that.

Now Jesus Himself is saying to remember the sabbath, and that He is lord of the sabbath, and yet we as christians don't pay attention to the sabbath. Why not? If it wasn't important why did He keep on bringing it up?

Oh ok, well that makes sense! :)

Where in the bible does it say they are seperate?

My understanding of the Sabbath was it's OK to 'help' people on that day, but that we shouldn't 'work' as in 'laboring to earn $money' on that Day. We should reserve (set aside exclusively) that day for praising, worshiping God and helping others if the need arises. We really need the 'body rest' for health reasons of ceasing to labor on the Lord's appointed 'day of rest'. The Jewish Nation observes Saturday as the true Sabbath so that is the day I observe also but not to the condemnation of those who observe the Sunday sabbath as I believe Christ did not abolish the Law on the Cross but fulfilled it by allowing us the freedom of that grace to observe Him on whatever day we 'choose'. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.. not to sin willfully, but to err with a pure heart. Some may beg to differ but that's OK as this is just my personal spiritual revelation on this... ;)

PS - I choose the Saturday as the true Sabbath as that was the 'day' Moses gave the Jewish Nation and if it was significant 'then', well to me at least, it's significant now.. but that's just me... (lol)

Exodus 20:11

8 “ Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

As you said, Jesus said that he is the Lord of the Sabbath. In Mark 2:27, He said, "Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." God "created" the Sabbath because He knew that man would eventually get so busy working and trying to make money that they would not make time for the Lord OR for resting. When He "worked" for six days creating the world, He then rested on the seventh to set a pattern for taking time to rest. Jews traditionally observe Sabbath from what we call sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. The Pharisees had turned the simple commandment that God had given into a list of things that were considered "work". I found this list...
1. Sowing
2. Plowing
3. Reaping
4. Binding sheaves
5. Threshing
6. Winnowing
7. Selecting
8. Grinding
9. Sifting
10. Kneading
11. Baking
12. Shearing wool
13. Washing wool
14. Beating wool
15. Dyeing wool
16. Spinning
17. Weaving
18. Making two loops
19. Weaving two threads
20. Separating two threads
21. Tying
22. Untying
23. Sewing two stitches
24. Tearing
25. Trapping
26. Slaughtering
27. Flaying
28. Salting meat
29. Curing hide
30. Scraping hide
31. Cutting hide up
32. Writing two letters
33. Erasing two letters
34. Building
35. Tearing a building down
36. Extinguishing a fire
37. Kindling a fire
38. Hitting with a hammer
39. Taking an object from the private domain to the public, or transporting an object in the public domain.

Although it was enacted by rabbis before our times, you can add things for today's life. Turning on a light switch is a violation of #37. So, is turning on a stove. So, very "devout" Jews will prepare their meals the day before the Sabbath to be eaten cold so that they wouldn't have to heat it up.

Since the beginning of the church, Christians have observed their day of rest as the Lord's Day (Sunday) commemorating the day of the Lord's resurrection, although not all do. In today's culture with work schedules, it's not always possible to observe either the Saturday or a Sunday day of rest. In that case, a person could decide what their day of rest and worship should be. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Body= physical body
soul=consciousness, that thing that is "centered" in your head, thinks, and pears out from your eyes. The consciousness or soul will exist in eternity (Heaven or Hell)
spirit=given by God to those who are saved (Ephesians 1) we share the same Spirit as/with God, given as a down payment and token or portion of the fullness of the Spirit that we are promised to receive in the day of the Lord.

Lost man is sometimes considered a dichotomy (dual nature, body, soul) and the saved a trichotomy (tri-natured, body, soul, spirit).

All consciousness will enter into eternity. Those without the Spirit of God marking ownership will spend it separated from His presence. Those with the seal of the Spirit spend it with God.
