Ok, I'm here, where's the bible study teacher at????? :)

Question: Since mary and joseph were not yet married, why is divorce mentioned? I don't understand that.

And if Jesus was named Immanuel, why do we call Him Jesus?

As I understand at that time, Divorce was strictly forbidden, until death do you part was actually a literal thing. The only thing that could change that would be adultery, and even then you wouldn't get an official divorce, just what we would consider an annulment.

The use of divorce is more in line with the other definition, which is simply a separation. For an ECF appropriate example, I will divorce myself from my addiction to cigarettes.

Very true. Betrothal is a very serious/marriage like situation. Before the angel explained this to Joseph, it had to be the most upsetting thing to deal with. We'll see the idea/concept that tornado is speaking of more when we get to Matthew 19:9.

Southern Gent you are certainly humble but you are exactly correct when you say that God IS awesome. I have wondered from time to time about the name being different but since I never really dwelt on it, thanks for the question (Lisa) and the answer (Southern Gent).
Glad this whole thread was started along with the great idea of the Bible Study. God does work in mysterious ways. Who knew why we all met here along with Southern gent, as well as each other. I have never believed in coincidence in my entire life. I pity and pray for those who do, and those who do not believe in God.

Kelly,
In God We Trust

might just be an effort to be low profile....how would you feel if your new neighbors introduced themselves......"and this is our oldest.....he's the son of God"....besides, they couldn't really ignore verse 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,

Not to mention the death decree that Herod put on all the male children. Herod was looking for him for sure so telling anybody who he was is highly out of the question....at least one would think. It was a pretty common name so I guess Herod figured He'd kill them all.

LOL! I never thought about that before. Imagine being the next door neighbor and your kid wants to go over to "God's house" and play for a while with God. LOL!!!!!!!!! :)

I ain't Jewish.....well...don't reckon

Well, I am.....well only the left side. :p One of the most disheartening ongoing conversations I had with what used to be a dear friend of mine, is trying to explain why the church doesn't worship on the Shabbat. (sabbath) No Scripture or explanation would explain it to her because it states in the 10 Commandments to remember the sabbath and keep it holy. I never could explain it to her satisfaction because of the 10 Commandments. (BTW, her daddy is a 7th Day Adventist, who thinks all sunday goers will receive the mark of the beast and never enter heaven.) I tried everything .... even told her to keep them both, if she felt she needed to. It was wacky! I explained 'The Lord's Day' and the whole nine yards. Didn't matter. I couldn't by Scripture refute the 10 Commandments. And, I really didn't want to do that anyway!

Ok smarty pants! :p

I was reading the Gospel of Thomas today, and verse 27 says "If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the (Father's) kingdom. If you do not observe the sabbath as a sabbath you will not see the Father."

What's your take on that?

My favorite verse from Gospel of Thomas is "Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there."

I love that one because it reminds me how accessible God is to each and every one of us, at all times. All you have to do is look.

Another question: Why were some gospels included in the bible and others not?

Men from the Catholic church decided what is in the Bible. Done basically by popularity and what they "felt" or "deemed".
These were not accepted because of the nature of the people who wrote them. These are the people whom John is dealing in 1,2,3 John. Give me a few and I'll type up something about the Gnostics for ya.
