I did a bit of research this evening. The general consensus with "reputable" Bible teachers lies in the words of the demons who recognized Christ and asked if He had come to torture them before the "appointed time". They know their eternal destiny and recognized Jesus' authority. They did not want to be sent to the Abyss and asked instead to be sent into the herd of pigs. Knowing that it was not the "appointed time", Jesus honored their request. (We're told in another gospel account of the same incident that the demon's name was Legion and was actually about 2000 demons possessing the 2 men.) When the demons went into the herd of pigs, the pigs could not take it and drove themselves into the lake. (One teacher--don't remember who--suggested that the demons were hoping that maybe the owners of the pigs hearing what had happened would come out and kill Jesus for ruining their livelihood. They did not kill Him, but came to ask Him to leave.)
This is just slightly 'off topic'.. I'd like to share one of the many reasons the Muslim People don't eat Pork. Their main reason is little different from ours.. but not much.. according to the Koran, when Moses came down from the Mountain bearing the ten commandments he found the People had been 'unfaithful' so out of anger Allah turned the idolatrous Tribes into Pigs... so when People eat Pork, they (Arabs) consider it akin to cannibalism. Their 'other' reason is it's considered 'unclean' same as the the Biblical reasons stated in Leviticus 11 & Deuteronomy 14. I'm not sure if the Koran mentions Demons going into Pigs or not? It's been so long I can't remember.
