Just a small update on the wick material.

The closest match to it I have found is the CE2R4 wick. The inner core of Kevlar and the Stove rope both appear to be glass fibre, although not combustible like the original wick the heat does seem to overwhelm the glass fibre here though and it degrades much too quickly. Although its appearance and wicking properties do seem similar it is not the right stuff. Cannot withstand the heat.

So I can only assume that whatever is being used is still a fibre, it just isn't glass as the temperate it can withstand isn't high enough. As far as I am aware this only leaves ceramic fibre. You can see how ceramic fibre wool reacts to heat and a naked flame in the video below:

I pulled a wick out of a DSE901 recently and held it directly in a blue flame for a minute or two, and it glowed red hot but showed no sign of burning afterwards. It actually cleaned it up nicely. There's a common assertion that when you get a bad taste from atty's its usually down to the wick burning, and I just wanted to see if that was the case.

I'd read somewhere that they used aramid fibre for the wicks (kevlar is an example of this, but there is quite a number of similar materials).

Well from the burn tests I have done, we are talking about temperatures in excess of 1000c and aramid fibres will just carbonise at those sort of temperatures. Whereas whatever this is made of, and from the sounds of it what you found in the 901, if it doesn't carbonise and decompose then it has to be something else. Also the aramid fibres I have are yellow, mostly these wicks we are all using are a silvery white.

BTW thanks for doing all this testing. I gotta agree cetin is a good chocie for the wick since is selling the wick and wire (so I stocked up :p), but the shipping..... :( That can't be helped though

glad to see you in this thread POC. How would you compare vapor and taste between the Bulli A2 and Genesis? I am interested because I have both en route.

IMHO ... no big difference. I read some users likes Genesis taste much but for me with A2 is realy, realy good taste. I'm very satisfied how I spend money. Next I intend try Genesis with silica ropes.

That is the problem Jolly, most of these pages about silica fiber as rope/twine etc lead back to China and I am wondering if they are merely using the word silica as a keyword and that it is actually more commonly called something else. Probably ceramic fibre.

Seems weird that it isn't listed in fibers on wikipedia. If you look under mineral wool you will spot ceramic. Basalt I am not sure about and I will leave asbestos for someone else to try lol

PoC have you compared the wicks then, are they the same?

All you have to do is take a cigarette lighter or a candle to them and see how it reacts. Depending on the reaction there is quite a lot of written information online and you can usually work out what the material is.

I know that but when I order from UK for example I can't do that.
