The Republicans controlled the Senate for many years, and they were far less accommodating than Reid and Dodd have been when it comes to amendments and debate. It goes both ways. A few years ago it really sucked to be a Democratic Senator. In the future the Republicans will gain control again and the game will start all over again. That's how a two party system works.
No problem. This stuff isn't simple to understand. The only reason I have a marginal handle on it is that I come from a journalism background. My dad covered state and national politics for a major metro daily for over 35 years. He eventually joined the editorial board where he drove policy for political reporting. I have a lot of first hand experience with the process. It's long and drawn out. Nothing government does ever happens quickly. Even if the bill were passed tomorrow and the FDA chose to throw down a ban it would probably be months before the products were off the market, and legal challenges to the ban could delay their removal even longer. We have at least some breathing room. No need to panic yet.
Does anyone know for sure if there are any additional amendments that pertain to e-cigarettes and snus? When will they be discussing these? I can't just sit by the TV all day waiting

Hatch already said he would be going over 10 minutes and there were others who wanted to speak. Last night I think they ended their session at 6pm et if that means anything.
riddle80: I don't have the text of any of the proposed amendments, but Dodd and Reid said yesterday that some of them addressed "lower risk smoking alternatives" so I assume that covers e-cigarettes. If you want to know for sure you might want to search at THOMAS (Library of Congress) or call your Senator's office. They can usually track that info down for you.

I'm having trouble finding the text of the amendments though. All I'm coming up with are amendments that seem to be unrelated to the real issue - Federal retirement provisions.
I still can't believe the unrelated stuff that gets tacked on to bills! Like allowing concealed weapons to be carried in National Parks passing as an amendment to the Credit Card 'reform' bill.

Ron's my Senator.
He has a bit of a lisp but he is making more sense to me than Hatch who seeed to drone on. Many people would be embarassed, he is inspiring and a great example of how silly we can be sometimes in regards to our own imperfections.

Tobacco companies circumvent rules.
current smokers deserve to know more about what they are smoking. There is no safer cigarette and tobacco companies are deceptive when labeling them low tar and as light.
Avg age of starting is before 19. 1 in 7 highschoolers smoke in her state and will all die while costing the state alot of money.
maine maximized their tobacco money to reduce tobacco use.
more on childred being marketed, joe camel and new scheme of packaging and flavors.
(she holds up camels coconut flavored.)
time to protect kids and send message to tobacco industry.
