@Cyrus Vap: much appreciate the compliments... thank you :)

Good looking 'tol! vape on!!! :)

Pinoy too? From your Instagram pics I thought of that, but your name sounds more Chinese LOL. Or maybe I read the wrong name.

BTW, I can't wait to rebuild my other attys. Can't wait to find out how will this work in the smaller attys like the mini rda and ERA. I'm also curious how a doubled-over nano dragon coil (where you wrap together two pieces of wire to form one coil) will work. I bet it will be good.

Yup Pinoy :) as for my name used on IG, it's more into Japanese. I'm active in the JDM car scene. That's also where the "dragon" setup was inspired.

Just maintain airflow in your coil and you're gold. Let me is know how it goes.

I want to do this very badly. I don't have a fancy mech though... just a K100 I picked up recently. I'm new to vaping...

You have any tutorial vids on how to build this stuff? I want that vapor production now! Don't make me drive to Chicago and beg you to make me one!

Nothing wrong with the K-100, it will still hit well with this. MY wife is hitting this coil off my old K-100. I will try to do a video the next time I need to wrap a coil. But this is pretty simple. IF you know how to wrap a normal coil, you can do a micro/nano coil...

This is how I wrap mine so I hope my step by step instructions are easy enough to follow:

Choose your gauge wire. I use 28-32 depending on what I grab...
find something to wrap onto. A lot of people use a 1/16th drill bit. I use either an 18g needle or a paperclip.
Wrap it x amount of times. Entirely up to you. Most people I have seen do 8-10 wraps on 28g wire.
After I wrap on my paperclip, I squeeze the coil together to try to get it as tight as possible.
Then I remove the coil from the paperclip.
I then hold one of the tails with a pair of needle nose pliers and apply a flame to it. I use either my stove or a mini torch to get it red hot.
Remove from heat and using another pair of pliers, squeeze the coil together. The coil at this point should pretty much stay tight and touching. You can repeat this process as often as you feel comfortable.
After cooling, (I just let it cool by itself for a min), I attach the coil to the atomizer. Once it is on, I burn it a few times, I actually squeeze the coil together with pliers to see if it needs further "adjustments" and to make sure the coil heats evenly, from inside out. Then lay down the bedding, and adjust the coil to lay nicely on the bed.... Fire away!!

Hey dice

Yes that's all cotton in there. I used a 3/64 bit so the OD of that coil is narrow. There is a 1-1.5 mm distance between the opening of the air hole and the bottom coil. The top of the coil doesn't get near the top of the funnel cap. This was a tricky set up in that if you have too much cotton beneath the bottom coil, even if its clear of the air hole, it seems to drip backwards into your air intake and cause flooding.

Seemed to work best if the entirety of the coil was covered (OD) but I left the space between the air hole and coil open. Which makes sense I guess, any wick down there isn't really in direct contact with coil so its going to tend to hold on to juice and leak it down the hole.

I had a thought that a larger outer diameter coil might help with this, but I really think narrow diameter is part of the magic here as Iteo is saying, as it increases pressure and vaporization if the wick is set up right. I tried lowering the coil but anything around 1mm or less seemed to drip/gurgle into the air intake.

Anyway this is easily the most intense vape I've ever gotten out of a bottom air device, and believe me I don't give the Russian any credit, it all goes to Iteo ;). I'm going to keep playing with it to make sure I'm not nuts. I've tried a few regular 'micros' already and they weren't this good. Shaping the cotton appropriately for a vertical is a PITA though!

EDIT: And please keep us posted, I'm curious if you find an optimal height for the coil, shaping the wick, and any gurgling experiences. I'll do the same.

Cyrus,

I used a 1/16" bit, fit perfect into the air hole so made mounting and adjusting height a breeze. I did a second coil with the height a bit higher than my first. Next time I change out the cotton will try and measure it. Did discover on key factor, the more fluffy the cotton the better. And to much cotton and she floods. Going to try a lower resistant wire and try a smaller diameter next time, I did a 10 wrap coil with 30amg came out to ~2.3ohms. Of course when I build a small diameter, the ohm's will drop a bit. 1/16" was the smallest I had, but 1/64" smaller looks like it creates a better vortex turbo effect. But as she is, it vapes fantastic. But want more fantastic-ness lol Was going to change out my cotton yesterday but my genesis rba showed up, and was playing with it. So far they both give comparable vape, but the Volcanic Dragon is more reliable and no fuss setup.

do i need 28/30 awg wire or will 32awg work?

Any gage will work with this build, it's just the more ohms in the build the more volts you need to dial in the sweet spot. Use what you have, then decide if you want to change your size of wire. I just happen to have 3 different gage wire, and can play with a bit of each. Hopefully I'll get it fine tuned before I need to purchase a roll of wire.

Hello everyone.

I've been lurking on this thread for a bit and I gotta say this is pretty nifty.

Just for clarification, this is basically the same concept a cartomizer uses except the goal is instead of the user drawing air through the coil, the coil creates its own "pressure" by vaporizing the liquid.

I'm just curious. I'm going to pick up an igo-l tonight and try it out. I feel my trident may be a little too cramped for a single coil build. Especially when I'm a noob to micro coils.

you have a bigger coil with bigger hole... wrap your entire coil in cotton without covering the holes as that's where the air passes through and atomizes you juice. let me know the result ;)

I just check the t-pin that i used to wrap my coil... it's slightly larger than a large paper clip but it's smaller than a 1/16" drill bit... so i think the coil is fine... I tried iTEO wicking method going under and through posts, it gets a little better but i might need to try some thicker cotton

Are all issues sorted out? I was following the thread mobile but for some reason I can't login on my phone.

Here's how I bed mine, granting that you already secured your coil on the post and pulsed it
1. slightly bend the coil upward
2. thread your cotton under the coil (keep your cotton loose and fluffy, do not compact or roll into a rope)
3. wrap your cotton around the positive post
4. around and under the end of the cotton wick
5. around wrap it around the negative post and in between the negative and positive post
6. cut the cotton just enough that you can slip it under the positive lead of your coil
7. cut and trim the fanned out cotton end to finish your bed, trim away to your liking
8. bend your coil back down
9. soak is with your favorite juice and see how it fires,
10. tweak your coil to either push down into the cotton bed or raise it up a bit

note: my cotton are thicker so it can hold more juice to keep up with my .6 ohm coil

I just re-wicked it with really light thin cotton and kept the stock holes as they are

great post man, thank you. so the way you have it set up here it looks like it would just vent through side, the other side looks buried?

and I'm guessing you position your airhole here:

I had trouble getting this going again yesterday because of the cotton wrap. Finding the just right amount is a PITA, also getting it to stay put is difficult for me too. Did you notice you have to leave the lower wraps free to avoid flooding? The smaller diameter coil is probably more prone to flooding. Hopefully we can figure out a foolproof and reproducible way to set this up. I finally got it going again but man the second time it took a long time!

I can't believe that I've been missing out on this for so long. I've glanced at the thread a couple of times in the past but didn't really pay that much attention to the content (too many distractions). I've been mainly a mesh/ceramic guy but it looks like i'll be making a trip here shortly to pick up some cotton. I would really like to see an atty specifically designed for this type setup. Maybe something with an angled/slanted bottom chamber with raised posts. I don't think it would be that difficult to incorporate a "leak free" juice reserve either. Would love to play around with these coils tonight but don't think i'll have much of an opportunity. It might take me another day or two but this is definitely on my to do list.

I tried my hand at this earlier today. I used twisted 30g round Kanthal. This is my setup on my IGO-W...

View attachment 257384

Vapor production is great, though I'm not getting a clear "dragon" plume out of it. I'll play around with it more. So far, so good, though.

I actually got a few minutes of free time today and got to do one of these. Tried a couple on some phoenix types (cant remember what their called) and got decent but not great results. Tried again on an IGO, put more of an angle on the coil, left just a tad more of the top of the coil exposed than I had previously done, and then set the cotton. I pulled the cotton off of some q-tips, got the batting as loose/frayed as I could then gently covered the legs of the coil, covered the OD of the coil, picked a slight path to the bottom of the coil and that was it. I wet the cotton and let it sit for a few minutes and fired it up. It looked like somebody was using a fog machine to blow smoke through one of them little coffee straws. Unbelievable how quick this thing will blow through a ml of juice.

Awesome idea! I made a ~.6ohm dual setup on my Igo-W and this is pretty obscene. One of the air holes is stock, one is 2mm (don't ask, that was the smallest drill bit I had), meaning only one coil is getting sufficient direct airflow. I can't wait to try this with my new IGO-W top cop with proper air holes!

My normal 12 and 18mg was unbearable for even a couple hits. I tried some unflavored no-nic VG just to see how it did and I cannot believe how satisfying it is. The feeling of my lungs being completely filled with vapor (aka suffocating on VG vapor) is really doing it for me, no nic involved.

IGO-W on a Bombshell Stinger w/ MNKE 26650. Pardon the untidy cotton work, the coils underneath are actually pretty nice! haha
