I check my card and bank balances a few times a week, use virtual account numbers for most of my online transactions (Someone mentioned Citi does this, Discover offers it as well).

The last fraudulent transaction I had, Citi called me within an hour of the transaction to ask me about it, denied the charge, and sent me a replacement card via FedEx.

I checked up on all mine...no evil grundings found so far.
I use strictly prepaid debit...I put on exactly how much I am going to use plus the monthly fee (if applicable) and I spend every dime within an hour after I load it up.
I have to admit though, I cross my fingers between the time I load the card and get home to go online to spend what I've allotted to it, lol.
I really do wish that the responsible parties would get with the program and give us the chipped cards, because one of these days there is gonna be a mass ripoff thats gonna make the Target deal and this 9.84 scam look like a tea party.
Sure, the conversion is going to cost money but hey, it's money now or money later.
I guess I just don't believe in the concept of 'Fix on Failure' *shrugs*

Ya, I think it would be cool, if not responsible to give specific facts like a link
to this current scare?

That's the biggest problem....there has been no official statement made about this scam. Here's the link to the Amazon conversation that I found after I got hit:

Amazon.com General Help Forum

I posted about it in the Ahlusion thread and then a lot of people started to find the same thing. If you do a lot of online shopping, especially with it being the holidays, it can be easy to overlook a small charge. But it is much easier to get this resolved now before the card is resold and used for larger purchases.

Here is the thread from 800notes.com:

http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-855-531-1095

I am waiting for them to come out and say what is going on. People need to know to look for the $9.84 charge. There have been enough people posting in this thread alone to warrant checking your accounts. I can only imagine how many people have been hit that don't post about it.

If A payment processor was compromised then it doesn't matter how you shop online. B&M charges you made are st risk too. What surprises the hell out of me is that the banks have not shut this down yet and are continuing to allow these charges to go through

I'll give this thread a Christmas day bump...I caught the 9.84 charge also, ran the google search, got a link to come back over here. Card cancelled on Christmas day oh boy!! Seems honestly from all I've read this may be a random card number hack...seems to be no common denominator like a certain place shopped(target or amazon) or card (visa or mastercard) and several different location names taking the money. Only common denominator is the 9.84 amount. Got to wonder how many people won't find they have this until after the holiday...the banks should just block this up front asap but ya know...

Makes me wonder if the banks can do say, a 'mass flagging' for that particular amount across all of their accounts.
Of course that would suck for the person who is trying to make a legitimate charge of 9.84 at the local starbucks or what have you.
At first blush, it probably isn't real practical...

I have not ever shopped at Target with my card but I shop at Amazon fairly often, at least once or twice a month.
Luckily I have a spreadsheet that has what I spent, where I spent it, on which card (in code, no actual numbers) and the date/time of the purchase.
Been using spreadsheets since April of last year.....dang things have become indispensible, lol

I feel fortunate that I keep managing to dodge these bullets. Of course doing my rebuilding and DIY juice I don't usually have an occasion to purchase vaping stuff online, though I did just buy most of my spring textbooks off of amazon late last week.

Hubby unfortunately made a purchase at target recently. Nothing fraudulent has popped up yet, but still I was annoyed. I won't shop at target. I'm still mad about the bellringer thing from years ago. I hold corporate grudges forever :glare:

It has nothing to do with "vaping" purchases.

Agreed...the other on line groups that are discussing this don't seem to have a common denominator as far as where the cards that were affected were used, and many are not Target shoppers at all. This is something different, going on for the last several days in fact.

One of the other sites where this is being discussed is Amazon, but not everyone who got hit with this used their card for an amazon purchase. They're thinking maybe a payment processor somewhere has been hacked...the 9.84 could just be checking for valid cards before a bigger amount is taken. How wonderful.
