That is such a shame, Jerry. I've heard of things like that -- usually to build highways, etc.
It's called "Eminent Domain", Sandy. The government has the right to take private property, as long as it's going to be used for the public good. The big question is, what is considered "public good"? I have heard of property being seized and then sold to big business.

Wuzz, around here, there are lots of local farms that sell their products at farmers' markets and little farm stores, so you can get milk that hasn't been homogenized. You should see if there are some around you. Different breeds of cows give milk with different butter fat content, so you might find a kind of milk that's creamier. For instance, the cows on that dairy farm were Holsteins, and their milk was leaner than the one cow used for the family's milk, a Gurnsey.

So, even back then, they would separate the cream from the milk, and then re-mix and homogenize and pasteurize it, and still have some cream left over. I remember drinking milk still warm from the cow.

I've always wanted to do that... and I always wanted to try at least once to churn my own butter.:)

Nostalgia Night in Voltville! I can't add anything to the topic of ice. Don't remember ice blocks. I guess I'm too young. :p What I DO remember are those awful metal ice cube trays with the lever that was so cold it burnt my hands. Hated those! I do recall milk in bottles but I avoided it. Never have been able to get along with milk. Anyone else make the mistake of not bringing in the milk before it froze on the front porch? :glare:

I remember those damn metal ice trays.

I don't get along with milk either, Raven. I drink soymilk instead.
As for leaving milk on the porch, no problem with that, I was a city boy, until I was 8 years old. The milk was left in the hallway.

Oh, but come to think of it, we still did have milk delivery, out here in the burbs. The milk was left in an insulated box, that was screwed to the house.
