It's one of the many New Hampshire tourist attractions, Sandy. That's probably why it's expensive. Gouge the tourists. lol

Watkins Glen is one of the many NY tourist attractions, too, but the state parks all have the same charges, I think. At least the ones in this area are consistent. Some of the state parks don't have street parking close by, so you have to pay for parking, but that's the only difference. And most people aren't as cheap as I am, and don't want to walk those extra few blocks, or maybe it just never occurred to them to find that alternative, so they pay the parking fee.

Today is finally hot enough that I turned on the air conditioning.

I went to the doctor this morning for a check-up after the pneumonia, and, as I thought it would, everything is now normal. Actually, my temperature was 2 degrees below, 96 point something or other, and I wonder if I have a normally lower than average temperature, since there have been times over the years that I felt feverish, took my temperature, and it was 98.6!

Then I tutored. I took the kids to the library today. It's Monday, so I read them a story, then had the girl write the plot, and the boy had to analyze the message of the story: Pride comes before a fall. I interpreted that for him and then had him write about how it related to the story, which was of Chanticleer, the rooster, who got so vain about the fox's flattery over his beautiful voice that, instead of running away, he stood and crowed for the fox, who caught him. But the rooster grew smart, and told the fox to taunt the people chasing him, and when he opened his mouth to do so, the rooster got away from his grip and flew to the safety of a tree. If the rooster hadn't been so taken in by the fox's flattery, he wouldn't have been caught, and if the fox hadn't listened to the rooster saying how clever he was, and how he should taunt his pursuers, he wouldn't have lost the rooster. I sort of mentally walked the boy through this analysis, but I'm hoping that soon he can come to those conclusions by himself.

We did the usual fill-in-the-blanks, and the girl had the him/her/it sheet and one about the past, present, and future tenses. She still doesn't have those details down, so I'll continue to give her sheets to do till it gets implanted in her brain. Having the kids write is really handy to see where they need work.

I tutored early today, because the kids don't have school, so I don't have to wait till they get home from school.

I won't tutor on Wednesday, since the boy and his grandmother are going to NYC to some sort of party.

I wonder who made that walk way. It is carved into the rocks. Really gorgeous.

Good morning Volties.

How you been doing out there? How's it going Terry? How about you Evie?

Awsum - 50 percent humidity would be incredibly wet but you know out here it's a dry heat. That always cracked me up in Vegas I'm thinking it is 114 degrees out there, I don't care how dry the heat is it is fricking hot,

Sitting down, facing forward.
Lizzie, around here any humidity in the summer under 60% is considered dry. Normally it's more like it is now, 76 with 83% humidity and supposed to get into the 90's later this morning. The humidity will drop a bit with the heat, but probably won't go under 70%.

I was in Albuquerque in the early 1980's. It was 114 there at noon and I sat outside, in the shade, in a three piece suit with a tie and ate lunch. I never even felt overly warm. The humidity was about 6% if I remember correctly. In the sun, it would have been a scorcher, but in the shade it was fine.

Lizzie wondered who built the Gorge Trail in Watkins Glen. It existed in some form before, but in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps improved them and built at least one of the stone bridges. The trails have to be constantly maintained, though, and every spring, extensive work is done to keep them safe. That is now accomplished by the state parks system. For more info on the history of the glen, see Index of People, Places and Adventures in, and around Watkins Glen, NY. In the old days, a lot of the trail was wooden walkways, but they were fragile, so the stone masonry improved them. They had historic photos in the gift shop at the main entrance.

Sandy, you're about to cause me to take a vacation to New York just to see that place. And few people from Florida ever take a vacation to New York lol.

it would be a relief from the summer heat, though today the high is supposed to be 91 degrees. I don't know how hot it gets in Florida in summer, but it's got to be generally warmer than here.

It is ia dry heat here although when it starts hitting 100 degrees, it is way too hot for me. Also, being in the direct sun is really hot above 90 degrees.

The shade cover really makes sitting out, even on hot days, much nicer. I think you can see the green rope in the photo with the black tubing for the mister below it. That is where the mister system is going in today! Misters add a nice bit of coolness to the area but they stain everything brown so we can't use them near the house or things we care about. I am cleverly hanging them in the open space in the middle of the tree, the trash shed and the shade cover:)

The imaginary vine is to the left behind the smoker. I hung some netting for the vine to fill in. It is healthy and has a good start on filling in that area.

Hubby's new smoker worked well for him on its trial run.

Our heat index is supposed to be around 112 today I think. Guess spring is over. I'm out mowing but taking frequent breaks. I usually don't wear a hat but being bald this year I don't want a sunburn lol. Actual temp is going to be around 94. Gotta stay hydrated for sure.

Definitely need to drink plenty of water! It will probably be 94 degrees or hotter today but it is a dry heat here:)

Do you use an air conditioner in the house, or a cooler? Coolers are much less expensive to run, and ideal for that climate.

We have an air conditioner. Hubby worked graveyard when we moved here and we thought it would be hard to have him sleep with the doors to all the rooms and a window cracked open. You gotta have airflow with the swamp cooler.

Lizzie, your project looks good! Do you think the heat from the cooker will hurt the vine?

Yes, I do think the heat from the cooker will hurt the vine but the vine was in some smoke the other day and seems to be fine.

Good morning, Voltpeeps. It's gonna be a hot one, today.

I'll bet it isn't dry heat either:(

Predicted high--------------

74 deg. Jealous yet??

So nice, the mid seventies is perfect temps.

So gonna be some major flooding around here . . . Tomorrow supposed to be the same - just worse . . . AND - For July 4th expecting it to be somewhere around 95* with a "RealFeel" of 105* . . .
summer-animated-zaazu-com.gif

Now back to "Arthur" getting reports down here that it looks like he is going up the coast towards the Northeast by Friday - So EVERYONE be careful . . .

I just hope it is over with by the time I get up there next week and there is at least some reasonable weather while I am there - I DO NOT WANT TO FACE ANOTHER "SANDY" (Really don't want to leave FL - only to get hit with a Hurricane again while I am North like last year - NOT NICE ! ! ! ) . . .
