Thanks for the comforting words, Rave. I think we should stick to stuff they respond to. There's a dragon boat festival in Ithaca on July 12, and maybe I'll take them to that, since it's part of their Chinese heritage. When I mentioned 2 other ideas as well -- the Corning Museum of Glass and the Syracuse zoo -- the girl piped up that she wanted to go to the Dragon Boat Festival most. I think she heard the word "festival" and thought it might be like Waterloo, though I think it'll be much smaller. I told them I had no idea what it was like. I've never been to it. But I said it was close, at least, and we could always go home if it was boring.

When we drive out in the country, they are very interested in farms, so someday, I'd like to take them on a tour of a farm. I just have to figure out where. There was a dairy farm that had some sort of open house that would have been nice, but I haven't seen that advertised this year. They crane their necks to see cows out in a field, so a farm with animals would be good. The boy kept asking me if the cows were wild. I said no, and he asked why they don't run away. I said there was a fence to keep them in their pasture. He asked if horses couldn't jump the fence. I said some might, but most horses, like mine, are happy where they are if there's enough grass to eat. They really have no clue about stuff like that.

Out of the 3, I would've picked the festival too. Pass on the Corning museum (speaking as the eternal 4-yr-old), and the zoo you can go to anytime. I hope it's as much fun as ours here: http://www.sfdragonboat.com/index.php/festival-site-info-55/for-families-a-kids

The main attraction in those are the races, but there's usually cultural entertainment, lots of food (most likely will have to pay for those), and things for kids to do (should be free) - at least here. I looked at the website for yours Welcome : Finger Lakes International Dragonboat Festival, but it didn't really say much. Their restaurant isn't participating?

I doubt they are participating. They probably will be doing business as usual. Yes, I had looked at the site, and it didn't say much. They had a Facebook page, too, and that showed some photos, but it also didn't say much about the festival. I have a feeling it'll be a lot smaller than the one in SF, with a lot less going on.

Good morning, Volties. Break time here.

SandySu - I think you are doing a great job of exposing the kids to different and new situations and places. Maybe they complained about the walk but they will remember climbing the stairs:)

We got the cabinets moved up a full three inches and it went very smoothly. Hubby set up two car jacks and up the cabinets went. He screwed everything back into place and I am washing all the dishes and using iron out before putting them back in. I do have to rearrange the kitchen a bit to make sure the large pots for canning have a home but I probably could do without the old heavy duty aluminum pots from Grandmas's house. I haven't used them and the handles are getting old. I'm not that fond of decorative stuff so most of that can go.

I do have to patch and paint a bit but there is no patching putty so I will have to buy some tomorrow.

If I patch tomorrow evening, I should be able to paint on Tuesday. The refrigerator arrives on Wednesday. I hope this timeline goes smoothly.

I am also taking this opportunity to finish up the last little details on the kitchen insets. I have an inset for the spices, the knives and the cutting boards. The wooden insets fit into the walls but I never got the trim on to make them look really nice. I had to buy a brad nailer and brads. I finally did that but still never quite managed to get this job done:) I also need to put a couple of stabilizing screws in and of course I don't have the right screws for that either so I will pick those up tomorrow, as well.

Hopefully, by Tuesday afternoon the kitchen will be sparkly clean and all the details will be done.

Lizzie, your sense of industry always impresses me. Yes, get rid of those old pots. If you don't use them, there's no point in having them unless for a decorative effect.

Yeah, I think those pots and pans can go.

We finished the round pen!!!!!!! It is 88 degrees out there and climbing so we finished just before we should be passing out from working in the heat!

So, the round pen is officially moved but I am not quite done yet. I have three or four shrubs to remove before the round pen will be functional. Sometime after Wednesday.

If we didn't have a sense of industry we wouldn't have a nice place to live! We certainly can't afford to hire anyone to do this stuff for us. Besides, all the workers in our area have a drinking problem or a bad back. You never know with the drinkers if they'll show up. The ones with a bad back will get the job done, eventually, on their good days.

If I were in your shoes (which prolly wouldn't fit lol) I'd put that old fridge out in the yard and run an extension cord to it just to see if it would keep the food cold. If it caught fire it wouldn't hurt anything except maybe a cord end..

No thanks, wuzz;-) The darn thing wasn't running right anyway. A bit too warm. Turn it down a bit, frozen milk. I was ready to buy a new one anyway. I'm definitely not willing to take a chance on a fire especially with the high winds and dry conditions we have here.

I saw the fridges on sale but MIL said she had a fridge so I thought I would hold off on buying a fridge. However, I saw how old her fridge was and still had the thought of that fridge I saw on sale.

I skipped calling MIL since they were moving and Hubby agreed to a new fridge easily:) That turned out fine since their old fridge died too so it wasn't worth moving to our place anyway.

Lizzie, that was a really good deal on the fridge that you got (I know, cuz I've been wanting the smaller version, which is more expensive ). Hand-me-down fridges aren't usually worth it, cuz look what happened: it died. But had it lived, you would've been eating what you saved with more electricity (fridge manufacturers are required to make them more energy-efficient every year) and convenience (new fridges have more bins and compartments to help you organize your food better).

...how's that for rationalizing your new purchase?

Now for a man's take on this: Your fridge died, your food was getting spoiled, you bought a new fridge, food is cold again.

Lizzie, if anybody deserves a new fridge it's you. You work hard for everything you get so don't deny yourself something you want and will enjoy. I know exactly why DH agreed so easily. A couple of years ago we went shopping for a new one. My wife walked straight to one of the best in the store with water and ice in the door and started checking it out. I asked her if that was the one she wanted and she said no, to expensive and we don't need it. While she was looking for something more practical I grabbed the clerk and bought it. That girl can go through some ice and it's been the only one that could keep up with her lol.

So sweet, wuzz. Very thoughtful of you.

Because of our hard mineralized water, we didn't want the ice maker or the water in the door. Plus, it is sort of hard to run water to the fridge the way our kitchen is set up.

I think I will buy Hubby ice in a bag, so much easier than keeping those ice trays filled.

Fridges without all that crap on the door are more energy-efficient. ;)

Maybe in some households. It takes a lot of energy to open the door to get ice. :D On a side by side when you open the door to get ice a huge amount of the cold air cools your tootsies which runs the freezer excessively to catch back up. When this happens every 30 minutes or so during the summer you've lost all you gained by not having it.

We've got a LOT of iron in our well. I put in an iron filter and water softener and found out we weren't really redheads.
