I read that it specifically had to be Bounce brand. I guess critters have expensive taste - they just laugh at generic.

I guess Hoosiers wasps couldn't care less. The ones I use are generic. I don't buy them for the dryer because, like Sandy, I don't use 'em. The chemicals can cause dryer fires. It's Downy for me. So, I bought the dryer sheets specifically to keep the wasps away and wasn't about to buy the more expensive original Bounce sheets. Still worked like a charm.

Good night, all. I'll try Bounce dryer sheets. I'll have to wait till I go shopping next, though, since I don't use dryer sheets. Meanwhile, I'll deodorize my slippers with foot spray and see if that works. I hate to think of another sting if that doesn't work, so I may try some other tactics, too. I'd rather not know exactly what worked if I don't get stung again. My poor left pinkie toe can't stand another one.

Meanwhile, I'll call the landlord. I think they may have a nest in my porch roof. The joy of renting: Let him eradicate the yellow jackets!

Here's another good-night photo from last Friday: one of our area's fall bounty.

Much better to let the landlord deal with the critters!

Your photo is lovely, and ... appetizing. Fortunately, I have grapes in the fridge. G'night all!

I bet you wouldn't like them. They are wine grapes. Once I plucked one and ate it, and it was incredibly bitter. They are not good for eating.

The American grapes, the ones with the juice between the skin and the jelly-like seed capsule, take a long time to ripen. The juicy part is just loaded with flavor-- the jelly-like part, not so much. We used to make grape pies, slipping the skins was part of the procedure. Rave, that grape picture would make a great jig-saw.

Just As An FYI:

Well, I made it North in one piece and without to much trouble either . . . AND - That Nor'easter - Whatever this is - It is Not what I remember a Nor'easter to be . . . A lot of rain & wind and colder - YES . . . However, Temp's are only in the low 50's when I arrived and the wind is not that bad . . . Tomorrow will be colder and still raining, but by the weekend it is supposed to be back up to about the 70's . . . So not as bad as the wheather men kept saying . . . As far as I am concern - All's GOOD . . . :thumb: :D

Good morning, Voltpeeps.

First of all, OMG I can't believe that Terry is on her way. I'm so excited for her!

SandySu - How awful to get stung a second time! How are you doing?

The trainer is supposed to come over today. I think the plan is to get the cart on the horse today. Let's hope for the best.

It is a bit cloudy out there. It looks like we have one more week of fairly warm weather and then the chill sets in. That's about right since we have a cold and windy day for Nevada Day and Halloween every year.

Good morning, folks. The yellow jackets are driving me crazy. I almost got stung again this morning. I was opening the back door, and there was one perched on the latch, just waiting for my hand. I brushed it with my thumb and pulled away quickly. Interestingly enough, though it didn't sting me, the skin on my thumb tingled. Did just touching the wasp's body cause that, or did he try to sting and missed, and some of the venom sprayed on my my thumb? I didn't know that could happen. I washed my hands right away, but the tingling persisted for a while. It's gone now.

I phoned the landlord and talked to his wife, and he'll come up and see where the wasps are nesting. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere on the roof of my little porch. It's lucky I called when I did, since next week, the landlord is going to have eye surgery. His wife explained that he has glaucoma, and they are going to insert some kind of tiny pump in his eye. I never heard of such a thing.

Meanwhile, among other household tasks, today I'm going to try to find out why my calculations and the bank's don't agree on my checking account balance. The bank thinks I have $200 more than my records say. I have to get to the bottom of it. I hate balancing my bank book!

I also have laundry and dishes to do and I plan to ride this evening.

Gotta get busy on one of those tasks. I'll leave the banking till last. I'm a math dunce, and even with a calculator, I never seem to get it right.

Ah, I see. Sounds like the wild grapes that I have that grow overhanging the creek. NOT good to eat! :p

Great minds think alike! I already snagged it for a puzzle last night.

How awesome that you were able to reach your destination and that the nor'easter wasn't too bad for you. :)

Good luck with the cart training. :)

Yellow jackets seem to go nuts in the autumn around here. I typically take my hummingbird feeders down around Oct. 15th because they get covered with the little buggers. Sure hope that your landlord can figure out where they are coming from. Generally though, the yellow jackets around here nest in the ground - not on a building.

Good luck balancing your check book. I hate dealing with math too.

Hope you get your wasp problem solved! SandySu.

One word: MicrosoftMoney [or is that two words?]. You can download for free and keep your check register in it. Changed my life on balancing the checkbook.

I'd like to not do anything today but I think I need to get the last of the potatoes pulled out of the ground and plant the garlic. I'm pretty sure that putting these two items off any longer is not a good idea.

Lizzie, you did a good job painting that shed! Do tell how the horse cart training goes.

Around here, the yellow jackets seem to like to nest in small spaces. I even found them starting to build a nest in my mailbox one year! They seem to love my porch, the area between the porch ceiling and the roof. They've been there before, other years, and the landlord got rid of them. One year when they were particularly bad, they nested inside the rails of the round pen where I had Penny boarded at the time. Every time you went to open the gate to use the round pen, they swarmed out and attacked. They also like to build nests in horse trailers if you don't use the trailer much. Then when you go to take your horse somewhere -- Surprise!

I haven't seen them nest in the ground much. There are ground bees that'll do that. They are smaller and black.

Rave, if the wild grapes taste bitter, I wonder if they'd make good wine. Sometimes, they make wine from the sweeter grapes, like Concord grapes (the kind Welch's uses for juice and jelly), but that wine is too sweet for my taste. There's a winery in the area that uses American grapes instead of ones from Europe, and their wines are sticky-sweet.

This evening, I went to see Penny. We didn't ride because the boy had lots of homework, and anyway, it started to rain right after I got home, so we probably would have been rained on. Instead, I groomed Penny pretty thoroughly, except for the mane & tail, though I did remove burdocks from her tail. Then I went to find the boy, who had spent the time cleaning the stalls, and we brought the horses in. I'm glad they didn't get rained on. It had just started to drizzle as I was pulling out of their driveway.

Not long after I got home, the landlord & his daughter arrived to get rid of the yellow jackets. He had been by earlier to assess the problem, and even he was impressed with how many there were. He told me he counted 15 just as he was standing there on my porch. It's funny. As soon as he came to my porch and started talking about exterminating the yellow jackets, they seemed to go into hiding. I haven't seen any in the house since then, and when I looked out my door, they didn't seem to be buzzing around the porch as usual. I'm sure it's a mere coincidence, a change in the weather, or something like that, but it's almost like they understood that they had taken it too far, and now they were slated to die en masse.

So.... Before I begin my arduous story of a very crappy day... Let me give you the backstory of the last few weeks.

Alternator is dead so I have been traveling around on my boat/rv battery. I learned the hard way to charge it every night, by the car going dead on the side of the road a few times. Fiance's dad sold an old truck to the garbage guy and the man picked it up on Mon. He said I'll see y'all tomorrow and give you the money for the truck. About a week or so ago the man said the truck (1987 Dodge Ram 150) would bring fiance's dad 325. Well Tues. rolls by and no garbage man. Wed. he was closed so today we rode in my car to the garbage place.

Here is where my story begins....
We are very close to our destination when, THUMP THUMPITY THUMP THUMP Flat tire!!! I had just bout those tires earlier this year and that wheel was always giving me problems(valve stem). Anyway, we pull over to the side of the road and assess our situation. The tire had three holes in it from driving it to the service station on low. *sigh*

We pulled out my jack(s), donut, tire tools and extra tire. We decided to put the rear tire on the front and put my flat donut (spare) on the back and then get the money from the truck then get my tire put on the wheel.

Well that was the plan anyway. We jacked up the car, removed the rear tire, put on the donut, lowered the car, went to jack up the front of the car, removed the flat, went to jack up the car higher to put the rear tire on it, and CREAK BUMP the car rolls back and the jack falls. We dug out a hollow to put the jack back under the car and I put on the E Brake. We got the jack in place and start to jack it up again and DAMMIT it rolls again! So I sit in the car mashing the brakes with all my might (note to self get pads replaced!) and YAY!, we get it jacked back up and the second jack in place to get it higher. As the second jack is rising Fiance's dad scoots the flat under the car to catch it incase of another rolling incident.

Fiance finally got the tire on the car so we go on our way very slowly to the garbage place. We get there and go see the garbage guy and get the money, but he only gives us 223!!!!! He ended up lying to us multiple times about it and we left, saying we won't be using his services again. That jerk had the audacity to get mad at us when he was in the wrong and caught him in it!

We went slowly down the road a ways to get the tire changed and had no mishaps.... Except leaving my spare car battery there!!!!!

We got home and went to a friends house for a ride to Advance Auto Parts and got there, paid for a new alternator, only to learn that instead of next day shipment (like i was told on the phone) it won't be in til Tues!!!!!

We got home and went to place the battery on the charger but realized it got left at the tire place. I called them really quickly and found out they still had it and asked for it to be held til tomorrow.

    Good Grief, what a day!!!!:-x:-x:-x:-x:-x:-x:-x:-x:-x:danger::-x:-x:-x:-x:-x:grr::grr::grr::grr::grr::evil::evil::evil::evil::mad::mad::mad::mad::glare:

    Apologies for my rant story!

Celtic, as you said, what a day! I hope you get the car going so it's reliable. Awsum warned you about that boat battery, but I guess you solved that problem by recharging it often. Still, a regular car battery should be in your future. As for the flats, I hope you don't have any more problems. And as for that guy who gave you less for the truck than agreed, in the future, get it in writing.
