Not sure but there may be a size limit? Thanx for posting all those beautiful photos. Tell DH next time to catch the crab from behind lol. The left coast sure looks different than the right coast. Even in Fl. the Gulf coast is totally different than the Atlantic. It won't post one of my photos, I don't know why. Anyway. Good morning.
That is a nice size watermelon! I can see why you might have picked it early, because I would look at its size and think it was ready tooWe finally got to have watermelon for dessert tonight. I think I picked it too early, it wasn't really very sweet at all, but it sure smelled like watermelon -
(The meat was actually much white than the photo, almost snow white.)
@awsum140We picked another watermelon yesterday and it's about a third bigger than the first one. I'm going to watch them more carefully and won't pick them until I see no growth for a few days. They should be ripe by then.
Lizzie, it's only a nice beach if the water temp is over 75 or 80 and I'll bet it wasn't there, LOL.
I tried the thump test before I picked it and it sounded pretty good. So much for the thump test, LOL. I will start looking for 18 year old virgins to practice on though for future reference![]()
And while you're trying to find one the whole field is going to rot.The sound should be exactly like when you slap the .... of a 18 year old redhead virgin (ok that's impossible to find) while she rides a fluorescent green unicorn.

I have my toes in the sand and I am holding my PV. I am a happy camper![]()
Behind the vine there is a small "coil" , the one that the plant uses to grab onto something. When it dries out then it's ready to be picked.
Also the underside, if it's white it's not ready yet, if it's yellow it's ready.
Also if it has small hairs on the vine they do tend to fall off when it's ripe.
Some of mine do not have a white or yellow underside, they are perfectly green all around.

How to Tell if a Watermelon is Ripe One page says it takes 80 days from the time you plant the seed but there are too many variables to use that as anything but a guideline. Here's a whole bunch of research. Google is my friend. We used to look for the signs mentioned but the "thump" test always produced the best results. Course you've got to get a few not ripe ones before you develop an ear for it. Hope this helps.
