Good morning, Volpeeps.

Raven - You aren't going to be doing a ten mile, are you? Let us know how the walk goes for you.

I am sorry to hear about 1st officer. He was a character, for sure. I know he loved his girls.

I need to pull it together. We slept late and we are supposed to be getting out of here to cut wood.

I'm sorry to hear about 1st Officer, though I didn't know him. I think he posted here recently, but not much.

Rave, it's good to hear from you, and I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well. Yes, let us know how the walk goes. Don't overdo. If you have to stop before it's completed, do it. Take care of yourself!

Yesterday, I bought door prizes for the horse club's annual meeting. I'll be reimbursed, but when I got home, I couldn't find the receipt, even though I knew exactly where I put it in my wallet yesterday. I searched everywhere. Then, this morning, I looked in my wallet, and there it was, right where I had put it! Sometimes I wonder about myself! Am I getting senile?

moanin', Volties.

Nice to see you post, Rave. Do take it easy and don't overdo that walk. We know it's important to you, but so is your own health and condition. Great news about the new job!

Sandy, I've experienced that little "phenomenon" more than once and it happens even before we get older...just more often as we get older, LOL.

Hello Voltville. Sorry to hear about First Officer awsum. Did she give any indication of what he passed from? Like an illness or an accident. Last I heard from him he was pretty active.

Good to see you post Rave. Good luck with your walk, or wobble. Great news about your son's new job. That should help a lot with their house fund.

I know I don't post often but I do stop by and speed read a lot. Hope y'all are having a bodacious weekend.

1st had been having some pretty serious health problems and the last one got him. He asked, specifically, that I not mention what, let's just say it's a killer far too often.
Didn't know about the health problems and it doesn't matter. I just mostly wondered if his bike did it. I feel bad for his family.

I just got back from tutoring. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but the boy and girl have an intense competition about who gets to go first for the lessons. No one wants to. This summer, their mom said the girl had to go first every time because then she'd have plenty of time to eat. (She eats very slowly.) But today, the grandmother took her on a long walk to the Chinese Buffet, and they ate there. Why, when the family owns a Chinese restaurant, is a mystery, but the grandmother, who's scheduled to go back to China soon, has been behaving weirdly. I think she doesn't want to go, probably because her daughter-in-law can hardly wait till she's gone.

So the grandmother said the boy should go first today, and he argued long and loud about it and threw a tantrum when I backed her up and said, "Grandma's the boss. If she says you go first, that's who goes first." He came down to the lesson, which is in a little study in their finished basement, shedding tears. He really doesn't handle not getting his way.

The interesting thing, however, in addition to all this drama was, while I was waiting downstairs for my first student, whoever it might be, and war was raging upstairs, I smelled something really foul. I sniffed around and found it was coming from the open window. Outside, in a depression made for the basement window, was a mostly decomposed dead squirrel. I pointed it out to the kids, who were fascinated, and I told them about maggots, which were quite visible on the body. The girl said, "Oh! They are baby flies! Are those 2 flies the mother and father?" They weren't at all put off by it, whereas someone older would have been grossed out. I mentioned it smelled bad, and they all agreed, but they had me open the window so they could all smell it.

I think it's cool how kids, unless they are taught death is yucky, are so interested in such stuff. I remember I was, when I was little. Kids are little scientists! Later, they may learn to shut out stuff that's supposed to be disgusting, but it won't be that I taught them that.

Good morning, Voltmaniacs.

Raven - how did your walk go? Also, have the kids made any progress on their house???? Congrats on the kid getting a new better job.

SandySu - How fun for the kids to "ride" in the balloon.

It is chilly here this morning. 40 degrees.

I suppose I ought to get out there and feed the critters. I have a lead on the mini going to a new home. I am going to drive by and see what the place looks like. My friend is going out of town for a week and then when she gets back, we are going to go look at the new place. Then, that lady will come over and meet Nevada.

I am starting to look for new pony prospects. It isn't easy to find what I am looking for and most horse sales are done in the spring and summer but it won't hurt to keep my eyes open. The propane lady is also looking for me.

Good morning, Voltmaniacs.

I have emailed someone about a cute little pony that lives here in our town. She claims he is trained to drive. We shall see. If she emails me back, I will go look at him.

Hot yesterday and pretty hot again today although overnight lows are in the forties so fall is headed our way.

We bought a Craftsman snow blower yesterday for cheap. We are hearing rumors of a snowy winter. It has the track wheels and looks almost new.

I can take a photo of the pony but I have a feeling he isn't gelded and he looks sort of small so I don't think this pony will be coming home with me. If he is gelded, I will consider seeing him. If not, I will not be bothering to go see the cute little guy.

No one in their right mind would trade an untrained ex-stallion for a well trained pony so I doubt that will happen. I am hopeful that Nevada will have a new home when the neighbor gets back from vacation. We will see.

Technically, I can have three horses here because I have the round pen available.

I really want a trained gelding pony that is a larger than Wiseguy so I need to keep that in mind when looking.

moanin', Voltinians.

Good luck with the quest for a new pony, Lizzie.

I never knew that bamboo could grow here in the Northeast until we went to an outdoor sculpture gallery in Hamilton, NJ, Grounds for Sculpture, about ten years ago. There are varieties that will grown here and actually do well. There's some growing down near the Rancocas Creek near me that someone must have planted originally. It has to be trimmed on a regular basis or it will take over that whole area so I'm sure the Township really doesn't appreciate it.

My neighbor, across the street, also has some in the front and the spreading abilities keep his neighbor busy making sure it doesn't encroach on their property. Yesterday, my neighbor came over to get watermelon and offered us some cut bamboo. He's trying to control it at the back of his property. We took a walk and had a look-see.

He's got a veritable jungle going back there. His son has been cutting it down with a chainsaw and has hardly made a dent, even though the pile of cut bamboo is about six feet high already. We grabbed four, nice, straight, ones about two inches in diameter and probably thirty feet long! It's a shame, bamboo is very versatile, but I can't figure out what to use it for around here. The ones we took are going to get de-frocked and allowed to dry. They will make good stakes for the garden.

Anybody want some bamboo? He's looking to get rid of quite a bit of it!

Awsum, I guess you know not to plant bamboo in your yard! It's really invasive and pops up from underground roots. I had that problem with the house we rented in California. Yes, I was surprised to see a bamboo forest on Long Island! So it does grow in colder climates. I remember when I was a kid, and people still hung clothes out on the line, they used bamboo poles to shore up the line in the middle so the wet clothes wouldn't drag on the ground. I think someone would cut a notch in the top to fit on the clothesline.

I tutored again today. Nothing really interesting. The girl went first, as usual, and she is nearing the end of chapt. 3 of The Jungle Books. She's still valiantly reading along, with lots of words I have to explain like terrace and tracery. I had mentioned another outing before it gets too cold and snowy, and my bank sent a leaflet with my last statement offering free admission to customers and their families on a certain day, so last time I showed her the leaflet and had her choose. She brought up the point that no one would ever think 3 small Chinese kids were my family. I explained that they could be adopted or maybe I married a Chinese man, and they ere half Chinese, and she looked doubtful.

So this time, I asked her which place she'd like to go to, and she said to leave it up to her older brother. Diplomatic, wasn't that?

Then it was his turn, and I showed him the leaflet. He right away asked which trip his sister chose. I said I wasn't going to tell him, because he would just choose something else to spite her. He didn't deny it. He chose the Cayuga Nature Center, and then I told him his sister said he should choose. I hope he felt bad being so vindictive when she is so generous, but I doubt he felt anything but satisfaction at getting his way.

I've been "reading" books to the little one, which translates as pointing out pictures and naming them, as one does with toddlers when they can't yet understand a story. He seems to like the colorful pictures more than the line drawings of Dr. Seuss books. He thought a seal was a fish, and I told him it was an animal, not a fish.

Last, I went to the new girl. She is still having trouble reading the words and tries to make up what she thinks will be the next word rather than reading what's there. We worked very hard on when to use don't and doesn't, and she really had trouble with the word don't (but not doesn't), for some reason. She also has trouble with do, thinking it's did or doe or something close like that. Yet she can read many words that are much more complex. It's a puzzle. We worked together a little over an hour, and I could see she was getting tired, so I suggested she stop. Then she looked at the clock and said, "Look at the time!" amazed that we had worked so hard for so long.

I don't like to make the lessons a specific time but rather what I see the kids can handle, and if they dawdle and fool around, it takes longer, so they must accomplish the amount of work I've planned, no matter how long it takes. The original girl is good at dawdling, and sometimes either she or her brother will ask me about things that take extra time to discuss. That doesn't mean they get to do less of the work I planned, so those deflection tactics don't work. I do discuss things, as I figure conversation is a good way to learn English, too, though. If they make a grammatical error when they ask me something, I correct them and make them say it the right way. So even if we digress, it's still educational. I prefer the free-form method to a strict schedule of doing things and quitting at an exact time. I think it works better. Sometimes, the lesson is short, as it was last time, when the boy was so upset. He could hardly read, so I let him off the hook after a paragraph. Sometimes, if they are going full steam ahead, I won't stop them just because their time is up. To me, this is a better way of learning than adhering to a strict schedule. I've explained this to the parents so they don't wonder at irregular periods of time spent tutoring their kids.

I did go look at the pony. He is a pintaloosa pony. 36 inches tall. Very leggy, nice ears that are not big and muley looking.

He is a stallion but he is very sweet. He is five years old. He let me lead him with no real problems other than not wanting to step out right away. He is a bit stubborn but not too bad.

He is very lightly built and very pretty. He is said to get along with other horses. I liked him a lot so I got my horsey friend to come over and look at him, too.

She pointed out that he has a rather narrow chest although both front legs don't "come out of one hole" as horse people describe some horses. She said Jim [her husband who passed away] said that a horse with a narrow chest will often perform well and isn't a fault that disqualifies him from being a working horse. He has a level topline. A bit of a slopey croup. [His .... angles down some].

The horse has a nice eye. Is said not to buck, rear or bite. Has had "extensive" cart training. They have had the horse for nine months and couldn't afford a cart so they have not put the horse to cart themselves. There is a fourth child on the way so they can't afford to keep him and they don't have the time to spend with him so they are finding him a new home.

The current owner talked of having a qualified farrier working on him and discussed a regular worming schedule. Sounds like he has been well cared for and the pen was well maintained.

I will have to neuter the horse and will probably want to do that pretty soon.

I did not manage to get a photo. I was too busy talking to Hubby, the current owner and getting on the phone with my friend. However, you will be seeing a photo of him when I bring him home on Sunday! I decided to buy him. The price is right and if I geld him and work with him, there is no reason I can't sell him in the future for a decent sum if it doesn't work out.
