I didn't tutor today, since all the kids wanted to go trick-treating. So I drove over the hill to a winery and got some wine. Lots of the people who visited the winery were in costume. One group all had green elf hats. Some started to go into the winery but were called back by their tour leader for a group picture. It was fun to see these adults in costume, all sort of semidrunk on wine, having fun on Halloween. When I got home, I got a few trick-or-treaters, but not many. I have lots of candy left over that Bill & I will have to eat.

Good morning, Voltnics.

I am up way too early. I hate daylight savings time.

It is raining which is great!

I did a nice flyer for the new water co-op which looked very professional. Now they want a renewal notice but they told me that they wanted a group effort. Which makes me feel like they didn't appreciate my previous effort at all.

I tried very hard to include people in the flyer process and that turned into an impossible effort. The one lady is bi-polar. The one guy cut me off as soon as I expressed my concern that I didn't know the chain of command in the group so that I could get approval on the flyer. The other lady didn't get back to me for over a week. The secretary guy did get back to me but wasn't much help.

I hate being in a group but the Well Co-op seems like a worthy effort to me. The meeting is next week and we shall see how it goes.

Sitting down, facing forward.
moanin', Voltavilliticians.

You're supposed to be in a desert, Lizzie! I get a real laugh out of the dramatic weather reporting. It's going to be hotter/colder, wetter/drier, stormier/calmer, than average and the way it's reported, complete with hand wringing, as being so extraordinary. How do we have averages, without having extremes to arrive at those averages? Jeesh! To top that off, what's a ten year trend in terms of the time the Earth has been around? A nanosecond at best.

It's election day, primaries I know, but we're going to do our civic duty. We'll be taking Bo along so he can vote, too, LOL. I'll bet there won't even be 30 voters ahead of us, and this is farm country so I'd think everyone we be up and out early. Maybe not with the time change though.

It was 37 when I got up at 6AM, but it's already up to 60 and supposed to top out in the low 70's this afternoon. The whole week will be like that so we're getting a reprieve from the beginning of colder weather. This time change stinks! It's dark at 5PM. Way too early.

We only have elections every other year and tis is an off year so we don't vote this year.

Above freezing at 37 degrees but only going to 48 for the high.

My neighbor is coming over and I think we will work on the horse play area. I want to set up a car wash, some cavaletti poles and a narrow trail along with the step on platform which is an old table top. I need to buy some materials like flags or some such for the scary factor.

I would also like to do an area of old hoses the horse has to walk through and the hoses will touch his feet and legs. I saw that on line.

It looks like it is too windy to play with the little horses.

Somebody must have really slept in.

Since it was such a nice day I spent it outside and got the first crop of leaves harvested off the front lawn, or what passes for a front lawn. Only about a cubic yard, mulched by the mower. Tomorrow I have the backyard and another cubic yard or more.

Try getting them to walk through one of those firm plastic wading pools. That was set up in an obstacle course where I boarded Penny, and she hated doing that. They put a bit of sand in the bottom of the pool to stabilize it. Another thing Penny wouldn't do was to stick a foot into the center of a tire. And she hated anything that dangled down from overhead that she had to walk under that would tickle her head. She was really good about a lot of scary stuff, but these particular things seemed more scary to her than the rest.

I've heard about putting in those strips of plastic that keep flies out of an open barn doorway being used to get horses used to stuff they have to walk through. Maybe you could install some of that in the door to their run-in shed?

When I boarded Penny at Deb's, there were days where we rode our horses through all sorts of scary obstacles. Penny's problems were going under something that brushed her head. She also was very reluctant to walk through a firm plastic wading pool weighed down with a bit of sand in the bottom. She didn't want to step into the circle of an old car tire at all.

I wonder what you mean by "car wash." Maybe the plastic strips that go in barn doorways to keep out flies? You could install these in your run-in shed doorways and let the horses get used to them on their own. See FARM SHOW - Can You Use A Strip Door?

It might also provide relief against winter weather and summer flies.

I'd like to see what you devise. Photos, please? I'd like to see the horses going through the obstacle in the pictures if that's possible.

Now good morning??

That's more like it, Tritium.

It snowed a bit last night. Wow, our first snow of the year and it is only Nov 4.

The new horse course is set up. I'll take some photos, SandySu. I need to add some other stuff like ribbons for the carwash. The carwash is a tall crossbar with fringe hanging down so the horse has to go through scary stuff that touches them.

Pony Baloney didn't have much of a problem with obstacles. He wanted to check out the string that was hanging down from the cross bar.

Pony does want to grab grass or tree leaves when he sees them. Bad Pony!

We didn't try it with Wiseguy who was all wound up.

We had already taken Wiseguy to the round pen. Wiseguy was bucking and running in the round pen. He is so cute.

Then, after an hour, Crystal went in to catch him and he wouldn't be caught. Wiseguy was running and running. I walked over once I realized there was an issue. I got Wiseguy to stop after a few tries and then walked up to him. He was trembling. I rubbed him a bit and then got the lead on him. Once he calmed down, I walked him to his pen to be with his buddy, Pony.

Crystal said maybe Wiseguy was cold and I told her I didn't think so. I thought he was upset. I told her that was fine. It just means that other people have to catch Wiseguy and lead him more often. I gave her a few tips on horse catching. Like, don't seem aggressive, turn more sideways, back off on the pressure especially if he stops. You are on horsey time so don't worry about how long it takes.

My first client today is taking her dog to the vet so I don't know if I am cleaning or not. Definitely would make me run late for client number two if I get there late. If she is running too far behind, I may have to reschedule for Friday.

I have to agree with Lizzie about Liscab, he seemed like such a fun guy. My condolences to his family, and to all that called him friend.

I am having a hard time right now, it's not as devastating as losing a friend, but in a way, it is to me. A new (less than a year) neighbor that moved into a home on a lot that butts up to part of our parcel decided he needed some oak firewood and took it upon himself to butcher an ancient tree that stands on the corner of our property, INSIDE the property line. I cannot reach even half way around the trunk with my arms extended as far as they go. It has to be 250-300 years old, and I doubt it will survive the massacre. Mr Q and I were driving up the road yesterday and saw that a limb that grew over the road was gone, then saw several more cut limbs. Parts of the tree were destined to be dead fall, but it was not threatening the road, it would have fallen on our property. In all, he cut 7 huge limbs off, all the way around the trunk, along with a couple of smaller trees that are now stumps near the oak. If only he had asked us, we would have been happy to show him several trees that need to be cut and cleared out of here, free firewood.

We asked up and down the street, someone saw it being cut. We knocked on his door he was not ashamed to admit he cut it...and he said he did us a favor!! Then he said he only cut dead wood, which was an outright lie, you can smell and see the fresh cut wood. Dead limbs just aren't covered with bright orange and yellow leaves! Plus, he had already chopped, split and stacked quite a bit behind his garage, which we can see from our treeline. We were astounded when he asked, Do you want some of the wood? Mr Q said, This is my wood, I want ALL of it! I have to admit, I lost it on him, I couldn't help myself, I stood in that man's driveway just yelling at him. When he saw how upset we were, he said a dead branch was threatening a pine tree on his property, he had to cut it. Again, I wanted to scream, the pine tree is ours too. Limbs were cut from every side of the tree.

I went to get my camera and called the township (useless) and the state police (pretty much useless as well). An officer came out, took a look, didn't have much to say except he would go talk to him and let me know, in the meantime try to calm down. The officer called to tell me there was no answer when he knocked on the door. He was supposed to go back and try again today, but he didn't update me, so I have no idea. But the bozo did take 3 truckloads of wood down the street and hid it behind another guy's house. I mean, he did it right in front of us! He took his sign off the roadside, firewood for sale, and his wood rack is gone. He is hiding the evidence I suppose, since the police came out, but I took a few more pictures. It's a strong word, but I really hate this guy. Seriously. This was the first conversation I had with the man, and I will never have another. What the hell is wrong with people?

We have a tree service coming tomorrow morning to get an quote on getting the wood away from the edge of the property, he isn't getting another sliver of it if I can help it. We tried to do some clean up, in the rain, but these limbs are like trees in themselves, just massive. We heard him laughing out there, ugh. I would rather let it all rot where we can see it than to leave it there for him to pick at. I don't even care that he trespassed on our property, its just the destruction of this beautiful old oak, it just can't be fixed with, Oh, I'm sorry. *cry*

Thanks for letting me vent, I know it's a rant, I needed to get it out, even if it's all out of order and makes no sense. Mr Q is much more even tempered, he doesn't know what to do with me, and I don't know what to do with myself!
I am so sorry Q!!!! {{{{hugs}}}} I hate, hate, hate senseless destruction of nature and I really hate when someone else does it on your property.
