I learned a new Chinese word today: B.J. It means "shut your mouth." We have a local store called BJ's, and when I learned the word from the kids, I said I wondered if the owners of the store know what their name means in Chinese -- then said, "Probably not." So the kids and I joked around about how if you shopped at BJ's, you had to be utterly silent, etc.
This was all while giving them a ride from their house to the restaurant. I find car rides are a really good time to chat with kids about all sorts of stuff. It gives them more practice with English, and the talks are more informal, usually in answer to questions they ask or things they say. Grandpa was in the car with us, but his presence didn't silence them as much as usual when a grandparent rides with us. I think sometimes they don't want to speak English when Grandma is in the car because she can't understand what we're saying, and it's impolite. But for some reason, Grandpa didn't seem to inhibit them as much.
