Yeah!!! Moving into cooperative mode worked. Good work.

The kids I tutor aren't really cooperative. The boy likes to flaunt his superior knowledge, which can be used to help the girl. The girl is working hard to catch up to her brother. Sometimes, she is more perceptive than he is; for instance, he didn't remember, nor could he find, the reference to the beaver's tail being like a paddle. The girl found it but misunderstood the word. I worry about the boy's comprehension. I think maybe he has a slight learning disability. He has improved, so he's not hopeless, but he doesn't remember a lot of what he reads. It shocked me the other day when he saw a movie in school and couldn't remember anything about it. He has trouble putting his thoughts into order and writing them down. He comprehends conversation a lot better than even easy written material.

Another thing I can't understand is how resistant both kids are to answering things out of order. They want to struggle with a question rather than skip it and do the easy ones first, then go back and do the hard ones, when at least the easy choices are eliminated. Yesterday, I tried to explain to the boy how it's less work to do it that way, and he always likes to take the easy way out, so I thought he could relate to that. For a while, he was answering things out of order when I prompted him, but now he's gone back to insisting that he do them in order.

I want them to learn this skill since it'll make them score higher in timed tests. They will at least get the answers they know instead of spending all their time puzzling over question #2. There's no reason to do test questions in order. Why do they insist so strongly on doing it that way? Is it just human nature to do things in order?

I was thinking about this for a bug veil. You put over your own hat. There are a few options with camo hat, as well.

So, I finally decided to go to the doctor to see if there was anything that would help. Basically, I just need to take Benadryl. She gave me a scrip for prednisone for just in case I needed it but she said that I shouldn't use it if I don't need it since predisone is good stuff but has side effects.

She also gave me a scrip for Flonase [generic] that she thinks will help with my other allergies. I get very itchy eyes and sometimes it looks like I am crying. Also, the inside of my ears itch [I mean the ear canal inside my head]. Drives me a little bonkers. I know I am totally allergic to cats. Probably some of the plants around here, too.

Of course, once I called the doctor office and got an appointment, the swelling reached its apex and started going down. She was a very nice doctor and did not treat me like a nut for coming ineven though the swelling was not huge by the time I got there. It is still swollen today but it does seem to be getting a lot better.

Just keep on emphasizing cooperative learning. If he does have a learning problem, and is using his advantage of age to discharge feelings of inferiority, giving him plenty of opportunities to help his sister in a controlled situation could really help him too. Cross-age peer tutoring literature emphasizes those benefits to the helper. Documented!!

Lizzie, a lot of those nets have a ring around the bottom, to make sure your chin is also protected. I am not sure it would work with your big brim sunhat, but that would make a nice combination. You could always return it if it doesn't work. Don't you have a sewing machine? As self-sufficient as you are, it wouldn't be any major difficulty to make one. I would do it with extensions on the front and back, to be tied or with elastic at the underarms, to protect the back of your neck and chest better. Especially good in deep summer.

I do have a sewing machine although I think Hubby might need to give it a tune-up. I'll put that on his honey-do list.

When I was growing up in the suburban Detroit area, we drank pop and ate suckers. We played on teeter totters and ate dinner, which had no distinguishable difference from supper, same thing. If we fell in the crick (creek) on the way home, we had to put our tenna shoes (tennis shoes-gym shoes) in the basement to dry.

Glad the shot got rid of your pain Rave, hope it lasts a long, long time.

Lizzie, I read 'somewhere' that when you have that itchy feeling inside your ears, it can be due to a problem with yeast. I don't know if it's true or not, but could be worth looking into. Unless it's from the gnats, ugh, they bother me too. Something to look forward to, they are not out and about here yet. I think it was Rave that told me to try lavender oil to repel them, and it worked pretty well for me last year.

I guess it depends on what they injected, but with horses, it's not masking the symptoms, since they inject hyaluronic acid into the joint. HA is something in joints naturally that lubricates them, and if the joints dry out and need more, injecting it is a way to add more. The only other way to maybe add stuff the joints need is from neutraceuticals like the glucosamine and chondroitin you're taking. There are some other supplements that are supposed to help, too, if you want to hit it with both barrels. I think ASU is the latest. That's something in avocadoes. MSM is another popular joint supplement. I heard something about silica, too. Yucca and perna mussel are 2 others, but I think they aren't very effective. This is stuff they give horses, but I'm pretty sure it works the same in humans. Two popular joint injections are Cosequin and Legend (I think it's called). You could see what these consist of and compare it to whatever your doctor shot into your joint. I only know about this from the horse standpoint, but it's well-discussed and documented and I've read a lot about it. It's mainly for arthritis. That can form when a horse overuses a certain joint. Dressage horses often have trouble with their hocks and get injections there. That's because they have to bend their hocks a lot to shift their weight back to the rear and lift the front end more than many other horses do. Most horses carry more weight on their front end, which is fine for a wild horse, but it stresses the front legs when you add the weight of a rider. That's why you want to shift some weight to the rear. That can stress the hocks, though, after doing it for many years. Probably too much info, right?

I was injected with cortisone, which is basically a long term anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. As you already know, I've now added glucosame/chondroitine, calcium citrate, and additional D3 to my regimen. All can be beneficial for regenerating cartilage and increasing bone mass. Those are the problems that I'm having - not arthritis. I don't think my issues have anything to do with overuse either, but I don't know that for sure. I've made a note of all of the supplements that you've referred to; but I don't want to add any additional supplements for now. How would I be able to tell what's actually helping? Thanks for all of the info!

Okay! Whew! I'm glad that you're okay. When your face puffs up from an allergy then it's serious in my book. I'm glad that you went to the doctor and that you're feeling a lot better now. :)

****************

I've been getting socked by storm after storm after storm since yesterday. The forecast is that there will be no let up until some time on Friday. Tonight there is a high probability of tornadic activity in much of the Midwest including my neck of the woods. Be safe out there for all of you in the danger zone. My creek is already flooded and this mess has just begun. Kinda cool to watch it though.

Yesterday I got a flat of fruit trees and those mondo grapes planted. I also planted three more flats of wildflowers and some domestic flowers too just because they were given to me as a gift. Of the stuff that I planted a few days ago, I already have sunflowers, black-eyed susans, and hollyhocks sprouting. Dunno why, but it's so exciting!

Here's a gift to make y'all laugh. Even those of you that don't like cats will probably appreciate the humor in this one. I just about burst a seam laughing:

Q, Zero, thanks for the tips on lavender oil [which would smell a lot better than DEET:)] and the itching ear lotion. Yeah, you are not supposed to use Q-tips so then I just rub the outside of my ears trying to get rid of the itch...then I try to think it away. That probably doesn't really work but after a few hours it seems to quit.

Hope everything else is going well, too, Wuzz.

It's 72 here today and was 68 yesterday. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy and in the 60's. Spring is almost here, too.

Thanx Awsum. It's getting a little better...slooowly. Next Thurs is the last chemo for a while.

Wherever "on your six" is, it sure ain't Wisconsin. Ice pellets tonight, snow tomorrow.

Lol. I didn't even notice that wuzz still up there. It's Beautiful East Central Florida.
