Good morning, Volties.

If it doesn't have caffeine, it is pointless to drink it:)

Thanks guys on the compliments on our new set up for the horses. We are going to put plywood on the back side later this year. We are kind of busy right now doing other things.

I like the way the pen went together. Very easy for two people. I like it so much I am considering having him make me something similar for our back yard. A shed with no rails except at the very top and very bottom with the metal roof. It would be about 8 feet by twenty feet long and sit up against the wind fence next to the breezeway. Since it is portable, the county couldn't make us get a permit to put it up, we could have it up in one day and it would last forever. We could put the BBQ under it and some chairs out there and enjoy our back yard in some shade!

Good morning, Wuzz. We are having one of our beautiful sunrises this morning.

It's going to be almost 80 degrees today. Wow! That is warm.

The trainer is coming today. I also need to get some water tubes set up in the garden for the onions, garlic and potatoes I will be planting later this week.

Good morning.

Rave, that eagle is spectacular. I hope he stays around so you can get more photos of him. I once saw one in the Finger Lakes National Park eating road kill, so yes, they do eat a variety of things.

Lizzie, the new pen is really nice. I'm sure the horses enjoy it. And I'm glad they're finally making peace with each other.

Terry, ant traps work really well, too. I've used them. I've occasionally had a problem with big black ants when the peony in the yard blooms. Some years seem worse than others. Good luck getting rid of your ants. They can be really yukky!

I've heard that peonies need black ants for some reason.

Yesterday was a busy day for me.

I went to lunch at Moe's, then to the dentist, then tutoring, then grocery shopping.

I plan to give the kids Easter baskets, so while I was at the grocery store, I got that stuff. I'm even going to dye eggs for them. I want to do it today, but I'll wait till closer to when I will assemble the baskets. I'll see the kids on the 19th, the day before Easter, so they'll get the baskets then. They love candy, and their consumption of candy is limited by their mom, so I bet they'll enjoy the baskets. I know they are allowed candy, since they had it at Halloween and Valentine's Day.

Today is cold and forbidding, or I'd go see Penny. It's about 40 degrees, gray, and windy, with a damp cold. Last night, we had our first thunderstorm of the year, so spring is here, I guess, though today feels more like early winter.

Tutoring report.

I have several things I researched on the Internet and printed out for the kids to read, based on things they asked about, and today, the boy chose to read about the comparative size of Earth and Sun and the distance they are apart, which changes. And I added an item I didn't know that I thought was interesting. The Earth and Sun are closest during winter in the Northern Hemisphere! How can that be? I learned that it's because the tilt of the axis leans the Northern Hemisphere away from the sun in winter, and that influence is stronger than the fact that they are a little closer than in summer.

After that reading, he filled in the blanks on a worksheet I made up of the words from last lesson. It wasn't long, and he did it fairly willingly. Still, lately, the kids are in a more itchy mood than usual. It seems to be an ebb and flow that I can't figure out. He had worked cooperatively, so I stopped there, and he ended with a Mad Libs, which he wanted. I had wondered why the kids had stopped requesting them. Also, I had a few word searches that I made 2 copies of, and they had a contest again to see who could finish first, and the boy won. This is his 2nd win in a row. I hope the girl doesn't get discouraged and decide she doesn't like word searches. Of course, the boy is older and more experienced with the words, so it's easier for him, but the girl is more focused, which evens the contest -- I thought. Now I'm not so sure.

When it was the girl's turn, we read the 2 books from school, then did a fill-in-the-blanks of words from last time. She also, as I said above, participated in the Mad Libs and word search.

There are a few stubborn spots. For instance, though I've told them over and over, they still forget to capitalize a word if it begins a sentence. The boy just did it this last time without me reminding him. Well, I reminded him with the first one, but then he remembered with the 2nd one. The girl still needs to be told every time. I wait to see if they'll do it, then correct them if they don't. When the boy remembered it the 2nd time, I made a big fuss about it. I praised him profusely. He used to remain stiff and impassive when I praised him, but this time, I think I detected a slight warming when he got praised. I'm glad of that, because kids will work hard to get praise, but not if they don't care whether they're praised or not.

Another stubborn spot is that they both are still confused about parts of speech, though we've been doing Mad Libs for a long time now. With the boy, I'll ask for an adjective, and he'll give me a noun. He does have a couple of stock adjectives lined up that he can just come out with, things like "stupid" and "dumb," but if he uses them up, he's at a loss. The girl is totally confused, even when she's reminded. For instance, I'll ask for a noun, tell her it's the name of a thing, and she'll say "swimming." I say, "No, that's a verb. Name something in the room that you see." Then maybe she'll get it. I guess that's a really difficult concept, differentiating the uses of words.

Anyway, since it was a good day, by the time we finished, it was 15 minutes overtime, and no one had asked when the lesson would end (i.e., the torture would be over). I call that a success.

BTW, some months ago, the boy asked me to teach him bad words. I refused. Yesterday, he used one and caught himself! I had to chuckle inwardly. The word was a synonym for excrement that begins with s. He looked very guilty. I guess he's learning bad words. But I told him he couldn't use them for Mad Libs. I did tell him, though, that the word he used was a noun.

No, I didn't. I decided to drop the subject pretty quickly and move on. He used it as a noun, and that's as far as I wanted to go.
