Wasp update: Today, there seemed to be less yellow jackets around, though I did catch & kill 6 in the house, buzzing against windows. This evening, the landlord & his son came, drilled a hole in the bedroom wall, and squirted more poison in it, sealing the hole off quickly with duct tape. I was hoping that no maddened yellow jackets would escape into the house, and it seems they didn't. Tomorrow, when the sun comes out, we'll see what the population looks like. Another worry I had was that the poison would back up and get into the house, but I haven't smelled anything weird, so I think they contained it all quickly enough. Please send vibes that the problem is over.
Today, after catching 6 wasps buzzing at the windows and periodically checking, which found them, I went to the dentist (just a checkup and teeth cleaning) and then to tutoring. The little girl is getting quite an attitude, and again, she didn't do her homework. I'm dangling a trip to the zoo as a reward, and I'll have to check with their mom, but maybe the boy will get to go, and we'll leave the girl behind. I think the threat of that would motivate her again.
She used to be the good student, and the boy had the attitude problem. I don't know why it switched, but I'm glad the boy is getting better. Looking back, I think that the boy developed problems when he was at about the stage of learning his sister is now at. Maybe there's a hump there, when things get a little harder, and if he overcame it, she probably will, too. I'll just have to be patient but firm meanwhile.
One thing I found fun today was that I had the boy read a poem with the rhythm of it. He has a rather flat delivery when reading aloud, and this may help. Meanwhile, it's an introduction to the various rhythms poetry can have. He was reluctant to try, so we read the poem together several times with me accentuating the rhythm, and then he read it solo with hesitant but detectable rhythm. He is really starting to come together! I think he finds it satisfying to be the good student for a change!
