Good afternoon. Weather report:

We have 2" of snow now, 18 degrees with 18 mph winds, chill factor 4 degrees. Looks like a good day to stay indoors.

I'm not use to this low indoor humidity. 23% Ugh! I bought a room humidifier but it's not helping & it's cooling the living room so furnace has been coming on more. I need a bigger one & one that doesn't blow cold air. Any recommendations?

When I heated with a wood stove I had one I picked up at an "antique" store, actually used furniture an assorted junk store, that did the whole house. It was a Sears and had a wheel inside about 30" in diameter with a foam belt on it that slowly rotated through a water bath. It did have a fan, but that was variable speed and could be lowered way down to prevent drafts. It managed to keep the house around 50% humidity without any problems. I don't know if there's anything like it out there now but at least it's a starting point.

Geothermal pump. :)
Major job, but it would keep your house comfortably within 40-70ºF all year around with minimal HVAC, and it won't dry out your air. I'm not a good candidate for it because of all the earthquakes we get out here, but I'd love to have it. The biggest cost of it is to drill a hole deep enough into the ground to run the pipes. Not a cheap Amazon purchase, but in the long run, it could make your house a lot more comfortable and enjoyable. Plus it's green.

East coast weather report - We got up to a high of 34 and it's dropping again, down to 30 now and it was 26 when I got up this morning. The wind has been howling all day so there is a significant wind chill as well.

I'm feeling like I've got a cold and Mrs. Awsum just called to tell me the big farmers market in Columbus, just north of us, is on fire. With the wind like it is I'm betting a total loss. That also complicates our Thanksgiving since I ordered rotisserie turkeys for Thanksgiving from the Amish butcher that's located, was located, there.

I just checked the local TV station and it looks like it was a set of out buildings, away from the main building. Maybe Thanksgiving will work out, I hope.

Unfortunately, their address is the farmers market, LOL. From what I've seen on local news it was the other end of the main building. The place is an "L" shape with the long end, where the butcher shop is at the very end, and a shorter end. Overall, the long end is probably about 300' long and the shorter end is/was about 150 feet. It is a very popular place with buses coming in from as far away as upstate NY and Connecticut on Saturdays.

Remember that low humidity in the winter is sign of a leaky house. My humidity here is 70%, and I have that styro insulation on my windows. Snug. You don't have neighbors to impress, and given the heating savings it is worth it for reducing heating costs and drafts.

0mg 70%? Isn't that a bit much? I mean your bones will rattle like castanets
I'm at 40-50% i think.
Yeah, I think I will have to put a garbage-bag sleeve back on my shower-head. Sometimes when I have been away for a few hours I get a whiff of mildew when I get back home.

Oh man - that's a shame about the fire. Hope that you'll be able to get your turkeys for Thanksgiving. Sure hope that you feel better too. ill.gif

Howdy citizens. Too much to back read so just a few pages. Winter has arrived early here in Paradise. Darn near record cold. It's usually January before we get this. Terry, put the humidifier right in front of the air intake for the hvac. Moist air holds heat better.

Hiya Wuzz! Winter is here way too early as well. It was 8 degrees when I got up this morning. It's a balmy 18 degrees now. coldoutside.gif On The Weather Channel last night, they were saying that an unprecedented 49 out of 50 states were at the freezing point or lower. That's just nuts for November!

Terry - pans of water in front of the registers and maybe even a big un' in front of the fireplace? I still think that you should fill that garden tub and let it sit full of water. The water in front of the HVAC intake sounds like a great idea too. Just sayin'.

We've got cold weather here, too. I think the high today was 29 degrees F. I went to see Penny and put her warmer blanket on her. I take everything into the pasture so I don't have to deal with Jasmine while trying to get Penny out of the pasture. It's inconvenient, but I have a feeling Jasmine would make life difficult if I tried to take Penny away, and I just don't want to deal with it.

So I went out there bag & baggage, with my grooming tote and her warmer blanket and the bib she wears under the blankets to keep them from rubbing. With all that, I forgot to get Penny's halter & lead where it hangs near the gate. So I left the stuff in the field and went back for the halter & lead. I did remove Penny's lighter blanket first and added it to the pile.

Jasmine is such a monkey! While I was walking across the field, she raided my grooming tote, meanwhile stepping on Penny's fresh blanket and getting it muddy before it was even worn. Jasmine had every single item out of the tote and scattered in the grass. I had a plastic bag of carrots in there, and she didn't try to get them. I was amazed. She is a horse that needs a toy! I was thinking of taking something to the pasture she could play with, but I bet she'd ignore it in favor of what I don't want her playing with.

Emptying the tote reminded me to take home stuff that'll freeze and isn't necessary now that it's cold -- like fly spray. So in a way, Jasmine helped me, though I think I could have figured it out on my own.

Where the hell is the HVAC intake?

I have the tub full of water & water simmering on the stove. Humidity is at a whopping 28% right now. :(

I have double pain windows throughout but need an insulated curtin for the slider. I only feel a draft from the sliding door.

Sorry to hear about the fire awsum. :(

Still no internet for awhile. This is really crimping my style.
