Aw, nice to be missed! Thanks! :)

Just dropping by to say HI!

I'm not quite back yet. Still computerless - decided to order parts instead of getting another used one, but they're taking FOREVER to get here! :grr:
But broke down and came to the library for access today, cuz I missed you guys too! I'll try to stop by again soon.

Oh, on cheap tablets (I know, I'm waaay behind), if your access is wifi, then they're great. But if your access is through cell phone provider, not many of the cheap cheap ones have 4G/LTE, so your connection would be hella slow. :2c:

Let's see...what else did you guys talk about...

Nothing nearly as important as hearing from you. Sure a sight for sore eyes. Glad you're ok.

Yay,Cindycated has found her way back to us. Hope you get your parts quickly.

Awsum, you got lucky on your shopping trip.

SandySu, you certainly give tutoring your best

I actually like the WiFi tablet and wouldn't want to have it tied my phone service. Hubby has gone over his allotment several times and it costs us extra.

WiFi is free. I got him his own tablet so he won't have to use his phone G's while he is at home. I figured it would help pay for itself.

Cool Awsum! What did you got her?

I just learned how to store a long integer on 8 bit register arrays on eeprom memories (splitting it into pieces) and then retrieving it and converting it back to the long integer. Tried it and it worked.
Downside i had to take a painkiller, head overloaded.

Everything but the painkiller is Greek to me, Trit. :)

Whew! We really worried about you, given the rainy weather and flooding in SF! Could you give someone else a way to contact you? We're doing that so if one of us goes missing, someone else can check to be sure they're OK.

I tutored again today.

The boy, as usual these days, is doing well, but the girl didn't finish her homework -- again. Granted, there isn't much time when one lesson is on Sunday and the next one is on Monday, but I tutored Sunday morning, so she had all afternoon to do it. I asked her why she didn't, and she said it got late.

I think the stones in the jar aren't the incentive that the lollipops were. The boy doesn't even remind me to put his into the jar. I think he's doing well now because he has matured and also because he can finally surpass his sister at something academic. The things I especially praised him on today were his diction, which has really improved, and his handwriting, which is now totally legible, instead of me having to guess what he wrote.

As for diction, both kids have problems saying "s" at the end of a word. I asked them if Chinese didn't distinguish between plural and singular, wondering if that's why, but no, it does, they tell me. I guess they don't hear the English words precisely, and a reasonable facsimile has worked for them, so they just don't pronounce things as precisely as I'd like. I think the boy is beginning to understand how pronouncing things right will make it easier for him to make the correct grammatical choices and speak correctly. I told them a while ago that my hopes are that they can speak English as well as an American, with no accent, and Chinese the same. I think the boy is taking this to heart.

The girl is still too young or not as advanced as the boy, so she is having less success, but she is now where the boy was when I started tutoring him a year and a half ago, so she is actually way ahead of him, since he's in 4th grade and she's in 2nd grade. Today, she caught on right away to adding an "e" to a short-vowel word like "sit" which makes it another long-vowel word like "site." She seemed really excited about learning this!

One problem the girl has is learning how a word ending in "ed" is pronounced. Like there's "pit" which becomes "pitted" where you pronounce the "ed" separately, and then there's "laugh" that becomes "laughed," where it's all together, one syllable. I've been looking for a rule to this -- I just know how to pronounce them -- and I found sites that stated there were 3 different pronunciations, where the "ed" is pronounced "t." I just thought we were sloppy about pronouncing it as "d." So I'm not sure, myself, which are the "d" and the "t" ones. What is "laughed,"for instance? I think it must be one of those under the "t" heading.

Verbs are the hardest thing. And I've only dealt with the simple past, present, and future till just recently I started the boy on the present continuous, where you use a helping verb with "ing": "I am going" instead of "I go."

Aargh! Grammar was never my strong point. I just learned to speak grammatically and did what sounded right, so I got the answers right enough to get good marks in English. Now I really have to learn the nuts and bolts to teach it.

Hiya MegaBee!!! It's been forever since we've seen you, but it's good to have you back in your new incarnation. :)

*******

Been kinda busy here. My BF is off work for Christmas and is pretty much underfoot all the time while I'm trying to get things ready for Christmas. The same is probably going on with Terry. I'm still trying to get baking done and only have a couple of last minute added treats for Christmas gifts that I have yet to pick up. I'll do that today. I haven't been able to finish my BF's morel salt and pepper shakers. The basic forms are done, but I still need to drill them out, add the bottoms for the stoppers, put on a bit of paint and glaze them. Still dunno if these things are gonna be worth a spit, but I'm .... tenacious.

BF is heading out the door to pick up several tons of stone for my driveway. My current gravel has sorta disappeared. This is especially so at the end of my driveway where the sink holes are taking over the valley on the eastern side. I have a line of mini sink holes in the driveway that I have to keep filling in. One of these days I may be driving in and my little Jeepers may just fall in and disappear. 8-o

Hi Dyanne and welcome back to ECF, vaping and Volt!

I answered you over on the "Ask" thread. I'm one of those that have gone on to fog machines but I still use 78mm auto batteries on and off all day when my hands are busy. Nothing can beat them for convenience, reliability and a reasonably good vape. Not an expert, by any means

Engineering Methods for Detecting Sinkholes

Soil borings or other direct testing - Borings can be reduced by reconnaissance scannings using the following methods:
Electromagnetics (EM) and DC Resistivity: detect variations in subsurface electrical properties related to anomalously thick or wet soils (electrical conductivity highs similar to our use of moisture meters in homes), or voids in the electrically conductive clay soil mantle (electrical conductivity lows)
Spontaneous Potential (SP): detects naturally-occurring minute electrical currents or potentials commonly associated with concentrated vertical water infiltration (Streaming potentials)
Micro-gravity: detects minute variation in gravity (subsurface voids create missing mass and lower gravity)
Seismic Refraction: profiles the top-of-rock which may display conical depressions of a type associated with subsidence sinks or deep gouges or cutters which represent sinkhole-prone lineaments.
Ground-penetrating radar [12]
Detection & Warning Signs of Imminent Sinkhole Collapse - Visual & Other Clues You don't have to wait until it happens.

There are two problems:

#1 I cannot afford for a professional to come out to determine the extent of the sinkhole problem.
#2 Even if I could afford it, there's not a darned thing I can do about it. My driveway is the only access that I have to my property. There is absolutely no other road frontage that doesn't involve driving over a cliff. I'm cornered. If the worst happens, I reckon it'll be time to build a bridge. Sure hope that doesn't happen cuz I can't afford that either. :(

Rave, you need an LAV (lighter than air vehicle).

Thinking about it, or at least what I call thinking, maybe the sink holes are appearing at a faster than "natural" rate due to vehicular traffic. Since that's the only way in or out, how about, rather than a full bridge, just putting 6x6 timbers across the driveway in the area where the problem is occurring? I know that isn't cheap either, but a heck of a lot less than a bridge or constantly filling with more stone. Filling is kind of like trying to fill in the ocean.

Good morning Volties! I have been trying to keep up at odd hours but just can't think of a thing to say. Glad to see you're ok and back in one piece Cindy, we missed you! I think I remember you Dyanne, as MegaBee, that was probably right around the time I joined? Welcome back! If Awsum is guiding you back in, you will be fine! ;)

Awsum, there is still time to hit the coops for a little vape giftie for Mrs. Awsum, late, but worth the wait! Did you see the cute little mini isticks?

I have been baking and trying to get ready for the bruisers to rip through my house, lol. I still have to make one last trip to the grocery store for a few things I forgot....other than that, I am ready for Santa! Yay!

This is a good time for me to thank you all, I know I don't contribute much around here, but I sure consider each and every one of you my friends. I enjoy reading all the antics and experiences, benefit from the shared advice, and am constantly impressed by the talents you all have. And the photos, what would life be like without photos? Thanks gang! :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas!

thank you everyone! If Only I could remember Megabee pass word! but either way I have been away from E-cigs for ages and started again on a kit that is not very satisfying, I totally fell off the wagon when everything happened at once my batteries were failing all at once, my juices (due to taste I am guessing) were not very satisfying and I lost 2 family members within a week of each other, it all got too much and it was easier to pick up a packet of smokes then wait for more experiments to come from USA ( I live in australia) I regretted picking up the smokes again from the start but somehow was too overcome with everything else talked myself into the shop being easier than dealing with the ordering and trialing of more kits and juices. But here I am again to give it a real hot go for the last time. Thank you to those who supported me before and remember me.

Thanks, Q, You're the one that got me hooked on co-ops as it is, now you're doing it again! To be honest, I'm waiting to see how the DNA40 shakes out since temperature control is the best way to go, at least in my mind, and I've heard whispers of other, more advanced, stuff might be coming out before long as well.

I was a PAD, or more, smoker for over 50 years and they 78mm autos got me off of tobacco. It's also a matter of mind over matter and determination. Every once in a great while I still get the urge but as soon as I smell cigarette smoke the urge disappears. Knock on wood, vaping is the only viable alternative, at least for me.
