They didn't call it ADHD back then.
That was before they discovered they could label it and make big money treating it. When my son was in school they labeled half the school so they could get more ese money. The old saying changed to Reading, Ritlin and Rithmatic and the hickory stick became child abuse.

Both kids that I know that have severe Hyperactive disorder get/got the .... beat out of them over and over. I really don't think beating children is the way to help them learn self control. An occasional spanking when kids are young and the situation really calls for it might not be child abuse but I feel that both the kids were NOT spared the rod but it didn't fix their situation at all.

I know Grandma was frustrated and the kid was a hellion but the belt hanging on the wall for easy use really scared me as a kid. And she did use it on him.

There's another hyperactive kid I know and his mom feels that a Biblical punishment with a rod is what the kid needs. I so dislike it. How do you teach the kid to have self control when apparently you yourself don't have it?

On the other hand, the total lack of discipline, corporal or otherwise, has lead us neatly to where we are with the "I want it now because I am entitled to it" attitude of far too many young folks today.

The weather broke on Tuesday night, a really brief, light, shower that dropped the temps almost 20 degrees in a few minutes. I've been working outside trying to catch up with the weeds and lawn. We've picked two, a whole two(!), tomatoes (each about a small mouthful) and have cucumbers on the vines. The green beans are going to come in with a vengeance in about a week and the watermelons have lots of buds.

I too have noticed the lack of discipline in some kids....it is sad to me. I got my .... smacked as a kid when I deserved it. My parents were by no means abusive, they are absolutely wonderful parents and people. My parents never used wooden spoons, paddles, or such. In todays time if a parent smacks their kid on the ...., and not in an abusive way, someone calls the police or child services. I have talked to parents that have said that they are afraid or very cautious of disciplining their child/children especially in public, and of course the children know this so they act like brats because they can get away with it...at least during the moment anyways :) After a child reaches a certain age, like with my parents they did not have to smack us anymore because we knew better. Now for granted my sisters and I did not develop our manners and good behavior only because we got our butts smacked as kids. My parents taught us manners, respect, and we knew there were things we could not have and patience for many of the things we did get. I have so much respect for my Mom and Dad, and I would not trade them for the world :)

I tutored again today, and last time,

    Really - WHY ? ? ?

NOW - As for the discussion of "Child Punishment", given that there was a Wooden Spoon & Paddle and/ or the Leather shaving strap made into a "Cat Of Nine Tails" always at the ready that was use in our family when I was a child . . . That still didn't work to hinder/stop a few of "My" Siblings from getting into further and eventual bigger trouble . . . I'm think I'm gonna stay out of the conversation concerning the possible benefits - or not, of using such items on a child . . . :-x

Let me just say that I am appalled at that kind of so-called "punishment". That is just plain abuse. I wouldn't treat my pet like that much less my children. I'm sorry that happened to you Uncle.

I actually agree with spanking but only for certain things like lying or stealing. Mixing up punishments was what was done in my house as a kid. Time out, restrictions (same as grounded), kneeling in the corner, writing sentences (my favorite punishment, Shhhh don't tell my mama!!!!). I hate how now a days you can't even tell your child you'll spank them if they act up, because some smart a double s will call child protective services. You know that and lack of money is all that is stopping me from having kids. If I ever do get to become a parent how will I make my child grow up to be a decent human being if I cannot parent him the way I was patented?
I am so fed up with America lately. American's are supposed to be free but I seriously feel like I am in a communist (like) country. You can't do this, you can't do that, you cannot fly this flag, you can't have confederate memorials anymore. If some fool can fly an ISIS flag why can't I have my Virginia Battle Flag?

Ooops, I went off on a rant again

    Good morning, Voltpeeps.

Should be another nice day here in Nevada.

The gal, Crystal, came over yesterday and we played with the horsies. She did good.

We decided to take Wiseguy to the round pen first.

Nevada was throwing a fit. I said, "Let's just open the gate and he will run right over to Wiseguy."

Nevada bolts out of the pen and turns into the back yard! He gallops around the yard and then comes out the gate at full speed. He turns in the right direction but then heads down the driveway, whinnying like a maniac and galloping like a mad man.

By now, I'm laughing my .... off and telling Crystal "What was I thinking."

Nevada gallops back through the area and runs into the pen.

I'm standing by the round pen so I ask Crystal "Should we try again." We are both laughing.

I whistle for Nevada and call his name. He comes out of the pen like a horse on a mission, galloping hard, turns to go down the driveway. We are calling him. He finally notices us, turns back to run up the driveway and runs to the round pen.

Wiseguy sees Nevada who is now strutting near the round pen. Wiseguy, who is inside the round pen, starts bucking and pronking and running with Nevada.

Now Crystal and I are really laughing. They keep that up for a minute or two. Wiseguy is so cute when he bucks.

I tell Crystal, "Maybe next time we will just lead him out on a rope." We both felt we got a lot of entertainment out of that whole scenario.

It was pretty obvious that Nevada was settling in near the round pen to hang out with his buddy, Wiseguy. I told Crystal to walk around the outside of the round pen to gently herd Nevada towards me. Nevada let Crystal come right up to him. I walked over and snapped on the lead. We led him into the round pen and let him hang with his buddy.

Crystal and I hung out talking about what happened and having a good chuckle.

    moanin', Volties.

It's another beautiful day here, three in a row so far. We left the windows open last night and gave the air conditioner a break. When I got up, at 6, it was 58 outside. A little humid but it felt really nice walking Bo. We're supposed to get one more day like this before the heat and humidity return on Sunday. It has been a really nice break in the typical summer weather.

Lizzie, sounds like a lot of fun with the horses running around like little kids.

I notice you have not posted about driving this summer. What's up with that?

I was pretty discouraged by the end of the fall season last year and I am just now starting to enjoy my summer with the horses, in some ways.

My neighbors have been helping with the garden and I have one less cleaning job this year. Hubby has done pretty good with helping around here and there are no big special projects.

By the end of the season last year I was just plain worn out. This year, I feel pretty good and I am starting to enjoy living here again. Crystal showed up at just the right time to help me get back to working with my little ponies:)

    Thanks - I appreciate that . . . :D

AND - THANKFULLY - I did not have to suffer the brunt of this type of punishment as "My" siblings did and the other forms of abuse that were so prevalent at that time (Parents separated by the time I reach 7 yo) . . . AND - To be honest, while there is absolutely no excuse for treating/punishing children like this in anyway, shape, or form - It was also how one of "My" Parents were treated as a child (even worse things) and were taught that was what a parent did to be in control . . . Again - Not an excuse, but a reason why this was acceptable parenting behaviour for them . . .

Now even with that said . . . I do agree that "spanking" (depending on how it is done) a child when and if they are doing something extremely misappropriate or causing harm to others - is quite appropriate to be applied, however it should be done very judiciously and only after every other method - such as positive reinforcement - has been attempted yet failed . . . Just "My" Personal Opinion and :2c:

On a side note: Actually could envision the FUN Ya' had with Wiseguy & Nevada . . . :D
Thanks for the virtual laugh . . .
    BTW: Really like reading everyones stories too . . . BUT - MORE PICTURES ARE NEEDED (including "You" @SandySu) . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Lizzie, your pictures are amazing. I can't believe that dark blue truck could actually climb over the rusty one.

Today, I told Deb that I don't want to lease Maija anymore. I'm not getting much joy out of it, and it's expensive. I guess I'm just not ready yet to get back into horses. This is sort of depressing, because I've always wanted horses. What's wrong with me? Maybe it's just too soon after Penny, but I wonder if there's more to it. I've been busy all this week thinking this over, but it'll need still more thought. Or maybe I should just coast along, not think about it much, and see if I ever get desperate for some horse contact. If I want to ride occasionally, I can always go rent a horse at the local stable and trail ride.

Sandy, there was a piece on Fox this morning about pets and their benefits to us. Turns out riding a horse for an hour give the same amount of exercise as running/jogging for a half hour. Even I'd opt for the horse! Plus, there is the relaxation that they bring. Big pluses to me, but I don't have the room for a horse or the funds it would take.

I think the amount of exertion it expends is dependent on the gait. You don't exert yourself much at a walk, but at a trot or canter, maybe that's so. Once upon a time, I had a list of how many calories various horse activities burned. It included things like mucking out a stall and grooming, as well as riding. People who think a rider just sits there, and the horse does all the work, have never tried to ride.

We are allowed to change, sandysu. Maybe, without Penny, horses are something you have put behind you. More or less.

I was talking with a friend about that today. She said she moved out here and hated it because she gave up certain activities she loved but in trying to go back to some of those things years later, she has no interest.

She will simply have to find out what interests her now in this time of life.
