moanin', Voltalytes.

I used to free climb, using the arrestor cable was slow and tedious by comparison, but when I got to the work location I ALWAYS anchored the climbing belt with a lanyard. I climbed as part of my hobby, at the time, of ham radio and not for a living. If I did climb for a living I'd have the "real deal" safety gear like Tritium uses. The bounce at the end of even a 50 foot fall is way too much for the human body.

It is interesting to note that most of the deaths, according to the video, can be attributed to the climber taking "shortcuts". Free climbing a ladder is one thing, but free climbing around a tower while working with antennas or anything else is a completely different thing with too many variables that can result in a short trip to the ground. It was also interesting to note that in one case all the safety gear was still in the truck, not being worn and used by the climber that died. Too much user error in an effort to work faster...a guaranteed route to disaster when working at heights. One other accident happened because the crane operator was over tired, pushing beyond common sense to meet an expectation that really wasn't there at that moment.

Getting paid ten bucks an hour to lay your life on the line, even if observing all safety rules, seems a little on the low side. There are too many "layers" of companies involved, all trying to maximize their own profits which is cutting the pay to the guy that actually produces the work. Eliminate those layers, of one or two of them, and things will straighten out fairly quickly. I do hope that something changes, for the sake of those that do the real work.

I know, a lot of posts for a few photos but I didn't want to mess up like I sometimes do with pics.

I got the wicker chair and two end tables for 17.50. I bought $12 worth of spray paint. I have one can left for touch ups. I then went online to buy outdoor cushions and the prices were outrageous. I finally found two different sets of 4 at reasonable prices and okay colors. That will dress up the new used table and chairs I got for $17.50 as well [not pictured] and the wicker chair and a couple of folding chairs.

I also ordered some cheapie accessories in tin like a napkin holder and a 12" galvanized tub to hold paper plates and a galvanized tin silverware holder. Should look nice at the BBQ and we can use them for years to come. The big BBQ is a week and a half away.

I definitely need to clean up outdoors but it has been 97 degrees and it will be super hot again today. Yuck!

Crystal and I got the harness onto Wiseguy yesterday. The little guy did pretty good. We led him around a bit with the harness on. Next step is to get him into the cart.

oh yeah, the fans are to help keep the flies out of the house. I bought them for $3 each last year at a yard sale and Hubby installed them Monday.

Impressive, Sandy. That requires a lot of upper body strength that is usually not present in women due to physiology. I guess if you train hard enough and long enough it can be done, though.

I was outside weeding and gave up when I started leaving wet spots in the dirt where the sweat was running off me. It was supposed to be cooler today, but still got up to 95 and the humidity is in the 70-80 range, depending on how much sunlight there is. Now, we're expecting some thunderstorms. I've heard static on the radio, so they are around.

I also finished all the machine work for my mod. The last piece of the enclosure is glued in place, JB Weld, and has to sit overnight to dry. I may actually get to use it on Friday!

Today, I tutored the girl and the younger boy. The older boy is still away visiting his aunt. I think he's supposed to come back next weekend.

And the girl asked me a "Where do babies come from?" question. We were reading about mummies around the world, both natural and man-made, and they mentioned that one young female probably died in childbirth. So we got on the topic of how in the olden days many women died having a baby, and babies died, before they had doctors and modern techniques to save women and babies that had problems.

"A woman can have a baby without a doctor?" she asked.

"Yes, if it's a normal childbirth and there are no complications."

"How does that work?"

"Well, you know when a woman is pregnant, the baby is in her belly, and when it is time for it to be born, it comes out."

"Where does it come out?" she asked.

I would have loved to answer, but at this point, I wasn't sure if the parents would approve. So I told her to ask her mother. She said maybe she could ask her dad, and I said usually, mothers like to talk to daughters about these things, and dads talk to their sons. I said some people don't think children should know these things yet, so I would leave it up to her mother. She accepted that.

I knew these kinds of questions were likely to come up at some point, and I think it's a real shame that, in our society, you can talk about digesting food and how the brain and nervous system work, but the moment reproduction comes up, you have to worry about what the kid knows. We studied photosynthesis, parasites, all sorts of things the kids have had questions about, and this is the first time I've had to refuse one of them information. I feel really bad about it.

Yet today, I felt OK describing how some of the mummies we read about were human sacrifices, about religions that believed in that and how later it evolved into animal sacrifices. We talked about religious people accepting it because they believed the afterlife was going to be better than their life on earth. I told her how when people lived hard lives on earth, looking forward to heavenly rewards was something they hoped for.

Then she asked, if that was so, why didn't people just kill themselves.

I said that I wasn't familiar with all the religions of the world, but I was raised as a Christian, and killing yourself is considered a sin, and you would not go to heaven, where everything would be nice, but to hell, where things were really bad. I said several times that this is not fact -- she shouldn't believe it -- but she should know how religious people think, what ideas they have about the afterlife.

Oh, was I tempted to just tell her about childbirth as I did about breastfeeding, which she was equally amazed by, but which I thought was in the realm of acceptability. I believe if a child asks a question, and you can answer it or find the info, then you should tell that child what the answer is. Of course, you should use simple language the child understands, not get too technical, not go into extreme detail until it's called for, but when you can just answer a question as if it's a normal thing and not make a mystery of it, I think it's better for everyone.

Of course, there are questions she asks that I can't answer, and I explain why even scientists don't know all there is to know about a subject, or that scientists have ways of finding out how old a body is when it died that I don't know and can't describe to her. I always offer to look it up and she can read about it. Sometimes she's interested, and sometimes she accepts that we just don't know.

awsum - I feel your pain on the heat. We are at 97 degrees. At least we have lower humidity.

SandySu - I don't know how they address these kind of issues in China but here in the States, this topic can get ugly:)

Nice biceps, Terry.

Oh and hello voltville!!! I've been pretty busy lately doing outside stuff (not the fun stuff like splitting wood and firepit). And just a couple days ago i started coming down with a chest cold thats been going around. I've been eating spicy food and drinking peppermint tea which helps alot. The worst day I dosed myself with alka seltzer cold and off brand "tylenol" cold meds. Worked like a charm!;) I'm still recovering and today I got my brand new 23" monitor. I tell you after that puny excuse for a monitor I feel like I have my own personal drive-in movie theater (yes I have been to one here in alabama {wonder if it is still there?}). :rickroll::headbang::banana::rickroll::headbang::banana::w00t::w00t::w00t::banana::headbang::rickroll::banana::headbang::rickroll:

We're only supposed to get up to 89 today with 50% humidity. Mostly cloudy to boot. That's gotta feel like a fall day lol. Sure not going to spend it indoors. Hope y'all have a bodacious day.

    Good morning, Voltians.

Wow, you have been a busy bee, Celti.

Yes, and I love my Gorilla wagon. We just brought in a giant load of melons with it. I use it for getting wood during burn season. I roll it right into the house to unload it.

Sounds like your new monitor is wonderful!!!! Congrats:)

It is going to be hot again today. I need to get outside at the absolute earliest I can see and get some stuff done. We are still picking some beans. There is still some corn in the veggie garden. And it is holding on the stalk very nicely. We will grow this variety again! Looks like the Roma tomatoes are starting to ripen.

Hubby picked about a zillion melons. He is giving away some at work today and we will be taking some to the Starbucks this weekend. We get coffee grounds for the compost pile from them.

Since I don't have a lot of time this morning before the heat will be coming on, I think we will get Wiseguy into the round pen and make him do a few circles. It will be good to get him moving. I want to start driving him again. I'd also like to give them both a bath before the weather cools down.

I need to work on the house some.

I don't really feel like doing anything today. Hope the coffee kicks in!

    moanin', Voltvillians.

I was up early and have the laundry almost done already. I've got to run to the bank and Costco later this morning so yard work is on the back burner today. I really want to get that mod built and it is just waiting for the JB weld to fully harden for me to put it together.

A nice monitor changes using a computer, Celt. I use the laptop mostly, but when I'm using the desktop that big flat screen with the high powered video card really shines and makes the craptop look like crap.

Lizzie, our main compost is coffee grounds and banana peels, LOL. Yeah, there's the veggie trimmings as well, but between my coffee consumption and Mrs. Awsum's cappuccino consumption we get a lot of coffee grounds.
