Sitting down, facing forward.
'afternoon, Volties.

I thought yesterday and the night before were supposed to be the coldest but it was six when I got up, colder than yesterdayby one degree. At least there was no wind but everything was sparkling and crunchy when I walked Bo. Even he was in a rush to get his business done and get back inside. I didn't argue the point, at all!

Yeah, Tritium, the US is the land of regulations based on "morality" and what "feels good". No need for legislation for it either, just some edicts from the powers that be, local, state or federal, and it's a done deal. People are children until they're 26 now, at least in terms of health insurance, and want "safe zones" where nothing they don't like is said or done. Funny, the Country relies on them to pick up a rifle and defend us all. Go figure.

Your nearest hydrogen bomb.
I think it's more of how a kid is raised mostly.
Here is a funny pic, made me laugh so hard. I think celtic posted that on facebook.

Although words really can hurt, there is something strange about seeing "trigger alert" in so many internet conversations.

Certainly the case where some students at a law school didn't want some legal terms to be used or discussed because they were trigger words is beyond silly. They are legal terms and you are in law school. [Can't find the article right now but apparently that was a petition or request at one law school.]

Or how about an arts college where nude statues and sculptures were asked to be moved indoors because it might trigger memories of abuse if people saw nude statues. I guess they better not visit a foreign country where nude statues are somewhat common.

if people are too fragile to see normal things and read normal phrases, they might need to consider going to tech school or something like that.

More like consider entering the real world and not some fantasy land rather than a different school.

I loved the journalism professor that wanted to remove a reported that was reporting on the demonstartion, and this at a famous Journalism School! Or how about the students at, was it Harvard or Yale, that signed a petition to repeal the First Amendment, which contains protection for the right to petition?

Insanity reigns supreme.

Don't get me going. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that many immigrants to this country were refugees from religious persecution, who, in their turn, strove to legislate their perception of what they believed was moral, and in their multiple schisms, persecuted others. And the consequences of all that, and the religious diversity of this country, cascades through our history. IMHO.

By censoring you are limiting freedom of speech too.

True. I think we are supposed to censor ourselves to make sure we don't say anything thoughtless that might hurt someone. That's not the same as not saying something important that you truly believe in and that you think people need to hear. Those things must be said, even if they disturb some people. But choosing which it is takes thought, and sometimes we speak too quickly.

Back when the social pressures were immense, I was often accused of speaking too slowly, by the same people who took offense at nearly everything I said.

Talk about censorship! I'm reading Lillian Hellman's book, Scoundrel Time, about the McCarthy era and all the fears about Communism and the Russians in the '50s. What a crazy era! But I think now of the country's fears of terrorists and wonder if the public isn't being worked up into the same frenzy. I think that now they are shooting and bombing, where before, it was a bunch of theorists, but maybe our current paranoia will result in the same kind of thing, where innocent people are accused through some remote association with an organization. We are supposed to learn from history. Is there a lesson here?

Did they take offense at what you said or that you answered too slowly for their liking? Written words, like these, have a way of mitigating that. You can think over your response and answer as slowly as you like. I think the problem comes into play in conversation or instant messaging, when a quicker response is called for, and people don't have time to think of the repercussions of what they say.

Also, there's a geographical and cultural difference in response times when speaking. I remember when, working in fast-paced NYC and getting used to that speed, I used to call a supplier in Tennessee and get frustrated at his slow responses to my questions. It would go something like this:

"Did it get shipped out today?"

"Well ... now ... let's see ... yes ... I see here ... that it ... went ... out ... so you ... should ... get ... it ... tomorrow."

(Me tapping my fingers on my desktop waiting for him to complete a sentence.)

They wanted to take offense, so either would do. This is the reason why I prefer written communication these days.

Well, if they want to take offense at what you say, written communication won't stop that, so it must have been your delivery.

I would guess that if your comments are more respected now, it's either the time lapse or the maturity and knowledge of your audience and you.

Also, with this type of communication, there's the option of just not liking or responding to what you said. That may be a kinder response that a boo and hiss.

Ah crap i just broke one lens of my glasses.

Today it's 59F and sunny! What kind of sorcery is this?

Totally sucks, Trit. Do you have an old pair you can use until you get those fixed? Of course, you may not be legally blind without yours like I am.

Good morning, Voltpeeps.

Puppy pic.
