The idea that vaping has lead to an increase in smoking amongst teens is not supported by the facts.

The CDC's data, which came from the 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), did not support that claim. In fact, nine out of 10 high school students who reported vaping in the previous month were already cigarette smokers, suggesting that the increase in e-cigarette consumption might signal successful harm reduction. Last month the CDC reported additional NYTS data that further undermine Frieden's claim, showing that smoking among teenagers fell as vaping rose. . .

Does the gateway effect Frieden fears—a switch from e-cigarettes to conventional cigarettes among people who otherwise would never smoke—show up after high school? Not according to a recent survey of college students, in which only 3.3 percent said e-cigarettes were the first form of nicotine they'd tried. Of those, only one (2.3 percent) later started smoking conventional cigarettes. "It didn't seem as though it really proved to be a gateway to anything," the lead researcher said.

The FDA actually seems to be using it's power to protect Big Tobacco. This could lead to serious problems for people wishing to quit if it continues with e-cigarettes.

Though these cases were clear on the merits, they are distinguished by their convenience too. Notably, Lorillard had filed a petition protesting the FDA's failure to act on applications within a reasonable period of time. The agency eventually denied the petition, but only after granting approval to the two Newport cigarettes. In doing so it avoided a potential legal challenge that could have ended up in court.

The contrast between the only cigarettes the agency has ever approved and the only ones it has ever ordered off the market–the former from a big tobacco company able to throw its weight around, the latter from a foreign company with very little presence in the United States–suggests that political expedience may have played a role in the FDA's decisions.

Further questions about the scientific basis of the FDA's decision making are raised by Hestia Tobacco, a start-up company whose regulatory struggles I profiled for The Atlantic in March of last year. Merely getting the Hestia brand name approved by the FDA required an entire year of inquiries. Then its substantial equivalence application was submitted in June of 2012. Nearly two years later, hardly any progress has been made on it. Indeed, as of last week the agency still hasn't determined whether Hestia has sufficiently proved that the cigarette to which it compares itself, Natural American Spirits, was commercially marketed in time to qualify as a valid predicate product. Rather than evaluating criteria relevant to health, Hestia is stuck arguing over old magazine advertisements and attempting to track down American Spirits invoices from seven years ago.

The epa and fda are tooooooooo long in tooth in both size AND authority...That is a fact.....to me........How does an independent agency have more control over what our executive, legislative and judicial branches have.Interesting fact none the less.E-cigs have helped untold amounts of people from smoking ever again.

E-cigs deliver fewer particulates Tobacco cigarettes contain a wealth of chemicals, toxins and fine particulates that many researchers believe can damage not only the lungs but also other body systems. When you switch to e-cigarettes from tobacco cigarettes, you’ll no longer breathe in these particulates on a daily basis – that should give you more energy and reduce your risk for cardiovascular issues.

Cigarettes have more than 4,000 chemicals in them, e-cigs only a few. *ABC News reported that one study found a total of nine contaminants in the ecig, but 11,000 in tobacco cigarettes. That’s 11,000 according to their study while only nine in the e-cig. (Most studies only find three in the electronic cigarette.)

E-cigs are not marketed to kids. I understand some flavors make them sound good, but they are still not marketed to kids. Almost all online sites specify 18 years or older to purchase. I have yet to see a single online site that does not specify 18 years old older and require as much proof as possible to make a purchase. Just because they make flavors that sound and taste good does not mean they are targeted to kids. Are adults not supposed to like chocolate, candy, baked goods, and more? With that narrow point of view, then all e-cig flavors would be broccoli.

You can vape zero nicotine in e-cigs, and there are tons out there that do just that. There also are tons more that have started with 24 to 32 mgs of nicotine and slowly cut down to zero mgs. The majority of good manufacturers use medical grade products, in sterile environments, adhering to the strictest procedures, and laws. Check the companies out before you make a purchase if you are worried. If it is that important to you, then ask questions—ask about their products, policies, procedures, standards and quality. If the answers are unsatisfactory, then don’t buy from them.

There also are tons of people out there who have used the e-cig to quit the smokes, and then quit the e-cigs too. Yes, there are those who are vapers for life, and some who have gone back to the smokes, and some who used the e-cig to help him or her cut down on his or her smoking habit. To me, that is all positive information on the electronic cigarette.

Forgotten in all of the negative news is just how much money you can save vaping versus smoking. The average is $100 bucks a month, and that is being very conservative. Yes, you can really get into vaping and spend lots of money on e-cig devices and product, but that is optional. If you just switch to vaping versus smoking, and you normally smoke about a pack to a pack and a half a day, you will save $100 a month or more. In today’s economy, that is huge!
