Ditto on stray cotton thread causing popping... That's pretty much the only thing that consistently causes it for me. (Well, except RDAs but that's a different reason entirely. Lol)
As far as dry hits... How many times have you re-wicked the same coil? For me, random dry-ish hits (not burning but beginning to dry) is the main signal I need to rebuild entirely vs rewick. If that doesn't seem to apply, then yes to what others have said about the wick tails, that's a lot of it, but so also is the wick diameter/thickness, and with that you kinda have to just play around - slightly more, slightly less - we can describe it fifty ways all saying the same thing, but it won't ever quite "light bulb" how to replicate it til you feel it with your hands and see it with your eyes. You will eventually hit the perfect one, and then you'll be basically set - repeating what you've once done is much easier

last thing I can think of is if you get VERY frustrated, try a different wicking material. For me, I spent 2 weeks of vape hell when I began RBA
tanks, til I was given some cotton bacon. Expensive as heck (by cotton standards - $6-7 for a pack) and I haven't the foggiest idea what the difference is, but I swear it works better. It worked for me when nothing else did. Once I had my "light bulb" moment, I now use mostly KGD because its actually less expensive. But still to this day I keep some cotton bacon around because sometimes I have a day nothing seems to work right and pulling that out is what saves me every time. Maybe it's a placebo effect, as I've yet to put my finger on any real differentiation other than the results I get, but hey if you ever reach the point of "I wanna throw this thing out the window" it becomes a game of whatever works, right? lol
