Got a bit of info today from VS on the "Atty lock"... basically they said (paraphrased):

The “Atty lock” is a new feature that has been added to the latest software update from Evolv so after attaching your atomizer to the 510, simply press the + & - buttons for 5 seconds to lock the resistance. Thus even if the resistance of the coil changes during use, the settings will remain the same. They say it will provide you with consistent performance when using Ni200 wire. It has the “atty lock” feature when using temp control mode only, with kanthal you can still lock your wattage (power lock). There have been no updates to the chip when using it in kanthal mode. It will perform the same great way it always has.
These new chips will be added to all new devices that VS produces.

Does using Ni200 wire make resistance fluctuate a lot? I haven't Personally used any yet so I have no idea.

Ni200 resistance constantly changes with temperature. That's how temperature is sensed.

Just will add to dr g's post since you haven't tried nickel wire yet we87........That's why it is important that the device and the coil temperature need to be the same when you initially set up the topper on the device...

The above paraphrased info was as what VS basically said yesterday to me (via e-mail).... I asked Evolv for a bit more info about "atty lock"..... so let me just paraphrase some of it here:

The large screens now have the ability (new feature) to lock the initial resistance or more accurately lock out any changes that refinement may make. They (Evolv) will be adding it eventually to the small screen 25's and 40's. It (atty lock) takes the error correction they(Evolv) built in out of the unit but for most customers it won't matter.

I really wish it was user upgradeable. :(

You are not the only one...

I'd be surprized if they don't add some more gold to the board and say that it is another hardware upgrade and therefore not possible to upgrade the old chips....

The IPV4 and Yihi Chips are user upgradable for what its worth, thats demonstrating much more concern for their customers than telling people they can tear their mods apart and ship them off to possibly maybe be upgraded when/if we feel like it... imho..

Tacky second sentence.... but it's your opinion (they added gold already and they replaced many older boards with them at no charge) so that wasn't an upgrade you had to pay for....the SX350 needed an upgrade to do temp limit.... did they do it without needing the SX350J?...they say the SX350 would do temp limiting but not very well but did they update the SX350? ..my opinion...

I have a wish list too..... maybe in the future.... :) heck I wished for pre-made nickel coils and it happened... still wishing for temperature limits posted on e-liquid and a few other wishes.... :2c:

Yea that would be nice! An optimal temperature when vaping certain liquids.

I may pick up the new SX Mini or IPV4 (I currently have the IPV 3 and Mini 2) but I have been very satisfied with my Vapor Flask 2.1 and Hana Modz V4m. I'd proably go with the SX because it's more premium and seems to be made out of better quality materials.

I am very interested in the new Yihi chip though. I may wait till the summer to pick it up unless it's absolutely flawless on release. I wont be preordering it though.

The yihi J interested me.... contacted them about one to evaluate... no reply yet... I test alot of stuff..... but this is an Evolv Technology Discussion thread so I'll post my thoughts on the J in the proper thread after evaluating it...

All I want is the features advertised when I purchased it to work correctly, limit the temp on my nickle and don't fire it without TC...
What I have now doesn't do that. My only option is to rip my mod apart and ship the chip back? Thats pretty weak and could of been done better -- especially considering this is the cutting edge -- its a failure to send out a product that is not field upgradable unless its working perfectly...

Saying that Yihi should add temp to a board that never included it as a sale point is reaching... This is like saying why doesn't evlov just upgrade all the dna20 and dna30's to tc...

But Yihi did add ohms reading down to the thousandths and increased the wattage of the ipv3 after release. All I had to do was install the new firmware. No need to rip my mod apart or ship it off at my expense and be without the mod for a few weeks.

I hope this was a mistake they learn from -- one "hardware upgrade" i would be very happy to see is add a way for the product to be upgraded in the feild...

What mod do you have that needs the board replaced?

Your thought.... "one "hardware upgrade" i would be very happy to see is add a way for the product to be upgraded in the feild..." is on my wish list also....

... I see where this is going :) but hey -- I'll play...

I bought the chip, not a mod -- I printed my own enclosure for it and put it together myself.

Am I the only one having the issue with it randomly deciding to fire nickle without TC? nope...
Do people with purchased mods have the same issue I do? yup...
What makes me think that its the chip and not my build? I rebuilt it twice and re-soldered all connections to be sure...
and fwiw I also built the printer I used to make the case (Prusa Mendel Max) and assembling the mod was one of the tamest electronics projects i have done in a long time. so lets not blame this on a lack of user skill level ... okay?

The reason for my question was only to see how to answer as best I know how.... Evolv has received many fully built mods and replaced the boards in them. If you have a board that needs to be RMA'd just contact Evolv. (if you haven't already done so). Whether they still take fully assembled mods I haven't checked lately so you can ask them. There is no problem with them replacing a defective board under their warranty (one year). Whether you need to remove the board from your mod is Evolv's call...

Hope this helps....

So is resistance settling, not a good thing now?

It must be at least a debatable item these days. I see the new boards are(or will be) adding a new feature that will give us a choice whether to use refinement or not use it. I like refinement and will continue to use it. I think coils over time and use can have resistance changes for several reasons and I like to monitor for any resistance change. The choice as whether to use or not use refinement will be at the users fingertips.

This is simply not a board issue. It's just not, unless you damaged it during install. Dropping out of TC is always a connectivity issue.

3d printing is actually a much more straightforward endeavor than trying to control temperature inside of an atomizer with a literally unlimited number of potential user-supplied parts and user-built heating coils. It may be more work to do but in all honesty the function is much more stable, variables much more controlled, and there is so much more information on how to do it that you can practically have your hand held ...

So is resistance settling, not a good thing now?

Refinement, or automatic temperature calibration, is, was, and always will be a good thing. But people .....ing about it because they can't accept it isn't a good thing from Evolv's perspective, so they are eliminating their reason to complain, even though it disables meaningful temperature display and introduces a ton of additional potential problems.
