I just might have put the slots on the bottom of ViVi tank instead but I'm just guessing.

There's a few different shots to show you the coils/wick.

This is a good top shot for those interested. The hole for the wick had to be predrilled to fit it, I brought it out to about 7/64 to allow for a proper wick, the other predrilled wick hole is used for filling via syringe or syringe bottle. It should be noted that when drilling the hole for the wick that the top disk can come loose, and pull the wire for the positive loose. When I first got this I read the positive out at .7 ohms, and replaced the wire anyway, but it is something to be aware of.

I plugged the original air hole with part of an old carto condom, you want the hole for the air to be really close to your wick for the most vapor. For the air hole I started with about a 1/16th, similar to a carto, but a little tight for my taste. In the end I stopped at about a 5/64 hole for air flow, and put it right where the wick is, above the top disk (just to avoid confusion).

Side view of the finished atty, for hole placement.

Hope this helps a few people out.

TommyG,

Thanks for all the info on getting these setup with SS wick. I think my side hole is a bit too high and I'm getting an airy and intense throat hit, but I only used a 1/16 drill bit. I'm going to try plugging the hole and making a new one. How are you dealing with hot spots? From your pics, the wick is really far from the negative post. I'm using nichrome so that could be the cause of my hot spots. Did you replace your screws? Both of mine came with silver screws.

dwcraig1,
Since your in IB, has there been any vape meets for SD county? We all gotta get one setup if not.. I'm in Eastlake (sounds better than Chula..).

I accidentally drilled one in the hole right next to the negative post because I thought the other was too far out, resulting in a difficult coil wrap, coils that easily shorted to negative, and a hot leg on the positive side. When I use the far hole for the wick it allows for an even distance between the positive, wick, and negative. I've had very few problems with hot spots with this set up. What gauge nichrome are you using? I make my coils with 32 gauge, which may also help with the hot spots.

For the air hole, the farther from the wick it gets, the stronger the throat hit and weaker the vapor. I put my air hold right next to the wick, and I'd need to recheck my current bit diameter for my air hole, but I believe 1/16th is pretty close to what I use.

All 3 of mine came with the lovely screws in that picture lol, gotta love the consistency smoktech offers.

Here's my attempt at a Scubagen mod for the Vivi tank. Many pictures, so I'll break it into several posts.

Part 1, Power Tools

1) Drill out the wick holes at an angle: I used a 3/32 bit
2) Drill out the air holes at the base: I used a 1/16 bit
3) Cut slots for air in the base if you use a Provari or other mod that has a recessed connection

Part 2: Prep work

1) Make a U shaped wick to fit your holes, I'm not going to detail this step, search for the video by Scubabatdan.
2) Run a flame over your Kanthal (or nichrome) to make it easier to coil and remove any oils etc that taste bad
3) Make your coil (I use the cigarette paper trick; google it) and put your wick into the holes.

My first try with u shaped wick failed because of the coil touching the spacer on negative post just as Boubonman's did. I just pulled out the mesh wick that I used and gave it a going over with ohm meter. On next rebuild I will give it a go also. My research tells me that cotton should be better but I would like to see for myself.
Edit: no silica for sure

Well I failed (again) due to the wick conducting, I'm pretty sure that my mesh is not the right grade, will have to order some.
But I do know where to salvage some short screws of the correct thread for+ and- posts. Toshiba 2.5 inch IDE laptop hard drive, they hold the interface to housing.

Bourbonman,

Great walkthrough. I am switching to your configuration, since using 38 gauge nichome is hotspot prone. My first attempts was trying to avoid doing the cuts on the bottom, but I have no choice with a Provari. Off to harbor freight I go then.

Can anybody out there find Kanthal 32 gauge? Seems like ebay's sellers been a out for a couple of weeks.

Thanks..
